I just bought a sprinter 3500 2007 with a flat bed on it. Drove it at 80 mph for about 350 miles and got a terrible 11.2 mpg. I do not know how everyone else is saying that they get no less than 20 at these speeds is something wrong with this spinter

SPRINTER MPG -- I have a 2003 Sprinter RV by Gulfstream. I have 100k miles on it and have been disappointed in my power and mileage with my 2.7 litre 2500 model Sprinter. I installed a Diesel Power Tuning Module from Upscale Automotive. I got the more expensive 2 stage model ($799). On a recent highway trip KC to Minneapolis driving fast (76-78mph) I averaged 21mpg. Very good pep in town also- no more severe turbo lag. I am very happy with the tuning module. If you know what you are doing you can install it yourself as it comes with full instructions. I paid my local mechanic $200 to install it. It has settings of 1-9 and then A thru E. I started with the B setting and was not satisfied with the power. I now am at the C setting on the tuning module and happy with power and MPG. Prior to installing the module I was getting about 18.5-19.0 highway at 75mph. If I drove like a normal RV driver-- 68mph -- I bet I would get 23mpg or better. go to sprinterstore.com

I'm looking for a used Sprinter. I'm in PA. Sounds like I have to do a learning curve to achieve optimal fuel economy.
I have driven an 05 Chevy 2500 since 06'.
I'm a big fan of synthetics to, which helps on all my travels. I bought my van with 30k miles and now have 185k miles. Now that the Sprinters are out since 02', I hope to find a good deal. Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks, Railman

Man if you have been selling the sprinters since 2003
then you know they won't break in untill at least 20 thousand K's about twelve thousand miles, oil at least a pint per thousand untill the break in period comes into effect, then no loss of oil between services, fuel at your end has been a major problem with quality and contamination, of which you would be aware of from the emails sent from D/C bio-fuels caused too many problems to the ecg valve system the last posting from d/c to the dealer ships was to advise customers not to exceed B5 where the manual said B10 based on a 1998 fuel watch convention between major vehicle manufactures, problem was it was not mandated,or ratified via the Eurpoean commission, even the new 2006 Sprinter has had the head revised again third time round, because of the fuel problems in some areas, would you put BP fuel into your van? I doubt it, the only fix, to resolve it was, use the later mobil one oils for the 2006 models which suspend the particles in the oil and a high quality synthetic upper cylinder lubricant, to clean the fuel to prevent the carbon build up on the valves , which gives an even overall spray of fuel in the correct pattern to prevent the burning of the valve faces in front and behind the seating's of the valves, a clean piston crown , prevents the bore wall from being burnt and scored from the waste particles falling into the system , it also reduced the contaminated heat bulid up from burning particles from blowing out the turbo seal at the exhaust end, clean fuels is all the dodge needed, why could DCX not address, and pass this information back to it's valued customers?
The end result of changing oil filters lower micron rated 15 micron, and the addition of the latter synthetic mobil oils along with upper cylinder lubricants, resulted in a dream run for the Sprinters, the bonus was the emissions matched up to the latest mercedes/Dodge Sprinters 2006 for euro 4 specs including bin 8 for 2008 0.02 between eight hundred to 1800 RPM at idle it still ran at 0.20 but with the modifaction of the 2007 dry cell particle elimator U.S version it was resuced back again to 0.05 to 0.08 depending on temp/cold and hot starts, that's not bad for a test via the DOT and the CSRIO in Australia for a 2005 313CDI mid based van with 25 thousand k's on it and one oil change tests indicate it still has the required lubristy to manufactures spec, no fuel filter changes either , its as if it was factory brand new, we did pull it out last week out of curiosity
I apologize but I have no clue what either are you are talking about. I was just researching reviews of the Sprinter. Would you recommend this van? I'm looking at a 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 158".

Thank you.

So what do chevy vans get in mpg?? I had a sprinter van 2004, got about 25 mpg. But some one just totaled it. It had so many issues while under warrenty. Th e black box that preheats the oil and radiator fluid went bad. I think the problem was there from when it was new , then went out of warrenty. The part alone was a wopping 2500 or so. Some of the other things thatbwent bad like waste gate an turbo were under warrenty at the time . Great work truck but high maintenance. So the fuel savings may never be seen. Does any one know what the chevy or gmc 4.8 litre engine get?? Thanks

I have a 3500 ext. sprinter which I purchased new in 2009. I love the van but never checked the mileage . No clue if its good or bad. . I drove the van across canada couple of times pulling a 20 ft trailer loaded and a couple of times without trailer. What I found while pulling a loaded trailer or by itself the turbo doesnt kick in when you need it and it kicks in after 15 0r 20 seconds. Does anyone have the diesel tuning module to compensate for that xtra power. please advice I am thinking of purchasing one. thanks

Hi Adrian - When dealing with power loss in a Sprinter, there are a number of possible problems. I have a post on my Sprinter RV Web site describing how to troubleshoot this:

Hi Buckwheat -

Sprinter vans require full synthetic oils which meet the required MB 229.51 oil specifications. If you have a:

- T1N Sprinter (2001-2006) with the inline 5 cylinder 2.7 liter turbodiesel engine (OM-612 and OM-647) an excellent oil is: Mobil 1 0W-40 European Car Formula
This oil meets or exceeds the MB BEVO 229.5 spec.

- NCV3 Sprinter (2007-present) with the 3.0-liter V6 (OM-642) or 2.1-liter (OM-651) turbodiesel engine an excellent oil is: Mobil 1 5W-40 ESP Formula M (Emissions Systems Protection). This is a low ash oil specially formulated for use in diesel engines that use the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).
This oil Meets or exceeds the MB BEVO 229.51 spec.

A full list of other oils which meet the required 229.51 spec for the Sprinter is available here:
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229....

From 2010 onwards, Sprinters also have the exhaust after treatment and need to have the
DEF tank filled about every 10K miles.
