My girlfriend has a 2001 Escape V6 with 170k miles on it that is intermittently misfiring and shuddering. There is no real rhyme of reason to it. Engine code indicates a misfire in cylinder 6. New spark plugs were installed and all contacts have been cleaned and the code cleared. After a few days of working fine, the problem is back. It did it first intermittently again without the engine light coming on. Then it started doing it all the time again and the engine light came back on. ABS and brake light now on as well. I came across this forum while searching for ideas. Noticed a few here have had the same problem but no one mentioned if they found out what the cause was. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

I have the exact same issue with MY girfriend's 2001 Escape, V6 with 50K miles. I had the local Firestone shop diagnose it and it said Cylinder 1 was misfiring. They replaced all sparkplugs, a new coil and a new injector in cylinder 1, and new fuel filter all to the tune of $850 !!. It ran fine for the first test drive, then started doing the same thing, sometimes with the check engine light on, sometimes intermittent, and sometimes always on. They gave up and refunded all my money, luckily. I now have it at the Ford dealership and they have found one wire with the pin broken going to the main processor. They are going to re-pin that wire and try it out. I should know tomorrow morning if that does the trick. If not, it could be the main processor itself (very expensive I hear)

Did that fix your problem? I have an 01 ford escape and am having the same problem. The engine misfires and then rides really rough. It happens randomly. Everytime I bring it in there are no codes. Only once we were able to get a code that indicated a misfire.

Same problem here. Replaced plugs, two coils, boots, all to no avail. I think Mike is lucky to get a refund. No fix yet, but will look into the PCM.

I had this problem, turned out I had to replace the connector on the #6 cylinder.. they call the part a pigtail.. moisture was geting in there and shorting out the charge to the coil.. seems to be working so far.. it this isn't it, it's probalby a short (maybe due to moisture) somewhere between the coil and the ECM

This happened to me too. After replacing the EGR twice I discovered that it was a clogged rear manifold catalytic converter.

The Ford Escape is a cat clogging machine. First it starts off with a cylinder misfiring which causes fuel to accumulate in the manifold cat where it ignites, melting some of the substrate material. Eventually it blows out the EGR because back pressure from the clogged rear cat makes its way back through the EGR tube.

Eventually it will completely melt the cat and send debris downstream to the rear chassis cat clogging it too.

I have replaced my cats twice; and I live in California where cats are twice as expensive.

The Escape is a marvel of engineering. I marvel that it actually runs.

Good luck!

Same problems here. I am replacing one CAT for second time now. I replaced all three CATS last year. I replaced EGR value twice. I replaced my coil packs twice. I cannot believe this car is not a recall.

If all cylinders have been checked and spark plugs it is most likely the processor. Mine is being replaced as i write this. The processor like a computer, runs a diagnostic, thinks there is a problem when there is not. Resetting the processer at the dealer may work but not in my case. Just an FYI for all of you.

I get to a thread that describes the problems I myself have, only to find out, nobody posts the fix or results of anything. Nice! Thanks everyone!

Had the same problem. 2002 Escape. Very wet days would short out hi voltage coils going to 1 or 2 cylinders. Cylinders mis-fired, eventually clogged a catalytic converter. This prevented exhaust from escaping which then blew a hole in the EGR valve. Found someone to replace the Cat converter with flex pipe to avoid paying $600-700 for a new Cat. Not exactly legal, and now have the same problem again with the coils. Do not drive this vehicle with cylinders mis-firing. Could get even more expensive.

I had a new processor (PCM) installed and reprogrammed, everything is good as new. The car runs better than it ever has. I found out that the Ford used the same PCM in the Escape from 2002-2005 so they are all likely to fail for those years.

You have to take off the intake to get at the plugs. If it were me, I would replace all 3 coils plugs and wires while you are it. Not cheap, the coils are about $50 each, but if you only change the plugs, you may not solve the problem. Then you will be back again removing the intake manifold.

I have an '02 escape with the 4 cyl and I had this problem. I took it to autozone and had the code read, and they said to change the spark plugs. I changed all four of them ($23), but the problem persisted. It would be fine at first, then start to misfire after running a while. I changed the plug wires and had no more problems.

2001 Ford escape. Have been experiencing intermittant misfiring for a while.Ended up blowing a hole in the side of the EGR valve. Had that replaced along with all of the spark plugs after finding an error code showing misfiring on 4 & 5.
Also have replaced Cat 3 and cleared out the first two.
Better but still misfiring no codes showing

Help....has anybody else had the same problem
