Does anyone know what the skidpad figures are for the top handling American road cars?

I wouldn't say American cars are better. Jap qualioty is falling but then again they make them here in America now, and we don't take the same pride in building cars as the japs do. our mentality is different. I think we have finally caught up enough to be worthy competitors, especially cadillacs. the only American cars I think sound good when revved are the muscle cars, vettes ETC. the 6 cylinders sound like crap. I think we have alot to offer now especially GM. they have really stepped their game up with the cadillacs, the pontiac G8 etc. |

I agree. When I was stationed in Saudi Arabia we had a new tahoe, new suburban and an older jeep cherokee, along with an older land cruiser. the tahoe and suburban broke down all the time and had to be towed to motor pool. the A/c went out on both of them shortly after we got them. the land cruiser never broke and had an ice cold air conditioner. |

Germand cars don't last long? are you crazy I have an 87 325e with over 400,000 miles on the origional engine. nothing aside from normal maintanence and I rag the hell out of that car redlining that inline 6 all the time. I also have an 85 745i turbo running 16psi of boost from the stock turbo putting about 399 to the rear wheels and 496 lb/ft torque acxcording to a dyno with 98 octane fuel. it has over 300,000 miles on it. American car owners brag about 100,000 miles. I had a celica I sold back when I was in the air force. bought it with 78,000 miles, sold it at 176,000 miles to a buddy. How many American cars make it past 200,000. we have a customer with an old sl mercedes diesel with 1,004,000 thats on million four thousand miles. we were there when the odometer rolled past 999,000. American cars didn't even have 6 digit odometers. German inline 6 engines are some, if not the longest lasting most durable engines you can get. inline 6 engines have a stronger bottom end than anything else. an inline 6 has 7 main bearings on the crank, comared to only 5 main bearings on a v8. why do you think you never hear of an inline 6 throwing a rod. The old Ford 300 inline 6 was indestructible, as was the old dodge slant 6 |

Charger 440 From what I have read the Aero has more torque than the veyron. So again why does it not accelerate faster? Not the all wheel drive thing as I have pointed out. It seems the engineers had some trouble getting the power down to the road. Why is that? I also heard that the Aero was purposefully built to be the fastest(in a straight line) production car and that the Veyron wasn't so really can you honestly and objectively say the Aero is better? I would like to be able to but I am finding it hard. I am not convinced.
|
|
OK first lets consider this. The Aero started production in 2007, that means it has only been built for about 1 year, the company is a small company probably just starting. from the start they have produced a car that can beat Europe's best, and cost MUCH less than the Veyron, and is at least 80% more practical than the Veyron. The Aero gets about 27 miles to the gallon, so it will not only pass a Veyron at top speed, it will also pass a Veyron at the fuel pump! What good is all the luxuries in a Veyron if you CANNOT drive it across the country/ies without filling up all the time. I bet even an old Dodge conversion van like mine would be as comfortable to drive in across country, and get better gas mileage than the Veyron! With the Veyron's gas mileage it is more practical on the track than on the road, so what is the point of having all that luxury? And since the Aero is a new company, they will probably have their cars more refined as they go along. they said their main purpose was to beat the Veyron, which they did, with only half the cylinders! After they get more money and the company gets bigger, they will probably offer more refined cars. Not to mention, AC IS available on the Aero, as well as the stereo, so if you want to drive it across country, just order the AC and Stereo! IF you want a car for kicking butt, buy the stripper model! The Veyron is take it or leave it one version. And the Bugatti company has been around a very long time, and is a pretty big company! what was Bugatti producing when they frist started? i grant you it was not a world record beater! not to mention as i said they have been in business for all these years and they have to build a W16 quad turbo to compete with a TWIN turbo American V-8? Sad really. And the American engine STILL produces MORE horsepower, and is faster! The engineers had trouble getting the power to the road? are you referring to the Aero? If so, then how hard do you think it would be to get all that 1000+ horsepower, and all the torque to the road with a 2 wheel drive, and a 2750 lb body? I grant yo that if the Aero could get all the torque and hp to the street on take off, you would see a lot faster times! An all wheel drive setup like the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Gives a higher skidpad number. if they put all wheel drive on the Aero, like the Veyron has, i would believe the Aero would beat the Veyron there also, Along with the Viper and the Corvette, as well as others. Funny though you say the Aero was built to be fastest in a straight line, well that was to beat the Veyron, and others to achieve the world record. But with a skidpad spec of 1.05 G's this car STILL corners better than some of Europe's best! So if it was purposely built to go in a straight line, you cannot tell! So we will see how the next generation of the Aeros are, as the company grows, and gets bigger and richer, then there will probably be higher technology, and more luxury options available, as well as standard options. And with more hp than the Veyron. i think they have room for more luxury without having to sacrifice speed, or practicality. |

Frankly, i would rather buy and drive a Lambo than a Veyron any day, of for that matter, a Ferrari, or any other of the supercars.
for one thing they cost a lot less! the get better gas mileage, have the luxuries for driving, and personally i think they all LOOK BETTER than the Veyron! the Veyron looks like a big beetle! i guess that is the VW influence! The Lambo looks like a space ship on wheels! One of my all time favorites is the Lambo Countach. That thing looks like it belongs on a space ship. the Veyron, looks like something you want to step on! LOL!!! So would i want to pay 1 million for a car i cannot drive without buying over priced gas every 50 miles or so, or would I like to have an Aero, or even a Lambo, that get probably double or even triple the gas mileage, and costs 1/4 the price? Yep, i will choose the Aero or the Lambo any day! And as i said, i will just buy the Aero with the optional AC and Stereo, and go cruising across the U.S.A. enjoying the 27 mpg! and laughing at the Veyron drivers setting at the fuel pumps! Knowing i can beat them top speed and with gas mileage! So what if i don't have electric windows, or heated seats! i have AC, so technically, i don't NEED electric windows, and all that other luxury "Excess". I will leave the luxury Excess for the Chrysler 300. |

How many American cars make it past 200,000? Lots! i have a 1985 Dodge with 141,000 and still running strong, on the original engine and trans! And a friend has a 2003 Dodge 3/4 Ton Dodge cummins turbo Diesel with 200,000+, and Still drives it 30,000 per month! all he has done is the brakes and had the AC fixed. His nephew has a 2002 Dodge turbo Diesel with 300,000+. And i have seen and heard of lots of other people with 200,000+ miles on their American cars. One story from Chrysler itself back when the 2.2's were still fairly new, they has a story in their news letter, about a mail man that drove his K-car to 200,000 miles and beyond! when he finally replaced the engine, Chrysler disassembled it and inspected it for wear, which there was hardly any they reported, and then mounted the engines parts on a big board and displayed it in the engine plant where the 2.2's and 2.5's were built! Personally i have taken apart 2.2's and 2.5's with 125,000 on them. and notice that some even had the original build honing crosshatch pattern still in the cylinder! So American cars can and do get high miles on them, you just only hear about the ones that do not! Sure i have seen Japanese cars that have high mileage like 224,000, unfortunately, right after reaching this mileage, they usually fall completely apart, and are so far gone they are not worth rebuilding. American cars can be rebuilt, and will last for may thousand miles again. Toyotas on the 22R engines, are really bad for getting slack in the timing chain over the miles, and will wear out the tensioner and start rubbing against the aluminum timing cover and will eventually wear a hole in the timing cover, and start spraying oil out! Never hear of an American cars engine doing this. But, we can all see that American cars are indeed as good as the European and Japanese cars. Sure the American cars slip sometimes, but so do the European and Japanese cars! Mercedes has been known to let it quality slip and results in problems over the years, the Japanese cars are now slipping, they have apparently gotten so big they are getting lazy, and it is NOT because they are "made in America", my wife's family that lives in Malaysia, has a 2002 Toyota Camry with less than 100,000 Kilos on the odometer and left my wife and mother in law stranded on the side of a busy highway at midnight! And cars like the Jag, are notorious for having bad engines. |

You have to realize, that the people back then do not reflect the current generation. If you say that, then your statement should also apply to Nazi Germany. According to your logic, we shouldn't buy anything from Japan or Germany because we had a war with them back in WW2. |

I may not having the luxury of "Supercars" but Corvettes can not even compete with the big boys of Ferrari or Porsche. I actually laugh when I see a corvette driving down the road, and think how a Ferrari could just blow it away. If I ever win the lottery corvette owners beware, be prepared to be smoked compliments of Ferrari. Junk that corvette!

Screw the “Big Five”(GM, Ford, Chrysler, Political leaders and oil investors)
Support domestic automakers by not buying from them until they take reliability and fuel efficiency seriously. Do not buy from them until they make crop (corn) independent vehicles. The technology is there for domestics to keep up with Japs in reliability and fuel efficiency. Not only that, if domestics wanted, they could make BETTER cars that the Japs, but they prefer not to do it. Why? Because they still sell cars. Domestics use cheap advertising and include national pride in it. While this works it will only hold on for so long. Toyota and Honda know this, and that is why they are winning now. This competition is good for the consumers and the environment. Thanks goodness Toyota and Honda are the automakers that are taking over dirty, pollutant, unreliable, thirsty and corn “eater” cars from GM, Ford and Chrysler. We need change for the economy and our own pocket. GM, Ford and Chrysler have caused too much pollution already. They have also pushed many people to have foreclosures, because the price of those cars is too high, and the repairs were endless. While they could build cars that work in alcohol from ‘the right ethanol’, derived from sugar-cane, they make them eat what people and animals eat- corn. Do not buy from GM, Ford or Chrysler. They pollute too much, have add more problems to the current economical crisis (reflected in foreclosures), and now make cars that ‘eat’ corn. Yes, the cars that have polluted the air and maybe kicked you out of your house, soon may also leave you without food. Way to go domestics!!! Thanks for increasing the price of fuel and food!!! Thanks for keeping a nice and wide smile on political leaders and oil investors!!! Stop supporting the ‘BIG FIVE’(3 + 2). The 3: GM, Ford and Chrysler. The 2: Political leaders and oil invertors. Screw the big five. Learn to love Toyota and Honda. Those manufactures care for the consumers and the environment. They are capable of seen that whole picture, and act according to it. They build cars that make sense for consumer and the environment. |

Well, here we go again! another outdated, uninformed, brainwashed japanese car lover who doesn't know what they are talking about! Last i heard American car DO take reliability and fuel efficiency seriously, The American cars rank as high or HIGHER than the Japanese cars! A Dodge Magnum is ranked higher than a Toyota Camry. And how many American cars have hybrid versions? Ford has a hybrid, so does GM, And Chrysler had a prototype hybrid Intrepid back in the 1990's! Then there are all the American cars that have the "Flexfuel", meaning they can use ordinary gas, or the alcohol mix, Ethanol. The Japanese cars have made big leaps mainly because they have copied from American cars! Just the other day i saw a Honda commercial for their pilot with the variable displacement system, making it sound like it was the latest technological advancement, and they are the only one to have it! MORE HONDA BRAINWASHING!!! Hello!! This technology ORIGINATED in AMERICA! Remember the old GM V8-6-4, from around 20 years ago? It wasn't all that reliable, but the fact is it was THERE FIRST! then Chrysler reinvented it and made it work reliably, all the new Hemi's in the Magnum, Charger, 300, have had it for years, even the Dodge trucks! I went on a business trip and we rented a 2008 Chevy Tahoe, guess what it had that MDS,(Multiple displacement system)! Oh and the Japanese cars are NOT winning, they are sliding down! American car are doing great, and the Japanese cars are losing ground! |

"We need change for the economy and our own pocket. GM, Ford and Chrysler have caused too much pollution already. They have also pushed many people to have foreclosures, because the price of those cars is too high, and the repairs were endless."
"Yes, the cars that have polluted the air and maybe kicked you out of your house, soon may also leave you without food. Way to go domestics!!! Thanks for increasing the price of fuel and food!!!" This has got to be the STUPIDIST remark i have EVER heard! Even a 5th grader knows the the price of oil, and food, and the foreclosures have NOTHING to do with the American auto industry! If anything the foreclosures are because of all these brainwashed know it alls, that buy FOREIGN CARS! putting American workers out of a job! And as far as the price of oil and food is concerned, the prices are regulated by the oil cartels, and the government, NOT the Automakers! Not to mention, the price of food and other consumer goods are going up in price, BECAUSE of the higher gas and fuel prices! It cost more for the fuel for the truck that deliver the goods, so as a result, the prices of what they carry is going up to cover the higher fuel prices. So to blame the American auto industry for Gas prices and food prices ect. it pretty stupid! If you have ever been to other part of the world, you will see gas prices as high or even higher than here in the U.S.! how do you explain that? American cars are causing higher gas prices in countries where they are not even sold, or sold very little? HMMM. How about countries where Japanese cars are more dominant that ANY other car maker, are the gas prices higher there? YES! I really wish these people would learn what they are talking about! |

I'm a GM, guy and I usually post on the Pontiac forum as (I drive a G5), but since I came across this, I feel as if I just have to leave a comment. First off, to the one saying that Japanese automakers only have fuel efficent vehicles, you know very little about the industry, Chevy has the MOST FUEL EFFICENT COMPACT and MIDSIZE cars, from the Malibu, Cobalt, Aveo etc, read up they are more fuel efficent than any Hyundai, Honda, Toyota etc in its class:
www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f19/breaking-chev... - 135k - As far as Jap cars, Toyota and Honda are the only companies form Japan that build hybrids,(Civic, Prius and Camry), Mitsubishi, Nissan and Subaru don't build hybrids, and Mazda only has a hybrid because Ford gave them that technology, through the Escape hybrid,(although I would not buy one though) Also if you buy a Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge they say you only pay $2.99 for gas in the next 3 years..and also, NO EUROPEAN car companies even have a hybrid at all. Also, you can get a pretty fast car like a Cobalt SS/SC and still get around 30-31mpg on the highway. And Buick is on par with Lexus for problems per 1000 vehicles. |
