car won't start in cold weather. Just a series of rapid clicks. After it is turned off, a few minutes of flashing interior lights. Not the battery.Problem developed late last winter but corrected itself on warm days. Now returns this winter. Local police department said they had similar problem years ago and corrected it by bringing their only Expedition indoors overnight. They believed it was dust, mud, moisture buildup in starter. Only happens in very cold weather. Live very remote...no dealer in area.

When left out in the cold (-10C or colder) it will start just fine but then all the electrical starts to shut down systematically. Runnig lights dim , heater blower goes half speed then shuts off, AWD switches out, dash lights quit then finally the ignition shuts off. Go to restart and it just clicks . Take out the keys and try 5 minutes later and it restarts and the cycle repeats. If vehicle is left in garage ( which keeps it at about 0.0 C) it runs fine. Ford in Calgary has no clue - hooked up to the computers and there were no fault codes. Things are currently unresolved.

Today the dealer saw the no start condition in the cold 18-degree F weather. Starter relay replaced, and all is well.

I have a 2001 expedition, and when it's colder than -15 outside the ignition just clicks, i bipassed the relay that's right behind the battery and it starts. i replaced that and thought it was working good but now it's doing it again. i don't get it.. it works to bypass this relay with a screw driver?? anybody have an idea. my mechanic told me to put a new starter in it and try that out, but for $450.00 that's an expesive test.

I have a 2000 Expedition and just recently it has started this problem in the cold. It will turn over just fine but I have to give it extra gas when I turn the ignition to get it started and once it's had a chance to warm up it's just fine. Any ideas???

I saw your comment on the post. I have the exact same problem with my 2002 Expedition and am wondering if you found out what the problem is? I also have to apply gas when it is cold to get the truck to start and stay running. When it is warm, there is no problem. Please let me know what you found. Thanks, Gerry

I HAVE A 98 EXPEDITION AND JUST HAD THE ALTENATOR AND BELT REPLACED. TWO DAYS LATER AND IT WONT START UP. IT DOES NOT EVEN TURN OVER. IF YOU GO UNDER THE TRUCK AND JUMP THE STARTER WITH A SCREW DRIVER IT STARTS RIGHT UP. COULD IT BE A RELAY PROBLEM?

I have a 2001 expedition - since it has been cold it will start, but when I fill it up with gas it won"t start for 15 minutes. After getting it started it's fine until I have to fill up again.

Have any of you tried brining your battery in at night during cold weather? If your battery gets too cold, the chemical processes that occur inside which produce the electron flow slow down considerably; which in turn reduces the amp's that are produced to crank your car over. If you have a vehicle that has a hard to get to battery try storing the vehicle indoors or if you have some type of portable heater bring it out and apply some heat to the battery area to warm it up prior to starting the car.

I'm having the same exact problem. i'm thinking either the starter relay or ignition switch. think i'll try the starter relay first.

Remove it and clean it with carbureator cleaner or just replace it...they're about $50.00 aftermarket.
