Currently running tests on 2005Mercedes Sprinters manual with 313 CDI engines In Australia, mid based vans loaded to 1.5 tons Using Ultra low suplhur fuels with upper cylinder lubricants to offset lack of upper lubriancts in the new fuels.
All filters, and cabin filters changed, using the Mobil Devalc MX extra heavy duty oils.
emissions down to 010g/ppm
Top end speed restricted to 65 MPH voluntary running on 2000 to 3000 RPM
All vibrations eliminated no diesel smells inside cabin or outside, so quite you can hear the clock tick
first week of testing, returns 31.9 miles to the gallon , with a little extra tunning we will get to the 34 mile to the gallon mark.

The best we have gotten on our 04 sprinter conversion is 23mpg. We only have 15000 miles on it so far, so we hope things will improve, this is with highway driving to Canada and back to Iowa. What should we do to improve things??

What axel do you have? If your van was built with the 4:11's you probably will not get any better. I have been selling sprinters since 2003. I am currently driving one and the first tank was about 25 mpg. 99% of my customers have never gotten less then 20 mpg and a bunch say they get up to 30 mpg.

I have an '04 mid wheelbase high top. If I run 55 mph for 150-200mi runs with summer tires and no ladders on the top rack, I get 27 mpg. LOcal runs of 10-25 mi. and conservative driving 22-23 mpg. One ladder on the top and studded snows drop the mileage 3 mpg. Loads dont seem to have much of an affect but speed, wind resistance(ladders) and tire choice does.

Replying to an old post, but who knows?
Man if you have been selling the sprinters since 2003
then you know they won't break in untill at least 20 thousand K's about twelve thousand miles, oil at least a pint per thousand untill the break in period comes into effect, then no loss of oil between services, fuel at your end has been a major problem with quality and contamination, of which you would be aware of from the emails sent from D/C bio-fuels caused too many problems to the ecg valve system the last posting from d/c to the dealer ships was to advise customers not to exceed B5 where the manual said B10 based on a 1998 fuel watch convention between major vehicle manufactures, problem was it was not mandated,or ratified via the Eurpoean commission, even the new 2006 Sprinter has had the head revised again third time round, because of the fuel problems in some areas, would you put BP fuel into your van? I doubt it, the only fix, to resolve it was, use the later mobil one oils for the 2006 models which suspend the particles in the oil and a high quality synthetic upper cylinder lubricant, to clean the fuel to prevent the carbon build up on the valves , which gives an even overall spray of fuel in the correct pattern to prevent the burning of the valve faces in front and behind the seating's of the valves, a clean piston crown , prevents the bore wall from being burnt and scored from the waste particles falling into the system , it also reduced the contaminated heat bulid up from burning particles from blowing out the turbo seal at the exhaust end, clean fuels is all the dodge needed, why could DCX not address, and pass this information back to it's valued customers?
The end result of changing oil filters lower micron rated 15 micron, and the addition of the latter synthetic mobil oils along with upper cylinder lubricants, resulted in a dream run for the Sprinters, the bonus was the emissions matched up to the latest mercedes/Dodge Sprinters 2006 for euro 4 specs including bin 8 for 2008 0.02 between eight hundred to 1800 RPM at idle it still ran at 0.20 but with the modifaction of the 2007 dry cell particle elimator U.S version it was resuced back again to 0.05 to 0.08 depending on temp/cold and hot starts, that's not bad for a test via the DOT and the CSRIO in Australia for a 2005 313CDI mid based van with 25 thousand k's on it and one oil change tests indicate it still has the required lubristy to manufactures spec, no fuel filter changes either , its as if it was factory brand new, we did pull it out last week out of curiosity

Does anyone know where the oil filter is located. I can't seem to recognize it. I've alreday done my own fuel filter but since the dealers want to charge a whoopin' $150 for an oil change, I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Quick question, I'm looking to change my fuel filter, in my 2004 Dodge Sprinter (vs. having my dealer do it & pay thru the nose). Has anyone out there done this, on thier Sprinter? Where is it located? Was it an easy change?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm thinking of getting 2500, the longest and tallest and also getting a trailer hitch. I know the pulling capacity is 5000 lbs but I doubt I'll ever pull that much, just pull the double axel that U-haul rent. Anyone ever tried it and can comment on pulling?
