Rear Differential "spider gears" replacement

I shattered one of the "spider gears" in my rear end, got a replacement set from the local parts store, and can't get the two smaller gears (the ones NOT clipped to the axles) to line up with the holes. I told them the gear ratio, and said they had the right ones. I get one lined up and the shaft slid half through, but the other small gear is about 1/4 - 1/2 a hole off from the shaft going through. I've tried to jimmy them around, but i can't get it. Is there a trick I'm not doing? Anyone have suggestions that might/will help me?

I forgot to say this is in a 1994 Ram 1500 4x4. don't think it matters but it has the 5.9L engine
