Ours just did the same thing...2100 later and 1 hour after picking it up...the o/d light was back on..our o/d gears were overheated so bad that they welded together! Don't drive too much with it like that... Good Luck

Maybe I can enlighten some of you on the o/d light blinking. I have a 96 Explorer XLT 4WD. The transmission had been rebuilt at a Ford dealership not long before I bought the rig. Soon after I purchased the vehicle, the 4WD light begin to flash, the speedometer quit working, and every now and then the O/D light would flash as well. I knew of the service bulletins regarding the speed sensor. I replaced the speed sensor and the vehicle was fine for about a day. Well, come to find out there are two gears inside the transmission housing that the speed sensor fits into. The gears were stripped, so when I replaced the first speed sensor, the stripped gears were just spinning around the sensor. So I had to replace the gears and all is well. But I would recommend taking it to a Ford dealer to check for trouble codes to ensure that it isn't a tranny problem as well. Hope this helps.

I also have an 02 Ford and the same thing, I fixed or got the tranny rebuilt, and well, 3k miles later.....my O/D Off light is back on and bugging the hell out of me. I see that some might say it's probably the speed sensor or the wires might be faulty......how about just reimburse me for the car.....

My transmission had to be rebuilt and I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. If you google "2002 ford explorer O/D light" - you will see hundreds of people this has happened to - you should report it to NHTSA - I just did. There is something very wrong with this model and year.

I have a 2002 Explorer with 100Kmi. The od light flashed for a day or two a few weeks ago (I ignored it)- then quit and has been off since but... is this speed sensor that I am reading about the same one that causes the abs light to stay on? My abs light has been on "forever". Was told it was "just a speed sensor". Now I'm having a steering vibration/shudder when turning at very slow speeds like parking lots or stop signs that stops when the wheels straighten out and I get any speed at all. Also I have a leak (into the "boot") in a rack and pinion seal but rarely ever have to add ps fluid. The steering is fine except as noted above. Don't want to be ripped off for a trans or rack/pinion job ($1000)and that not be the problem Any help???

I have the same problem with my o/d light flashing but at the same time that started it makes this TERRIBLE noise when it idles. Sounds like a dentist drill. It does it in both drive and reverse idle. The noise stops when you start driving, but i'm worried one time I'm gonna hit the gas and nothings going to happen, thats what it feels like. Any help?

I keep all that checked regularly. Anyway, the od light has quit but the steering issues are still there. I'm just driving the BLANK out of it till it "shows" itself for what it is.
Thanks for your comment, tho.

For normal driving, your OD should be enable, which means OD light on the meterboard shouldn't be lighted up. The car now is using 4 gears while cruising.

When u need extra power or when going steep downhill, than you press the OD on your auto shift knob to dis-engage it. Meaning the OD is off and the OD light on the meterboard should be lighted up with the wording "OD OFF". The car now is using only 3 gears while cruising.

2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 Liter...O/D Off light flashing problem..problem fixed 32.00 bucks. Turned out to be the Vehicle speed sensor on top of rear differential.

Glad to hear that. I have been told the same thing... was your ABS light on? Cause they told me the speed sensor was what was causing my ABS light to be on, also.

As I said, I just keep on trucking in it. No probs in a while with anyway. Thanks for your post.

Well I went through several threades and didnt find an answer to my issue with the flashing O/D light. I got a code reader and nothing was really found but a P0457 code dealing with the EVAP emmisions, would this or could this after a year or so cause the O/D light to start flashing? I figured this code kicked up when they replaced my fuel pump and notice a slight gas smell when I filled up.

Don't know if it's right or not, but have heard over and over that this is probably a sensor on the transmission that only costs about 30 bucks to fix. Mine only did this a short time and quit, so I am just ignoring it unless it shows itself again. A friend of mine who works at Aamco transmission told me not to let anyone charge me a great deal for this... that he has seen this repeatedly on Fords.

Think it all has to do with the speed sensor. Look at post # 65 in this thread.... there are quite a lot of posts on this as it is a common problem. Hope this helps!
