I just purchased a 1985 Pace Arrow motor home. It is old but well kept. When I drove it home, about 30 miles on the freeway, it drove o.k. After I got home, I tried it on some hilly terrain. The engine don't have enough power to maintain the speed on the uphill portion of the drive. I have to speed up well above the 65 m.p.h. limit to make it to the top at 40m.p.h. I will try to change the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter ,oil and air filter and even the pcv valve. Is there anything else that I can do to remedy this problem? I have a 1985 Pace Arrow 33ft. with a 454 gas engine.

Sounds like a blown headgasket. Not terribly noticible at first, or as costly to fix, leave it for too long and you'll incurr a huge amount of debt, which, with an RV is not a welcomed thing.

Just bought a 1987 Pace Arrow
Also need to know all about the Onan Generator (6.5 kW) It appears that this Generator is a Propane fueled device.
Anyone else familiar with this Generator model?

Hi
I have an 1985 Fleetwood with a 6.5 hp Onan and it runs on gasoline. I do not know if it also runs on propane.

As with all mechanical problems, always check the cheapest and most obvious things 1st. If you don't have test equipment, you can chase the problem with normal maintenance and replacements. Normally, it's the fuel lines leaking (if pushing gas) or drawing in air (if pulling gas) or a clogged gas filter. All rubber lines and hoses S/B replaced every 5 years due to the environment they are in (heat, infrequent use, vibration). Replace all gas lines and air filters, costs ~$50.
This particular 454 frys spark plug wires due to excessive heat in the engine compartment. Replace and insulate the wires and replace the plugs if they need to be.
The engine mounted fuel pump (push rod) often seizes on this unit. Make sure the rear electric pump (on the frame above the right rear wheel well) is working as you go up hill as the pump is designed to kick in only under load. There is a solenoid mounted on the left rear of the engine that activates the rear pump and it often fails due to the high heat environment. Test it with a troble light to make sure it's coming on under load. Costs $20 to replace.
This should fix your problem(s).

Just bought a 1986 Pace Arrow in good condition. Love it, BUT, we can't figure out how to adjust the side mirrors. Or turn on the heater. Is there a manual for this RV somewhere??? thanks.

Howdy y'all. I wonder if anybody can direct me to a reasonable radiator replacement for my 83 PA SG 454. My rad is in the rad shop and they're telling me it's flowing at 50% and looking for close to $600 to re-core. It is a 4 core, copper/brass, will consider all options. Hard to source an original. Maybe someone has one?

I don't know if you have solved this problem but here are some common things to look at - first check ALL connections at batteries, grounds (especially) and to starter (if you had acid all over due to an explosion then you probably have really bad connections!). If this all looks good (and you should check it with a meter to ensure your getting power to the starter and from positive to ground) then crawl under the RV where the starter is, have someone in the drivers seat WITH THEIR FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE, turn the key to attempt a start, and then give an good hit or two or three to the starter body with a hammer to try to jar the armature a bit. Sometimes the brushes loose contact with the commutator (a flat spot) and this generally will get it going. It is not a fix all, just a test and if it does go then you need to pull the starer and, depending on your skill level either replace the starter brushes and clean up the commutator or buy a rebuilt starter. Hope that helps. Jeff

Helm, Inc has the full set for the M/H (drivetrain, chassis).
The coach assessories are individually supplied by each vendor. I have many of them.
I have owned my PA for 13 years and have a lot of experience/insight on problems unique to this coach. P/M if necessary.

Mirrors....They are adjusted outside. They often freeze up due to rust so you may have to put some (not too much) opressure to adjust them.

Heater...Could be many reasons. Start with confirming the switch, fan, then the shutoff switch to the radiator hose, then check all vacuum hoses to the heater controls. PM if still doesn't work.

Crawl under the back of your your RV, ground yourself by touching the frame, release then measure the gas tank width, length, height. Multiply the three numbers together. This will give you the cubic measurement. If you measured in inches, divide the total cubic inches by 1728. This converts the cubic inches into cubic feet. Then, multiply the cubic feet by 7.48 and this will give you the gallonage. Since this is an outside measurement and questionable if your tank can fill completely, the gallonage will be somewhat less. Mine (1986 PA) is 85 gallons full to the top.
P/M if you need help w/the math.

Fleetwood used to offer schematics of the coach (so you don't hit the wires, hoses, etc by mistake.)B4 they went BK.

Some generic body repair books are available. OR... a good RV repair shop may direct you to their manuals resources.

Go to the metasearcher engine named Dogpile. Key in 83 pace arrow radiator. Lots of resources.

Very simple...Secondary line comes from the fuel tank to the gen filter, to the gen fuel pump, into the gen. Tube in tank is raised to cutoff fuel @ 1/4 full so you won't run out of gas completely using the gen. Drop the tank 6" and replace this hose every 5 years as it tends to crack and draw air, giving you fits to diagnose.

If you still need the Duo-Therm 65900 series furnace manuals, they are available at this website: http://www.bdub.net/oddsnends.html

If you need an owners manual for the Pace Arrow, I have the ones for my 83 27ft Pace Arrow and can email them to you. They didn't change much from 83 to 85.
