Was hoping someone could tell me their opinion on why my 2000 neon is making a whining sound...im almost positive it is either my transmission or possibly pulley system...it has been doing this for approx 2 yrs started off faint and got louder...my tranny fluid is fine...guess's anyone, please???

If it only whines when you're driving, it's a bearing somewhere. If it whines all the time that the car is running, whether it's moving or not, it's probably a bearing on one of the accessories.(pulleys) If it IS a constant whine, then you're in for a headache... The best way to find out what's making the noise is to take off the drive belt for the power steering and the air conditioning pump. If the wiring is still there, replace your alternator because it's going to seize soon. If it isn't there with just the alternator belt being driven, then it's obviously either the power steering or the a/c compressor. To check if it's the power steering, turn the wheel with the belt on and the car running. If the noise gets louder, it's probably the p/s pump. If not, it's probably the a/c compressor. In that case (since you can only LEGALY have a repair shop with the proper purging and recharging equipment do it) you are better off getting the shorter belt for a car with no a/c and just driving without until you can afford to have the a/c compressor replaced.

If the noise is only there when driving, your best bet is to start checking the wheel bearings first, then the u-joints in the c/v shafts. (if you don't know what c/v shafts are, you probably shouldn't be trying to run down the noise yourself) The last thing to suspect would be the transmission itself, as it shouldn't be worn enough to have damage unless you've got well over 200K miles on it or drive VERY aggressive.

I'm having the same problems with my 2000 dodge neon. It's intermittent whining that occurs at weird times. It's occurred while crusing at 25 mph and while stopped. Like Melinda, mine has gotten worse at time has passed, but it's only been happening for a month or so.

I'm also having this grinding noise when I first start the car. I changed the starter, so I know that's not it. Used to happen only occasionally, now happens when I haven't driven it in 12 or so hours. I think I'm going to take it to a dealer to get a diagnostic, tune-up, and general look over on the car.

It sounds like you have a mechanical issue there. Something has been warped and is catching against other parts. A repair shop will probably be the best place to take it. I'd suggest starting by taking off the inspection plate for the flywheel/torque converter and check for shiny metal. If there is obvious damage, then a mechanic will know where to go from there. If there isn't damage at that point, then the only thing to do is go through the rest of the car, looking at the undercarriage and the moving parts of the drive train to see what's either dragging on the ground or broke loose and rubbing.

My 2002 dodge neon has 93000 miles on it, Tuesday it was driving perfect, then yesterday I hit the gas and it made a whining noise, then I tried to drive and it wouldn't go, just stalled then a couple seconds later pulled forward on its own. It's an automatic. What could be wrong??? Please help!
