Whoever said to you the escape is a girly car that person is lying. This is a unisex car and it can save you time and money. If you can keep up with your maintenance schedule you would love to own an escape for whatever year it can be... One with low mileage is good but you know I still love mine with 140000 miles on it. Make up your mind, for an escape will be the right choice for you...

Three summers ago our '03 Escape revved up like 4000-5000 rpm. We just happened to meet a guy who used to work for Ford at an auto store. He knew what we were talking about and we replaced the throttle cable but that wasn't the problem. He showed us how to clean the IAC valve (a little carb cleaner and a rag to wipe it out) and the valve became unstuck! We drove fom Maine back to MI w/ no problems. It happed again in Sept., we did the same thing & no prob.! NOW, my ebrake light is coming on off/on. Could that just be my b-fluid level even though it looks like it's in the norm. range?

Ok, here goes: I was reversing my '01 Ford Escape (auto trans), manuevering a trailer, when I stopped completely then turned off the car with it still in reverse gear. When I tried to shift the stick into park, the gear shift wouldn't budge. It's stuck in reverse. I can turn the key, the lights and radio operate, but it won't start (because its not in neutral) and it is firmly stuck in reverse. I will probably have to have it towed in the morning, but does problem sound familiar to anyone and what do you think went wront? Thanks.
Hi i had same issue with my 02 escape back in 07 i hate this car its a money pit!!! it was my linkage easy fix with cotter pin or rigging with a paper clip either way its done me good. peace

The Problem I have with my 2002 escape is this. My car Idles very hard when stoped. Also when I am driving the car will stutter like its going to dy kind of like it does when Idling. This can happen at any speed but happens when I am not excelerating. If I am just going at a constant speed or decelerating it does this. When it shutters like this the engine light flickers as does the head and interior lights. Please Help I have taken it in 3 times and ford cant tell me whats wrong.
Im having very same issue can you help me now? any answers yet

My sunroof broke when I tried opening it. It imploded. I think it may be the side cables that broke because the motor still runs when I press the button but the window does not go up/down or forward/backward. Does anyone know how I could fix or get replacement parts? Does anyone have other ideas what could be wrong? I went to the dealership and they say I need to replace the whole sunroof ($1,000 + labor).. way too expensive.
Thank you

I have a 2002 Escape with the No Boundaries package. To date, one year later, I have had the following problems:
Rear Window wiper motor quit and needed replaced. Windshield washer fluid hose to the rear window burst and was replaced.

i desperately need help i love my escape but in 2 weeks time i replaced my alternator twice and going on 3. changed battery 2 hopefully it ends there. im getting scammed i have no job and cant keep pulling money out of...well u get the picture. i think its something killing my alternators right away. the abs light blinks and if we turn the radio and lights off we can drive for 8 mins. but if on we can only drive a block. then we hafta let it sit for 20 min start it and bring it home. i know something isnt letting the alternators do their job. anybody have this problem and got it fixed please give me a miracle. i dont want to let it go but i need it up and running for more than 8 minutes.

I'm going crazy with the issues of my 2002 Escape. Great shape, except the dying passenger window motor, passenger lock not always working, rear window washer fluid not working and the 16 MPG I get! I do love my vehicle, but my purse is getting much lighter. Any suggestions on the MPG?

My escape idles to high. When I put it drive or reverse it takes off. And when I try to start it a lot of the times it won't start. I have to put one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake just to start it. Someone please help.

It could be your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) or the actual Throttle Valve (Butterfly Valve) is sticking open. I posted this late last year on the sticking butterfly valve:

<quoted text> Had the same problem with our 2002 escape. After a few visits to the dealer, they replaced the throtle cable. Worked ok for a while, but came back the next winter. I finelly dug into it myself, and found that the throtle body was all carboned up on the back side of the butterfly. This was causing it to create a vacuume the you must overcome to oen the butterfly, and by the time you put enough pressure on the pedel to over come the vacuume it flys open to the point the car takes off to fast. The fix was to clean the carbon out with carb cleaner and some fine sandpaper. I have a feeling if a small hole was drilled into the butterfly this would never happen. Mine has been good for three years now.

Yes, a dirty Throttle Body is the culprit for this issue in the 2006 Ford Escape XLS 2.3L I4 as well. Initially I was lubing the Throttle Cable, thinking the squeak would go away, but I then noticed that the squeak was coming from the actual T/B. I too removed the T/B, cleaned it with T/B cleaner and a shop rag (wear gloves!), reinstalled it, and voila! Smooth and steady acceleration. I don't recommend using anything abrasive, such as sandpaper, as you may remove just enough material from the Butterfly valve to cause your car to have idle issues, not to mention you will destroy the smooth-aerodynamic surface of the Throttle Body. If you really have to use something more than a shop rag, for severe coking, carefully use the softest Scotch Brite pad you can find in combination with the T/B cleaner. Be sure to remove the rubber gasket/seal under the T/B before you spray it down to avoid damaging it, and do not spray the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), which is attached opposite of the Butterfly Valve lever on the T/B.

All I needed was a 1/4"-drive ratchet with a 3" extention and a #8mm shallow socket (6 or 12 point) to remove 5 bolts. A flat-head screw driver, and maybe a pair of large pliers or small channel locks to snap-off the Throttle Cable from the Throttle Lever (you may not need this if you have strong sausage fingers). The T/B Cleaner cost me <$5 and I have about half remaining. It took me about 60-70 minutes to do this job, including picture taking :^) The car is very responsive now and MPG has improved by about 2%, not to mention smooth-expected operation. WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA, PLEASE! Read Cleaner Instructions/Warnings.

Some people think this is a severe issue (it can be if the darned thing is never cleaned!), though I don't think there is a real flaw here, BUT, Ford SHOULD INCORPORATE a Throttle Body Cleaning procedure into the Service Manual, for example: Clean Throttle Body every 20,000 Miles.

Hope this helps!

Now my 2002 Escape has a new symptom. When I turn on the heat it smells as though something is burning. It doesn't smell like wires or rubber, it's just a burning smell.
So besides having to have my transmission flushed - Thanks bobr, for the help!- what's my new problem sound like?
had this problem in our 04 focus. It was the blower motor-only smelled when on highest setting, and eventually it stopped blowing on high setting. Drove to dealer while problem was occuring and said its happening. They replaced the blower motor and have had no problems since.

My 2001 Escape 3.0 v6 won't accelerate over about 25mph and its hard to get it going that fast, I just changed all the spark plugs and I didn't have this issue before the plugs were changed. It almost seems like its not shifting out of first gear, any ideas?

It won't shift because you can't reach the speed at which the tranny shifts...it's what I think. Did you swap the plugs yourself? May be that the gaps were not set or verified...you aren't getting enough power from one or more of your cylinders, I think again. Have the plugs checked out...

I checked the gap on all the plugs, Tested all 6 C.O.P. s, and got a p1406 code and p1401 code. Checked all the vacuum lines they were all fine, I then replaced the DPFE sensor there was a small difference but still wouldn't accelerate. I then replaced the EGR Valve but again no real change other than the MIL light isn't on and there are no codes to be read.

I have a 2002 Escape XLT and the rear ends slides all over. It's been terrible this winter. Think it could be the tires or is it just really lightweight?
