Hope someone can help...my 2002 dodge neon worked fine this morning- ran some errands with about 3 stops when I turned the car off. The car then started up fine. I drove home and turned car off for about 20 minutes and when I tried to re-start, nothing. I have checked the fluid levels- look ok, checked battery- fully charged, let car cool down for awhile incase it needed a break even though no sign of overheating- didn't help. When I try to start the car, there is a faint clicking and the display panels go crazy - jumping up and down- and then settle. OBD does not show any code except for the battery code 1684(I hooked up a charger to check to see if battery was charged. Looked online and it seems it could be a fuse (?) or the starter...how would someone know which- and if it is the starter, can you use a used one?

I would check you battery cables. If they are a little lose or corded they will not let the car start. It would be like your car is not grounded. That would explain why all the displays are going crazy. If you have to open the hood and watch the battery post, while some one starts it I bet that’s where you would see a small spark and hear some clicking. Let me know if that was your problem.

My 2000 dodge neon will not start in the morning no matter the outside temp. If i go out and try to start it nothing will happen, but the gauges and radio work. Also i have a trick that if i try to start and it does not start i unlock the doors with the remote senser and walk away for a few mintes and then my car works.

I agree that its most likely the battery cables. If they are coroded looking, take them off and use a wire brush on the cables and battery posts. Then put them back on and make sure they are tight and the bolt that holds them on is not worn or stripped.

I'm facing quite a different problem. My 2002 Dodge Neon's transmission leaks every morning when started and the mecahnics are having a hard time locating the spot of this leakage. Let me know if you have some ideas about my problem. E-mail me at dn5f9@umr.edu.

i have a 1998 dodge neon and i had the not starting problem for no apparent reason, what i found was that there was a broken wire between the ignition and the relay, so i bypassed them and put a push button start in. work like a charm

My car did something similar not to long ago. I went out for the night and when I went to go home
my neon would not start. Faint clicking on trying
to start car. I did jump it to try and get it home
and it worked for a bit but my dash display was
acting erractically on and off. Pulled over and
had it towed. Was told at dealer that a bad battery
will cause dashboard display to act like this.
Hope this helps you or others.

This has been happening to me lately. When I checked my battery cable connections I saw that the underside of them had rusted some. I used a combination of 1.5 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of water to clean the cable points and the metal battery columns. However it has been continuing to happen. I notice when it does happen all I have to do is open the hood and tighten the positive battery cable and it will then work. I think I just need new battery cables or the bolts have to be very tight on the metal battery columns. However my cables are usually on tight but it happens periodically nonetheless.

fi your cable are corroding like that i suggest take your finger and get grease and put around the cable that will protect it from battery acid this is the same stuff they will cell you at auto zone for a buck but most of us have the grease around the house

This happened to me too only my 96. One day it would start, I would get a jump and this went on for about a week until boom it just did not start for anything! I went and got a new battery and still no engine turnover. Lights came on, horn honked. I started to dink around after reading the manual for the wiring diagrams and sure enough under the steering column kind of above the clutch area there were some frayed wires which were no longer connected due to them getting loose, car being little and big feet kicking them around. I hooked them back together just to see and voila....the car started right up. If this isn't it then I can't help you.

I agree with those that say this is a wiring problem. It was for me on my 96 as above. To find out if it is the battery switch batteries and if it is continuing to happen it is definatley a wiring problem. Could be relay or just a loose wiring. Wiring on Neons is atrocious. I think they used the most cheap materials to build. I love my Neon. I will fix it until it dies on me and then I will cry.

Travis, this is the same thing happening with an 04 that a guy was trying to sell me last week. If you find anything out with it reply back or email at prosup1@aol.com. I'd sure be interested in what you've found. Thanks,
John
