Ignition switch is locked!! Tried both keys; wiggled and banged steering and shift lever to no avail. Called Ford Dealer and they have no idea. Want to drill and replace ignition switch for $$$$$(of course). Any help appreciated
This is a common Ford problem. I had this problem on my focus.I had a mechanic get me the instructions on drilling it out, and did it myself. I replaced the lock, but left the tumblers out. It works great without the tumblers and the car wont start without the proper key. I don't recommend this, but at about 400 dollars a pop, this is what I chose to do.

My wife's 2001 Ford Escape just did this and it's going to cost a bunch to replace it that I don't want to repeat each time it re-occurs.
Would you mind sharing the instructions on how you did this?
Can you email to william at devine dot net?
thanks!

I am going through the same problem right now with my girl friends Focus.I how ever am am contacting the local news about this issue,as I look into this I find it is something the manufacturing company should have a recall on,but thet seem to think thier not responsible for this.If you would like to help me get thier attention with this matter you can contact me at my e-mail d_w3225@yahoo.com

My daughter's 2004 Escape has a problem with getting the key out of the ignition. She has been back to Ford several times and they can't seem to locate the problem. Is there a solenoid in the column the locks the key in? Can it be defeated?

I am experiencing the key stuck problem on my daughter's 2002 Focus. I would also like to see how I can replace the ignition myself. Is it possible to post the instructions since so many people are requesting it?

I read a posting where the engine shut off during travel due to a bad switch. This scares me that this could happen to my daughter also. I would very much like to resolve this but can't afford a big reapir shop bill.

Thanks!

My problem is also ignition switch related. When I remove the key and get out of my Escape (2003)the buzzer keeps sounding as if the key was left in.I called our ford dealer and that is what I was told. They can look at it for $72.50 per hr.How nice.Could it be something else

My husband's 2003 just did the same thing tonight! It's stuck downtown -- have all of you called Ford to complain? After checking the internet this looks like a HUGE problem! Is there a trick to getting their attention so they will fix it?

Wow..what a problem. My contour keeps running when the key is turned in the off position. I was told it was the ignition switch. Can someone email me instructions on how to fix or replace this part. teri001 @gmail.com

I've loved my Focus for 4 years, but the ignition is starting to make me doubt it. When I went to the dealer and asked if he knew what might be wrong, he immediately told me that it was a $300-$400 repair. No hesitation in his voice. That seems like a lot to me for a car with only 50k on it.

Since my last post I have figured out how to fix this problem for around $80.00.I drilled it out starting with a 1/8"drill and stepped it out to 3/16" drill.Start at the top of the key slot it's best to have the new ignition cylinder so you can set the drill depth.Just drill into it, knock the tumblers out, push the button on the bottom of the ignition, turn the key to run and pull it out.I got my new ignition at Oreilly's for $65.00. Next, I took the new ignition to a locksmith to have the tumblers set to my original key for $15.00 and installed it myself.

I have 4 friends who have Fords and Focus cars.

Ford was really DUMB on this one. The tumblers stick on the locks because the company that made them either one didnt use grease or any lube or the lube fails causes the tumblers to stick.

The repair is so easy that people are spending $$$$ to repair, ford is spending $$$ when the solution is simple WD-40

My friends was stuck and he called a locksmith they wanted to replace the entire lock.

I came over and sprayed some WD-40 and silicone spray. Waited a wile and it worked great never came back.

What I cant figure out is why no one has tryed this super easy fix. When it works 99% of the time.

I've had this problem 2 times with my girlfriends Focus, this time I had to drill the ignition out and replace it for $140.00 for a new switch,Ford dealer wanted $450.00 to do it.I did not put the tumblers back in it because thats what caused the problem and has anti theft system on it. W.D 40 and other lubes did not work.

I've tried to get thier attention but succes any way you can do it yourself with drill and small bit the switch is $140.00, but I agree I think ford should recall these cars

I think Ford should have the decency to replace these at any Ford Service Center. We as consumers should not have to put up with companies that sell defective products or merchandise. In Minnesota, you can write to the Attorney Generals office. If Ford doesn't want to fix them then there are other American made vehicles on the market that operate a heck of alot better like Toyota, Honda and others. We need a consumers revolution against these rich Republican corporations that steal from the middle class and
give it to the Bush Administration buddies. The first George Bush would not have done this to the people he almost gave his life for in World War II.

So Ford Lovers and us Republican, Democratic and Independent voters, "lets put elected officials into office that are for the people and by the people that a new course of liberty may prevail and we don't all perish from this earth," radar and a little help from Abe.

I have the same Problem, Mine is a 2003 Escape, 2.0 I sprayed out the switch with WD40, it worked but still sticks almost everyday, tonight was the Last straw, I go a copy of the key made and took a hammer to it, a slight blow on the key while it is in the ignition switch was enough to free up the switch. you know the saying if it does not fit FIRST GET A BIGGER HAMMER!

What was written below worked just fine for me. Just had to use a lot of WD-40 and about 10 minutes of my time.
