I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND LOTS OF HEADACHES, AFTER REPLACING WHAT THEY SAID WAS A BAD BCM THEY FOUND OUT IT WAS A WIRING HARNESS IN THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR, THAT WAS SETTING OFF MY ALRAM SYSTEM. AFTER YOUR CAR SITS A BIT THE ALRAM RESETS ITSELF AND SO THE ENGINE WILL START, UNTIL NEXT TIME.

<quoted text>The photo optic sensor in the distributor controls spark and fuel.It will cause the problems as described and not show up on engine check because resting the engine seems to allow it to function properly again. This seems to happen in the 3.0L motor.

I am getting ready to change the body control module in a 99 caravan cause it too is having a intermittent starting problem. Don't like hearing others say it didn't fix the problem. These vans seem to be complete junk.

I have similar problems as others I have read about. Mostly electrical problems. The gauge cluster is not working. The fan blower fuse & turn signal (apparently on the same circuit) continues to blow and I have replaced it many times. The lights and door locks intermittently turn on/off & lock/unlock when turning. It seems that there is a loose connection or bad ground. I took it the the dealer and they said that it could be the battery being low (which I thought was total BS). They also mentioned the clockspring in the steering wheel hub but I haven't replaced it because I thought they were just after my money. I hope someone out there figures this problem out so I can fix the work van. Please reply if you have found a solution. Thank you.

I have fixed my problem. Three areas to look. Battery cables corrosion and also I had to cut my end off and replace it after I corrected the other problems. I found out the battery clamps tighten up with a wrench but that doesn't mean they are tight. Always perform the twist test after tightening. Also under the battery plate is a post that at least three ground wires are attached together. These may need checked. The dash cluster will needs to be taken off and unplugged. The boards will need taken apart and the pins behind the plug will need reordered. They used a so called safer solder back then and the company that builds dash models builds them for other models to. If you resolder the pins and put back together it should be ok. I would recommend this before changing modules. I changed mine out first and it didn't work. I had more issues. Then when I took it out and resoldered it and it worked as far as the gauges. It started also. Then one day it didn't start and I traced it down to the positive clamp that is molded on the wire. I peeled back a little bit of insulation and found it full of corrosion under the wiring. It has been problem free for about 5 -6 months. I can take the dash cluster out in about 10 15 minutes. When I was done I plugged it in and started it up before I put everything back. Believe me you can ask around and get someone to solder it for you. I have an extra panel cluster from a 98 that I can resolder the terminals and send it to someone if needed. I have 45 in the cluster.

This has been solved earlier in these posts. If you look back a few months you should find it. They even tell you how to recalibrate the gauges and to calibrate the ac gauges that keep flashing. I have a silverado truck the speedometer quit on and I found tht the stepper motors have plastic gears and they went back to brass. Just google in your problem and try the main search bar and see if that helps.

I have the same problem with my 1998 T&C. Sometimes it dies immediately, sometimes it won't start at all. Happens about every 5 weeks, then goes away. When it happens, the dashboard indicators are all without power. Did you get your problem fixed? My mechanic has replaced the starter the starter relay, ignitions switch, and wired around all the dafeties (eg neutral switch). It is NOT the starter or starter circuit - more related to engine controls being without power.

I HAVE A DODGE GRAND CARAVAN, AND WHILE I AM DRIVING, THE ENGINE JUST STOPS WORKING AND MY STEERING WHEEL GETS VERY HARD TO MANEUVER. I TOOK IT THE THE CAR DEALER AND THEY CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS.

i am having the same exact problem , when it happens to me the gauge cluster goes dead also i have changed the ignition switch and the body control module. its running for now. my next option is to check the ground wires in the dash because if i tapped the dash the problems would go away for a few days. any other suggestions for things to check would be great.
I have had the same problem and I pulled the instrument cluster and tried to start the vehicle and it will run without the cluster in the van. I read somewhere that there is a bad connection on the dash circuit board. I've looked and haven't found any thing that looks like it might be a bad connection.

Once before I had the problem of the ABS light coming on and staying on and all of the gauges on the dash dieing on my 1998 Grand Caravan (250,000 km). This appeared to have been fixed by replacing the clock spring. This problem just re-occured this morning.
The van starts and runs fine but the ABS light comes on and all dash gauges are dead.
I have no problem driving the vehical although I have no idea how fast or far I'm going or how much gas I have.
I guess I'll be getting another clock spring.
I have the same problem. What is the clock spring and were is it Thanks any help would be appreciated

I have intermittent problem only in Winter with my 1998 Dodge Caravan 3.8L, 172000 KM, that I cannot turn my ignition key in the key hole to start the van though I can insert the key in. I do turn the steering wheel a little time to time. Then after trying for a few minutes sometimes waiting and trying again and again the ignition key does turn and the van starts.I never had this problem in Summer.

I have tried this, I have tried to have the alarm system removed and it cannot be removed as it is factory installed in the computer system. I have had it to 7 different mechanics with no results, just lots of money spent. No one seems to be able to fix this. I am being stranded alot lately. I am very tired of this problem and I cannot afford to trade it as it paid for.
