I have a 2001 durango with 112,000 miles on it. I started to hear a slight clanking noise when I was driving. I jacked it up and I heard the noise coming from the drive shaft and tansfer case area, towardsthe front end of the car. It's a really loud clanking noise. When I'm out on the road and not driving in 4 wheel drive, I still hear it but it's not as loud. I rarley use 4 wheel drive so I'm not sure what it is. Any suggestions?

I have a 2001 durango 4x4. When i turn from a dead stop I get a loud banging noise until I straighten out. Even then I still hear a noise almost like I have a rock in the hub cap. I think it is the automatic hubs for the 4 wheel drive system. Can the auto hub locks be dry and can you lube them in anyway? Anyone have any suggestions.

Your problem lies in the cv-joint on the front driveshaft. The joint is out of grease and is destroying itself. you need a new front driveshaft.

I'm removing my front shaft for the exact same problem. I plan on keeping it out until I find a drive shaft that isn't made of gold :(

I have a noise In front end of 2001 Durango , have replaced both front shfts and still have same popping noise especially when 4 wheel engaged . have even told to pull output shaft and replace the u-joints also someone said it could be carrier bearing on same shaft. any input would be appreciated

I am having a noise (louder when shifted in 2WD) in the front of mine and the 4wd is not engaged when the lever is in 4WD. Mechanic says something is broke in the front differential.

I want to remove my front drive shaft on my 2002 dodge durango. Can I just remove it or is there any special steps I need to take or any parts I will need?
