I parked the car and removed the key but the shift indicator is stuck in reverse, not park. The switch will turn on but the shifter will not move. When the hand brake is released, the car roles freely. Does anyone have a recommendation

Add me to the club too. My 2002 Escape did the same thing tonight, except it won't roll. The gear shift won't move at all and the car won't turn over because it's stuck in R. Guess I'm gettin it towed in the morning.

This happened to me last night and this advice worked like a charm. You have to really look way down in there. I am not tall so I had to kneel on the engine block and my arm was elbow deep into the engin compartment to reach the cable. If the loop is not aligned with the metal piece on the transmission, do not try and mvoe the cable. Move the metal piece down to line up with the cable opening. I do reccommend getting it looked at after you reattach it beacuse something is missing that is keeping it on and I am sure it will slide back off over time.

Thanks for this post I was able to fix my car in a jiffy. It's extremely simple to fix first thing you do like they said take something flat and sharp that you can pop the plastic off above your steering wheel it's a little piece of plastic that's about 1" x 0.75 of an inch when you pop the hood look straight back and you'll see your master cylinder look to the right of it you can see where a cable is coming out from the firewall if you follow that cable backwards it will take you down you'll see a little nub sticking out there looks like about a three quarter-inch cylinder and you'll see your ring just dangling down next to it from a cable. Make sure that you have pushed that little piece of plastic down to get your shifter out from being locked in the cable moves pretty easily up and down and you can reattach it to your transmission. Sorry if there was any errors in this post I done it with speech to text because I was in a hurry.

had this happen tome also but a mechanic looked at it and the problem was under the steering wheel. The shift cable had come off under the steering wheel and I need a bushingwhich is a small black piece of plastice about the size of a peanut. The cable is fine. We put it back on and put a pice of rubber hose to hold the cable on until we can get a bushing. I have searched and no one has a bushing. I would have to order the entire cable for $70 and then pay for someone to replace the cqble or put the bushing on myself. Does anyone know where i can find a bushing for Ford Escape 2001?

A big thanks to everyone who posted and made comments. It worked like a charm and we fixed it about 5 mins. Still do not know where to find a replacement cover. If anyone knows please post it! Thanks again to everyone...you saved my butt.

Figured it couldn't be the fix for my situation, but it was. With a flashlight in the middle of the day, saw the linkage hanging next to the t/m actuator. Snapped it on, 15 second fix. Engine dirt the length of my arm, but running again.
Thanks! Good travelling....

This just happened to my car when I put it in reverse to back out of the bank's parking lot....and couldn't shift into Drive. Had to call AAA, but the tow driver knew of this fault and reattached the linkage and I drove home. Need to have a mechanic look at it and put a cap or whatever on the part so it doesn't continue to be a problem. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone!

Happened to mine last night! So glad to hear that it's not my trans as I first thought. Taking the car in tomorrow, but at least now I know what to look for and can't be fooled by another mechanic.

So many recalls and issues with these escapes! My break line broke last year and I lost use of my brakes! Plus other recalls... Drive safe everyone!
