I have a 2004 dodge durango 2wd 4.7L 9.25 axle 3.55 ratio
1.I have this whirring noise coming from the rear end! The noise is only there when I am accelerating or coming to a stop. I am hoping that it is just maybe some bearings in the rear! I am also looking for good parts but at a very reasonable price. Any suggestions on the problem & where to order parts??? 2. Wipers operate when I start the truck go back & forth a couple of times & then stop half way or when I use them they do not go at correct speed. Any Suggestions?? |

Accelerating and decelerating would indicate a worn pinion bearing in the differential. These rarely fail, unless a seal has failed and the lubricant has leaked out. Are you trying to describe a clunking sound? That would be a worn out u-joint. Both are relatively easy to diagnose. Jack up the back of the vehicle and place jack stands under the axles to secure it while you crawl under it. Block the front wheels as well! Release the park break, put the vehicle in neutral, crawl under the vehicle. Grip the driveshaft and twist it clockwise and CCWise. The should be no play in the u- joints. If there is play, you will hear, and feel the clunk. If so, you will need to replace the failed one. If you have a whirring sound, you'll need to check the differential fluid level. Let me know what you find! |

The second problem would initially indicate a faulty wiper motor. |

Dodge Man: the noise is more like driving down the road with big rugged tires! It's very annoying & thinking that a seal has broke now, cause I added some fluid 3days ago checked it today & couldnt feel any at all!! So I think it is a seal & a bearing which sounds better than the actual ring and pinion!!
Thanks |

You may be very surprised! If you've driven it, without gear fluid in the rear differential housing, the whole differential set is probably unsalvageable! Speaking of salvage, If I were you, I would start contacting salvage yards for a replacement axle. Take the differential cover off and check for metal shavings and the ring gear bevel edges. If they are still smooth, and there is no metal in the case, stop driving it immediately. You may get out of it with only a pinion bearing and a new seal. I would be surprised if you get off that easily. It still won't be a cheap fix. |

I am also trying to find like a shematic/diagram of the actual rear axle & differential. I can find one that is a 9.25 10bolt but not a 9.25 12 bolt! Are there any differences inside?

Try your local library! Check the reference section. Mine has all the MOTOR Manuals the big shops use. Basically the same info you will find in the manufacturers shop manuals. Very thorough on all aspects of each model. I have a subscription to AlldataDIY.com for my vehicles. It's helpful to some extent, but if I need more information than they provide, I head to the library. |
