Just took my 2000 Explorer to Ford dealership and they are putting both upper and lower ball joints on both sides, with allignment,$750.00. I realize that this is from a dealership, but did I really pay too much? It has 121,000 on it and this is the first time done.

Getting four ball joints replaced on my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500...cost is going to be $560 total for parts and labor.

This mechanic is trusted in my area and from what I can tell this is a very reasonable price.

Hope this helps.

Don't let the "Stealership" replace your Ford Ball joints with other Ford Ball joints, THEY DON?T HAVE GREASE FITTINGS OM THEM ! a DESIGN ERROR this is why the new ones wear out.. YOU CAN"T GREASE THEM! All the mechanics know about this, replace the Ford Ball joints with Ball joints with grease fittings, then you can lube the front end again. From 1997-2005 there is no way to lube the fittimgs on the explorer due to Ford doing away with grease fittings on OEM parts
THe lower Ball joints parts are about 60 and book time on the job is 3.0 hours. 1.5 hours for each side, you knock em out with a ball pin hammer.

Anybody that quotes you any more time doesn't know what they are doing.. SHOP AROUND!

i took my 2003 excursion in for annual state inspection, rich,va. I was told that my ball joint had excessive wear and would not pass. replacement cost for upper and lower would run 970.00 with labor.i have had no indicators of wear nor were tires showing any sign. had two other certified mechanics inspect and both stated that there was minimal wear at best.Due to difficulty, they don't expect you to fix it or take for second opinion. be aware of rip offs.shop around, honest mechanics still exist.

Can you tell me where honest mechanics exist in Richmond? I also live in Richmond and have gone to three places for the inspection this month on my Ford Expedition and all 3 places failed me, but each failure was for different reasons. One was for the ball joints. I would love to know where I can go for a second (fourth) opinion. I have assumed the cost of inspection each year isn't just the $16 since I have never gotten out with less than a $500 bill!

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer with 217,000 miles. I got upper and lower ball joints replaced as well as all control arms for $615.00 at Les Scwab. Seemed pretty reasonable to me especially when the dealer told me 600 for the lower ball joints only. Plus this included rotating tires and an alignment and the guys made a trip to a city 90 miles away to pick up a part at no extra charge.
Les Schwab in Alturas rocks and they don't take advantage of ignorant women!!

i have a 1995 jimmy & was told i needed to replace my lower ball joints, i got 2 quotes, both in the $400 range, is replacing my ball joints a serious matter? how long can i go before they have to be replaced?? please help, i know NOTHING about cars!!
Thanks
I'd get it fixed as soon as you can. Your ball joints have to do with your steering and when it breaks its hard to control your car. My lower ball joint just broke last week cuz I thought i could leave it and it left my car completely undriveable i had to get it towed somewhere to get it fixed. I didn't know what a ball joint was before it broke but it is scary when it breaks on you when your driving so definately get it fixed soon.

I just got quoted $1,076. 51 (parts and labor) to replace upper and lower ball joints, control arm too. This is for my 1998 Ford Explorer. Does this sound right? Need a good recommendation for Boise area.

If you are mechanically inclined at all i would suggest doing it yourself, I got a quote from a small shop for JUST the drivers lower joint and that was 200 bucks, i did all 4 myself for under 300 bucks including the new parts.... on a scale of 1 to 10 id give the job a 5.... Get yourself a chilton book from autozone, they payfor themselves in notime, and Ive made up a How to Video if your thinking about doing it

I just replaced the upper and lower ball joints on my 97 Jimmy. They were held in by rivets that had to be ground out with an angle grinder. They are able to be done without much trouble providing the right tools are available.
