immobilizer problem

Occasionally, for some reason my 2003 Grand Caravan Sport fails to start in normal way. It will start and then 2-3 seconds the engine is immobilized. I try couple times and then the motor won't start at all. After removing the key from ignition and going through the same problem several times if finally starts. During all the times that engine gets shut off the anti-theft warning light comes on, so I'm sure it's the immobilizer. I tried both keys that I have for this van and it happens with both of them. Can anyone help me out with this problem? Thanks

I just bought a used 2003 Grand Caravan Sport & have been having the exact same problem. The problem started within 6 days of the purchase. I took it back to the dealer & they replaced the starter. 4 days later having the same issue. I find if it is not starting I have to take the key out of the ignition, open & shut the door, then try the key again & it will usually start. And the little red light to the right of the dash (anti-theft) turns off. When it starts & then stops right away the little red light is always on. What the hell is that! Let me know if find anything out as the dealer claims they do not know.

My van just died in my driveway with exact the same symptoms as your van showed. I'm positive it's the immobilizer problem. I think I'll giv it a few more tries and if it doesn't work I'll have to tow it to the dealer. My advise is don't let them replace anything differnet than immobilizer and the keys. The problem is in the electronics.

My van just died in my driveway and I am waiting for a tow truck. It displayed exactly the same symptoms as your van. I am 100% sure it's the immobilizer problem.

Heh Mike! So I took the van in & they diagnosed it as having an issue within the immobilizer. However, they could not make it default at the dealer!!!! So, they just reset it. They said they have never dealt with this before(ya right!) They think what may have happened is that the vehicle was turned off during a time the immobilizer resets itself which would be extremely rare! Well 5 days later the van is doing the same thing. So there I am 8 mo pregnant, stuck at costco with two other kids,& a piece of crap that won't start. Of course the little red light was on. I kept taking the key out of the ignition & trying again-nothing! I had to just let it sit for about 10 mins & they it finally started. I just do not feel like I should have to wait for 10 mins for the immobilizer to decide if it will reset it self & let me start the vehicle. Please let me know what your dealer says.

Similar issue. Thought it was my key. Tried to re-program without any luck.Tried to program a new blank key, that re-programmed ok, but still would not start. My Mine is at the dealer now.
They are waiting on a new "skim" module - I was told that is the module that talks to the key.
$275 plus $80 to diagnose

I have a 2005 Grand Caravan with the same symptons. Except in my case someone was trying to steal the van. The key housing has been broken out however when you put it back in position every thing worked for about 3 seconds now. The little red light is on and it will not even turn the engine over. I'm sure there will be a simple reset function, does any one know how this model is reset.

My son has the same problem with his 2003 Caravan Sport. The usual method he uses si, when it won't start the first try or two, he takes the flat of his hand and gives the underside of the steering column a few heavy swats. This is where the module is located. It usually starts. I say usually, but not always. Sometimes he gets out and gives a few heavy raps to the fuse box, or the" brain box' under the hood. I think its on either the front firewall or the side fenderwall. I haven't seen him do it, so don't know the precise position. So far he has gotten it going, but it's pretty frustrating! I've been told by a mechanic that it's probably a bad connection at the module. If that's so, shouldn't that be fixable? Shrug!
