dodge durango..2002..4.7 L..V8...very rough idle when engine is hot..mainly during summer months...drops down to 5000 rpm's..will only idle smooth if I turn on air or heater...also found sludge in oil on last oil change..added synthetic oil this time...does anyone else have the rough idle problem and were they able to correct it?

Jack your problem is the blower motor resistor. I have to replace mine two time now.

But the Darango stalls even if you have your foot on the gas. I loose power on the dash board as well.

Try cleaning your Idle air control valve. It's on the back of the throttle body, held on by two star drive screws, and an elecrical harness that will pop right of. Just take it off, clean it real good and pop it back on.
I had this problem myself, my Durango would just stall for no reason whenever I took my foot off the gas. I had to drive around with one foot on the gas and one on the brake just to keep the truck running.
Hope this helps!

I have the same problem. I bought my 2002 Durango the first week of March 2007. In those two months, it has been to the mechanic six times, two of which it went to a Dodge dealer. The past time they had it 12 days between the auto service and Dodge. Sure enough, it stalled again. They cleaned some valve, nothing. They replaced a pump and hose, nothing. They reprogramed the computer, nothing. My outcome: I'm back on the market. My dealership is trading it for another on the lot.

JUst found out the reason for stalling and rough idle conditions on 4.7 L V8 dodge durangos. and dakotas....poor design and location of the AIR INTAKE TEMP SENSOR....needs to be replaced by after market brand,,,,not chrysler brand because that will probably do the same thing....

The 5.9L has a vacuum leak as well and is sucking in the gasket and oil. I just had my '03 R/T taken care of today because it was internally buring about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. We'll see what happens a thousand miles from now.
Is this covered by a recall? I obviously do not have a warranty. How much did it cost you to have this fixed. I might have the vacume leak problem coming on. I checked my oil yesterday and was about 1 1/2 to 2 qts low (Yea I know I should check it more often). My MIL came on and went to Autozone, they checked the code for me and said it was a P1281 Manufacture control Fuel Air Metering. Which the guy who checked it said it ment there might be a vacume leak somewhere.

I have a 4.7L 2000 Dodge Durango with an engine tap. I am tearing down the motor and I have questions about the free play on the secondary timing chains... Is there anyone out there that can help me?

I have no heat! I've had a coolant flush recently and replaced my thermostat. If I let it warm up for about 20 min. I get a little heat. It seems like the faster I drive, the less heat I get! No-one knows what it could be. A blockage? A leak?
Sounds like the wrong thermostat was installed or it doesn't work. Go to you local parts store and buy a new thermostat and then boil it on the stove.. It should open and then close after it cools, if it does not then the thermostat is defective.........

we have recently bought a used 2000 model and we are experiencing some of the same problems. the air condition just will not get cold. we went and bought a do-it-yourself freon recharge kit. the meter says its perfectly pressurized.. but how can that be when its as if you just have the vent on? both back door locks do not automatically lock. the dealer is going to look at them for me and have already bought the universal part for them, which i am not real happy about.. but maybe they will work better than the dodge actuators. its aggravating because i have only had it for about 2 months. i knew about the locks, i just didnt think it was going to be such a pain in the ass.

>>dodgedradr: Should not speak at all if you can not spell. Besides that you are the one that maintained the vehicle.<<

>>dodgedradr: Let me let you all in on a little secret: First off that idiot light as you referred to it, is a MIL light "Malfunction Indicator Light". That means there is a "MALFUNCTION" hence the name.<<

Sounds like SOMEONE works for Daimler-Chrysler.{rolling eyes}

I truly love driving my 2000 5.2L Durango (~85,000 miles) but the repairs have been quite costly over the years.

I have experienced the wildly fluctuating oil pressure gauge that suddenly ended up in a blown engine (on the Interstate no less). I've also dealt with the randomly occurring engine light, computer miscommunication, strange emission problem, faulty thermostat, power lock issues, weird transmission performance, and constant suspension failures.

*As of today, the A/C and heat are shot, and for some reason it won't shift out of 1st gear until it's been driven for more than 10 minutes.*

In the past 24 months, we've spent $6400.00 on this piece of garbage -(new engine + various and sundry other COMMON Durango issues). As a bonus, the shop fixing my a/c just asked me about the really BAD front-end wreck I must have had (based on their visual inspection of a mangled condenser).

The car has never been wrecked - not even a tiny fender bender. They were shocked to say the least!

Obviously there is something really really wrong with this make/model vehicle. Everywhere I take it I hear the same thing, "Oh yeah, that's common to Durangos" and/or "We have another Durango in here for the same exact thing" and/or "The Dodge 318 engine is completely worthless."

Now I'm not bashing Dodge because I have a 14-year-old Intrepid that has been a DREAM. It's never had any major problems besides replacing an a/c compressor that died of old age. Our daughter will be driving it in the next few months and I'm not worried about her getting stranded at all.

So what is it about the Durango model??? And why isn't there some sort of class-action suit going on???

The problem is connected to the relay switch. Replace it and the problem should resolve itself.
However, you may want to investigate the reason for failure of the relay switch. Does the relay switch also control the engine and transmission fans? And if it does, have you experienced engine or transmission problems during this time period.

Which engine is it that everyone keeps having the oil pump and slidge problems with? Most people on this site (and other sites) do not specify. The only ones I have seen mentioned is the 4.7L. So does that mean the 5.9L is not having this problem? I hope not.
Does anyone know if the ball join recall for the 4x4's is still active?
I just got a t 2002 SLT 4x4 with the 5.9L and had not heard these problems till I came on here.
i bought my 2000 durango in jan and had to take it in for the powersteering and they replaced mine and said it was under recall

There are a couple of vacuum lines and a module to them on the left side of the engine compartment. The component tests for fuel system pressure/vacuum every so often on command front the engine management system. This piece or the vacuum lines commonly set the small evap leak code. I have this same issue and am getting ready to do the testing for repair.

Many vehicles have sludge problems. The smart move is to do an oil system cleanup additive that you pour in before and oil change. Then use good oil with fortifier or full synthetic oil with fortifier. I like BG CPR (compression performance restorer) to do the de-sludge and BG MOA (motor oil additive) after. I used the MOA for the last 2 oil changes and my 2002 4.7 no longer creates gell in it's Mobil 1. I always thought Mobil 1 was the best and couldn't be improved, But I've seen some tests on oils and started using the additive because the oil companies put in so little that the oil does not stand up. The tests that I saw said that the Walmart house brand is one of the oils which does best, so that's what I use now.

My 92 dakota had the same problem. Resistors are probably fried. On my truck it is on the firewall, passenger side, engine compartment held in by 2 metal screws. When you pull it out, it will look like a bunch of old heater coils - I bet some of them a rusted and broken.- Cheap part from dealer will fix.

Ok here is a new one for you smart guys. 2002 Durango 4.7L Airbag light has been coming on intermitantly for a couple of months. I tried to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for 30 min. (always worked on my Jap cars) but not on the durango. Open to any suggestions.
