A couple of reports I read where pre-production '06 Explorers were tested mentioned windshield glare being a problem and the hope that this would be addressed before going into full production mode. The thing I most notice on our '06 XLT is a windshield reflection of the chrome strip around the instrument cluster. I'm about to cover that decorative strip with some blackout tape to try to reduce or eliminate the glare.

Cover your desktop top surface with some thing black and non reflecting. It should also be durable and easy to clean!

Just drove my brand new 06 explorer from the dealership. Only got one mile before I had to call the dealer regarding the horrible reflection of the chrome trim onto the windshield. The dealership played dumb as if this was the first and only complaint of this nature. You can buy some type of dashboard rug / cover that is a shell is a custom item for each speficif model that goes over the dashboard. Sells for about $ 40 on the internet. My wife said no way so will stare at this glare for 36 months and then buy Japanese!

I'm not alone on this issue.....Ford made it seem like I am the only one with this problem...BS...Anyhow, I did buy the cover and it works....It looks pretty bad though.......
Polarized sunglasses work as well.....
I am still angry that Ford doesnt think this is a problem

I just bought an 06 Limited and I have the same glare problem with the chrome piece that is on the instrument panel. Spoke to Ford and they said there was nothing they could do since that was how the vehicle was designed! Spoke to the dealer and the local Ford Rep and they said the same thing, how surprising.
I finally took matters into my own hands. My friend owns a body shop and he put some black automotive detail tape (Prostripe) over the chrome piece. It works great and it doesn't look that bad either.
Usually customer services begins when you leave the lot, with Ford thas is where it ends.

I just purchased a 2006 Explorer Limited and can not believe how terrible the chrome strip glare is in the windshield. I wish I had read this message board before buying. The glare is both distracting and dangerous. Ford and the dealer were no help, both stating that they have not had any complaints.

I recommend that you avoid the Explorer (and this chrome trim is on all models)until Ford realizes that this is a real safety issue. Black tape and dash rugs are a poor solution for bad design.

How do we go about filing a formal complaint with Ford. No one seems to care about this very annoying and dangerous glare.

Good question. I sent them a formal letter, but I am sure that will not solve the problem.

I have emailed, called and have written a letter concerning the glare. They just don't care. I am contacting the BBB and letting everyone I know about this so that they won't buy this piece of crap. I am tottally angry at the lack of support.

Just received an email from Ford, saying they "concur" with Ford's assessment that my truck meets specifications"...What crap. If anybody reads this, please keep complaining to Ford about the windshield glare. They don't think its a problem because not enough people have complained about the glare........
Forget Ford....
Buy Japanese

It is sad to see Ford lose $12B but it just shows that the public will not buy these poorly designed cars. Ford needs to stop blaming the Japanese and look at their own designers who can not create a car that people want to drive OR can drive because of the terrible, dangerous glare.

Keep bugging the dealership about this problem...I am continously talking to them. Hopefully someone will get the message that the glare is f'ing rediculus and not normal. I am sick of it...Don't give up....Ford did buy a dashboard cover for my truck.....It sucks and looks horrible...
Its a design flaw that the engineers refuse to admit to...
