I have a 2001 dodge dakota. It cranks and even turns over but it won't stay firing. In order to get it to turn over i have to press the gas pedal and then it smells like gas in and around the truck. Any ideas? Spark plugs? Fuel pump? Something cheaper?(please)

2003 Dodge Dakota 4.7 engine. Have to start 2 to three times. Dealer did tuneup replaced a vacumn hose spent $500.00 but same problem. Tired of spending money and problem not fixed. Thought I would let it break and fix but this has been going on for 3 months. At this rate starter will go out. The only time it starts right up is just a few mins after shutting it off.

My post from Thursday March 17th indicates 82 comments but I have yet to see One comment. Those are old comments for completely different issues than mine. Thanks.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Sport, 6cylinder, front wheel drive. My problem is: The engine does not turn over, replaced the crankshaft position sensor that was reading out on diagnostics...still the same problem...sometimes it will start and sometimes it will just crank but not turn over...so then I replaced the distributor cap...did find alot of build up on the inside of the cap terminals. It started after that and ran for a bit...turned it off for 10 minutes...then it would not turn over again. No engine light on anymore but the problem persists...any suggestions?

I just bought a 2002 Dodge Dakota Sport P/U and when the weather (not it) is cold it just won't start. It turns over, but it like it isn't getting gas or spark. Someone told me it might be the amphibian switch. But when I called Dodge to ask, the service advisor said he had never heard of such a thing. HELP!!!

I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota 4 cylinder (2,5 ltr) that will not start. I have fresh gas in the tank. I drove it 2-weeks ago with no problems until the other day when I wanted to take it to get smogged. I replaced the cap and rotor because they were worn. I have no voltage up to the coil or distributor. I jumped the coolant sensor to bypass it. I checked the crank sensor but there is only 15 ohms coming out of one of three pins. The others have nothing. I had auto-zone check the coil and they said the ohms reading on it is within limits. Does anyone have any ideas.

I just bought a 93 dodge dakota 4x2 Club Cab and the first couple times I started it it started right away. Now I cant even get a noise from the starter. My battery is good. Can anybody tell me what the problem might be?
you would need a new starter, if the starter is notmakeing a sound. or have someone hitting the starter with a wrench or whatevr while you are trying to turn it over.

My 2000 6cyl dodge dakota won't start! Trying to start it. I drained the battery...took the battery to be checked, it checked fine and they charged it too! Befoe I took out the battery I got a boost and off I went. Got home noticed the battery charging on the way home. But also noticed that the odometer reading was pulsing. Once home I turned it off and also with.door open and key out and there was a clicking noise in the glove compartment( likely the heater core or there abouts).
So I got out closed the door and all quiet.
So I have purchased a new starter motor relay.
But would like your feedback. Thanks!

Hi Folks
I have a 2002 dakota 3.9 V6. It only fails to start when it is raining or after it has rained. over the past year it is getting worse. Put new cap-rotor on.
No Moisture in cap when it fails. It acts like it wants to start. I have even pulled the coil wire off when it fails to start and it has spark. NO RAIN - NO PROPLEM ??????
