I have a 2003 Ford Escape FWD V6 3.0 liter. Just last night I was pulling out of my garage to go to work. I turned it on, backed out of the garage put it in park while it was still running, pushed my motorcycle in the garage, and got back in my car. When I went to put the car in drive the shifter would not move. It was stuck in Park. I tried restarting the vehicle and even disconnecting and reconnecting the positive cable on the battery. Nothing worked. I have had the same thing happen to me about one year ago. I had to get it towed to the dealership where they charged me $493 to fix it and all they told me was that they needed to replacing wiring and a few fuses. Does anyone know what the hell is wrong with my car?
Yes its the linkage under the stering wheel 3 bolts and take the plastic piece off and put a new bushing in the linkage it will work great. I know i just had to fix it my self..

First i took the car to the ford dealership, but they wanted $1000 to find out what is wrong with it. I took it to my usual service station that determined the problem in 1/2 day for free.
The car has been recalled 2 times, and i have encountered previous problems. It is the first and last ford i am going to own. Back to foreign cars.
2 weeks ago I worked on a 2004 Subaru with over 140k miles on it with a catylitic convertor issue. After I determined that the problem was a bad convertor I called the dealer ( actually 2 dealers, the one in Mansfield PA was rude and no help, the dealer in Victor NY informed me that the car was covered under an extended warranty for that issue. I sent the owner there, they did about $2500 worth of repairs and charged him only $5.00( yea five bucks) for a rental car and fixed the problem. I'm a GM guy, but how can I slam the imports?
Today I'm working on a 2003 Ford Escape with the same issues, do you think it will turn out the same?

I have a 2003 V6 3.0 Ford Escape-I was travelling up a hill and it lost power and when i had it towed to the mechanic he told me the blown out and that it needs another engine and that it will cost $2000.00 to replace the engine.I think Ford needs to help their customers or we should all do an advertisement on the garbage we all bought.

Ever since we bought the car it shuts off while driving. I believe this was recalled early on, but has kept doing it ever since. A few days ago it shut off going 70 down an interstate. Had to have it towed and now it's in the shop and the mechanic found the timing gears broken with a few teeth broken off!! This is after pouring over 1,000 dollars into getting the alternator replaced and other misc. things.
So, has anyone else had problems with the car just shutting off while driving?
i had the same thing happen with my escape 03. i replaced 2 ignition coils and have not had a problem since.

Re: Gearshift not moving in 03 Excape. There is a little door or cap on the steering column about 6 inches in front of the steering wheel. Pop that off with a screwdriver and then insert the driver in the opening and you can bypass the lock and can then move the shifter. The manual says there is likely a blown fuse or a problem with the brakelights. I replaced a fuse in the panel near the left foot and the gearshift was good to go.
Hope this helps someone. Now I want to know if you can throw a plugged converter away and replace it with a straight pipe.

I have a 2003 escape 3.0 145k miles no issues up until now. Parked it after work on friday, started it on Sunday and it was missing badly. Drove it about one mile and it struggled to make it to 20 mph. Drove it to autozone and had the OBD read. Random misfire, missing on 4, missing on 6. bought a new spark plug coil and tried to determine if both had gone out at once. This is when I noticed valve cover gasket was leaking dripping oil in the spark plug wells. Cleaned the plugs and coils from the oil residue. Thought that would get me going but, not so easy. Still struggled just to move, also noticed a loud squeal just after being cranked. Thats when I determined the front cat was melted from the misfires, the front cat dumped into the rear cat also clogging it. Because of a leaking valve cover gasket all of this destruction.. Spent a whole day and $900. Ouch

Got a 2003 3.0L V6 XLS, 75,000mi on it and have only had one problem one day engine light came on took it the a mechanic they said the Computer read random misfire on cylinder 5, mechanics replaced all the spark plugs and coils, still got the reading, checked the Catalytic Converters, nothing, and just said to come back if the engine light came back on. That was several years ago and it hasn't come back on so IDK what happened but never had another problems with it just like the 5 other Fords my family has. Just change oil, tires, and coolant regularly, and drive like a sane person >_> and I never had a problem with a car that is almost 10 years old...

I can't believe that it is your 2003 Ford Escape. You must have fun it dry of oil or ran her hard! There is no way that is going to crack because Ford wants it to crack before 80 grand mileage.

I have taken off the engine cover on my 2003 escape in the idea of replacing the fuel filter.Well I was informed by a friend of mine that its on the bottom of the motor. They can replace it ,say, when you do your oil change.I have no idea what they look like now being on the "bottom" off the motor..Well that blew my mind, guess I'm still stuck on the older cars when you could replace it -on the top motor.Just thought I could save some labour costs.Anyone have any ideas where the hell it is and what it looks like?Thx

No lie here. I just changed mine a few days ago and I'm not near a mechanic. I looked it up on YouTube. It is located right beside the gas tank in the back. Cost me like $16.

2003 Escape 3.0l V6 4x4 XLS 149,000 miles. 3 weeks ago a very srong gas smell at rear of vehicle when I park it. The smell is nowhere else. Replaced fuel cap.. smell went away for 2 days then came back just as strong. Engine runs great, no loss of power at any time. Gas mileage is also unchanged. Idle is smooth with or without a/c on. As matter of fact, you can barely hear the engine idle with the a/c off and just a little louder when a/c is on. The smell does last for a very long time. Have to leave garage door open for hours or fumes overpower the garage.

Looks like to me Ford needs to do a recall on the motor we are having trouble with 2003 Ford Escape also. It won't stay started when you start it up . My daughter has three small girls and can't afford another car right now. We have owned six's Ford's and this is the worse one we ever own! Don't buy a Ford Escape bad SUV!
