My 2004 Grand Caravan started making a "growling sound" It sounded like a bad bearing, I brought it in to a shop and the mechanic said it was the alternator. I changed it and replaced the belt. The sound went away. 3 months later the sound was back, louder than ever. Brought it in to Dodge dealer, they said I needed a new power steering pump and water pump. I changed both and the sound never went away. It makes the sound when in drive and the brake is applied or in reverse and the brake is applied. It doesn't make the noise when in park or neutral. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any suggestions?

My 2004 Town and Country is doing the same thing. A kind of loping growling noise. Can't hear it in drive or at road speeds but really hear it in in reverse or drive with foot on the brake.

Same thing happeningto my 2002 Caravan. When I use a large screwdriver as a stethescope the sound is most prevalent on the alternator. But after reading other posts Im not sure now.

Our 2995 Caravan with a 2.4L 4 cylinder was making a growling noise when in gear with the a/c on. I diagnosed it myself and found it was the a/c belt tensioner... it rattled quite alot when the a/c compressor kicked in. After replacing the tensioner.. all is well.

I have a 2002 caravan se and I get a low growl for 1-2 seconds after turning off the engine. I'm thinking alternator clutch assembly but don't know if that is correct. 3.3L flexfuel.

A bad clutch on an alternator would make a light rattling sound that would change the sound a bit when put in drive. I don't recommend this ,if your not mechanically inclined Put your hand on the alternator, while it is running, it should feel smooth. if it shakes, and vibrates you have a bad bearing./s You could also put a piece of heater hose between your ear, and the alternator to ee for sure if the alternator bearings are your problem. paul
