1998 EB 4X4 Expedition, whining noise

My 1998 Expedition (185,000 trouble-free miles)is developing a whining noise that appears to be coming from either the transmission/transfer case or maybe even the differential. The noise increases both in volume and frequency with increased speed. I thought first it was the power steering pump, but I can't isolate the noise there, or anywhere else under the hood. It is too high-frequency to be wheel bearing noise. Any ideas? Thanks.

I finally took my truck to the Ford house for diagnosis. Turns out the whining noise is coming from the differential. The ring and pinion gears are wearing enough to become misaligned enough to cause the noise. I am told it is impossible to know how long it will go before failing. I was told it would cost almost $2,100 to rebuild the differential. I took the truck back home and will decide now which way to go.
