for Blazer/Jimmy/S10. Greasing the ball joints is difficult with the wheels on. I find that the ball joints on my 2004 Blazer have typically not been greased at oil change places (including a dealer!)
new upper and lower ball joints at a reputable garage should run $500-700. In theory, replacing ball joints should not require a wheel alignment (just like new shocks). Thats a quick $50-75 for the repair shop. Having said that, a wheel alignment check shouldnt cost anything.

You actually SHOULD do an alignment after you get a ball joint replaced. You are replacing the ball joints because they are causing problems like uneven balding, why else would you replace them? If you just put them on and forget about it, the alignment is still going to be off. Shocks are different, they are absorbers, not part of your steering.

Just thought I'd mention that the lower ball joint is the more difficult to do. On some vehicles it needs to pressed out/in at a shop. If you do it yourself, you'll have to bring the control arm to a shop to press it in, but you'll save several hours of labor charges.

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport. I was told by my Ford dealer that both of my front ball joints are bad. They also said that they could not replace only the ball joints but they had to replace both upper control arms as well. The price for these repairs,$877 with front end alignment. Is this an outrageous price for this type of repair?

Does anyone have experience or can estimate expected cost to have the ball joints (front only) replaced on an AWD 1998 Ford Explorer by a dealer or independent garage?
the ball joints themselves are approx $1000 then of course depending on where you get it done or if you do it yourself will determine how much labor would be to replace/repair the damage

I just took my 2003 Explorer in for regularly scheduled servicing, and I was told that the both front upper control arms had to be replaced + alignment for $781. The dealership service dept. told me that the parts for the 2 upper control arms alone costs about $450, and the remainder of the $781 is for labor and alignment... I searched the price of the upper control arms online, and I found the price to be around $80 each. Is my dealer gouging me on the price of this part, or am I mistaken?

This may be the season for ball joint replacement ... I was in the dealership for a routine oil change and was told I needed upper ball joints and alignment to the tune of $900. I have 90k miles on my 2003 explorer but I have not had any signs (noises etc) that anything is wrong with my vehicle. I don't know if this right or not. Because I'm a woman, he may have been trying to pull one over on me. I even ask if this could wait until after the holidays to get done. He said "Well, I wouldn't trust it if I were you, you could find yourself over in a ditch". Another technical there told me that they are trying to push their sales. So I don't even know if my vehicle needs these parts or not. What are some of the signs if these joints are bad?

I have a 98 explorer sport. My lower ball joints need to be replaced. The signs I know for my vehicle are knocking noises when turning or going over bumps. I was quoted about $750.00 to replace them and the bank 1 and 2 system plms.

I have a 2001 Ford Expedition. A mechanic said I needed to repair the lower ball joint and uppoer control arms. A wheel alignment would be needed as well. The estimated charge was $1,000. What is a reasonable cost for this repair?

2002 GMC Sonoma with 89K miles........quoted $519 to replace lower ball joints. Quote includes the cost for alignment. Seems in line some of the other quotes. I think the cost estimates can be significantly different based on geographic location.

To the do-it-yourselfers - get an alignment when you complete the replacement or you will prematurely wear your new ball joints and tires out.

I've driven my 15 psngr. Ford Club Wagon van for 13 years now and recently replaced the tires. Was told at that time all ball joints (front) are obliterated. This will be the first time to replace them. It has 122,000 miles on it. Firestone quoted me $700.00 which includes allignment.
