04 G caravan Loud noise from front end, sounds like bad bearing or Pulley?

My 2004 Grand Caravan started making a "growling sound" It sounded like a bad bearing, I brought it in to a shop and the mechanic said it was the alternator. I changed it and replaced the belt. The sound went away. 3 months later the sound was back, louder than ever. Brought it in to Dodge dealer, they said I needed a new power steering pump and water pump. I changed both and the sound never went away. It makes the sound when in drive and the brake is applied or in reverse and the brake is applied. It doesn't make the noise when in park or neutral. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any suggestions?

My 2004 Town and Country is doing the same thing. A kind of loping growling noise. Can't hear it in drive or at road speeds but really hear it in in reverse or drive with foot on the brake.

Same thing happeningto my 2002 Caravan. When I use a large screwdriver as a stethescope the sound is most prevalent on the alternator. But after reading other posts Im not sure now.

Our 2995 Caravan with a 2.4L 4 cylinder was making a growling noise when in gear with the a/c on. I diagnosed it myself and found it was the a/c belt tensioner... it rattled quite alot when the a/c compressor kicked in. After replacing the tensioner.. all is well.

I have a 2002 caravan se and I get a low growl for 1-2 seconds after turning off the engine. I'm thinking alternator clutch assembly but don't know if that is correct. 3.3L flexfuel.

A bad clutch on an alternator would make a light rattling sound that would change the sound a bit when put in drive. I don't recommend this ,if your not mechanically inclined Put your hand on the alternator, while it is running, it should feel smooth. if it shakes, and vibrates you have a bad bearing./s You could also put a piece of heater hose between your ear, and the alternator to ee for sure if the alternator bearings are your problem. paul

I had the same noise, I was the pulley on the alternator. This is a special design the pulley and clutch system. I just replace the entire alternator assembly and the noise went away.

Good luck

I recently diagnosed my growling noise to be the pulley on the alternator. It is a separate serviceable piece. It is called an automatic decoupler puller(ADP). You have to remove the alternator, on most cars, to swap this piece out. There is a special tool needed, that you will find at your auto parts store. Sound will be gone.

I have a 2008 Grand caravan. my van is parked bit uphill due to the drive way. I the mornings, when i change the gear to reverse, it doesn't move smoothly. I can feel that it is struggling and also it makes a huge noise. as if, it is struggling to come out of some lock.
took to the dealership many times, but they returned the van saying they couldn't replicate and issue. so frustrated.
Can any one please tell me what the issue could be?

The growling sound comes from the alternator. I had the same problem on my 05 3.8. I replaced the alternator 10K miles ago or more and the sound hasn't come back.

Answer: mine did that for the first160,000 miles! It's meaningless. And auto techs are right. Don't worry about it.

Yes it is putting pressure on the park pawl. Use your parking brake first when you park on a hill and then put it in park. The dealer should have told you this! I'd find another dealer if they couldn't diagnose this simple problem!
