rear door handle has a cable that goes into the the bottom of the plastic molded latch assembly secured in door panel. How do I re attach or secure the cable inside that assembly?

Did you try unbolting the latch itself, and getting to it that way? I was able to twist the whole assembly about a bit that way (had to replace it at one point, too).
