my husband took our son to school today and on the way home the truck stalled out twice. He was able to restart it, but even before he turned the key, the RPMs reved. The check engine light came on. What could this be? I started it this afternoon and it ran for about 15 mins and then shut off.

I have a 02 Durango as well and I was having a similar problem with mine, I replaced the IAC valve (Idle Air Control) and it runs great now, this may not be your fix, but definentally get the codes read at your local mechanic shop!! Hope this helps!

I have a 2002 Dodge Durango that recently began stalling, mainly at stops. Last week I was on the freeway going 75 miles per hour and it stalled completely.

Took over an hour before I could start the car and have it hold an idle.

RPM's fluctuate a lot, especially when climbing small hills (won't hold and the engine forces the transmission to change gears a lot).

Mechanic has seen the problem but cannot get a code out of the computer. He's replaced the o2 sensors three times, along with the idle control motor, cleaned the fuel injection system, checked the fuel pump and nothing seems to be wrong. The car just won't hold RPM's while traveling and at stops.

I've tried to sell it bet can't even get an offer. Dealer won't take it in in trade either.

I have a 2002 Durango also and recently been having trouble keeping it running (stalling at idle and also when driving). Had a mechanic attempt to fix it and the dealer also claims there is nothing wrong with it.

Cliff,

Stalling at stop signs is caused by either the Idle Air Control Valve and the irregular shifting is an indication of the Throttle Position Sensor (around $24.00). These two are easily replaced - just two hex screws holding them in. They sit on the drivers side of the throttle body right next to each other. Just pull the electrical connectors off and replace them - takes 5 mins. This should straighten her right up.

I have an 2002 durango 45,000 miles. No previous transmission problem outside some occassional stern shifting. Backed out of garage yesterday, put in drive and it killed the engine. Reverse still works fine but any forward gear will kill motor.

We have a 2005 Dodge Durango and it stalls once a month. We've taken it to the dealer several times and they dont know how to fix it. They say the problem is fictitious. So we just live with it. Cant wait till we can afford a new car. Maybe Dodge will get its act together one day.

I have a 2006 Durango with 75,0000 miles. Am replacing the cam sensor for the second time in the past year.....when it goes out the vehicle will stall randomly while I'm driving it and the check engine light comes on. I'm wondering if this is a common problem for other owners.

hello and i have bee n frustrated by irratic symptoms of my 03 durango !When it works 100 % its a great truck,in relation to your rpm issues that dont throw codes ,,,,,the most likely symptom is a failing CPS sensor. Before completely failing this sensor will cause all your listed symptoms.Change it before you are calling the towtruck to take it to the dealer~as mine went.

My 2002 dodge durango will start but as soon as I put it drive or reverse it will die. But if I manage to put in drive and push gas it will drive normal and will die at any stop.

i have a 2002 durango and havent had no major problems with it but today i was turning and in mid turn my truck died so i put it in neutral and cracked it back up and went to sonic then while i was leaving sonic i died again and then a third time while on my way to get gas it just started idealing below 500 rpms and i dont know why it is idealing low so i checked everything and the o2 sensor fuse is missing and ive never messed with it since i bought last year so i dont know why it is acting stupid all of a sudden. anyone got any ideas?

The problem if the durango starts and then stalls is the MAP sensor pigtail wires. These are the wire coming off the sensor, the plastic begins to crack then the sensor signal is disrupted. Untape and separate then retape, or wiggle the wiring on the MAP sensor if in a rush. The MAP sensor is located at front between the AC and altenator.

I too have a 2002 durango 5.9L 4X4. Back in march it was stalling when the gas pedel was lifted, so I changed the IAC valve. Today it stated all over agian. Stalling when you take your foot of the gas. I was told to change the TPS or the MAP senors. Or purhaps I have a bad IAC valve again. Any suggestions?
