I have a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan. It started this morning then I stopped for gas, then no start just clicking. Started it with a jump then drove it on the work. During my lunch I tried it. Still just clicks. Jumped it, the van turns over fast but no start. Now all the dash lights are out and no dome light even with the ignition on, but I do have radio. It is like the electrical went dead, but still turns over but no start. Any ideas???

Hi Jeremy,

I have the same symptoms but have the original key. Did your issue ever replicate with your key?
Jeremy wrote:
I have recently been having starting problems with my 2002 dodge caravan as well. It would start then die a second and a half later..It would do this 2-3 times then nothing at all. I thought disconecting the cables would reset the computer but that didn't work...after a couple hours it would run just fine but then seem to have the same problem...and this wouldn't happen everyday either. Anyway I finaly called the chrysler service department (after messing around with the starter) and the tech asked if i was using the same keys all the time. He said that if you have made any keys off the original there is a built in security thing that will kill the engine... I was using a key that didn't have that thick plastic rubber end. I immediately tried the original key and it started right up...tried the other key and had problems...so maybe the issue could be in the security. This problem would only happen to my wife..but I was the one with the original and never had any problems with it. I find it crazy to be just a key...but that seems to be my issue for now.

I have an intermittent electical failre. Luckily I have not had the starter problems you all are talking about, but my power door locks and power doors periodically just stop working. this will go on until you leave the van parked for at least 40 minutes. The problem is I can't ever get it to do its thing for the dealer! They won't put parts in it becuase the factory charges them if the old removed part tests good.
I am having the same problem on our dodge...
Have you found a solution??

2005 Caravan, all of a sudden the head lights come on whenever a door is opened stays on when ignition is on and when off dinging starts when you open the door (lights still on) like you have left the keys in the ignition. Lights do go off after a designated time. Is this a computer problem, or something else? Also left window will not operate.

We have a 2001 town and country (chrystler but they're the same engins) and we've been having the same starter problems as you all. We've tried turning the ignition half way, wait a few seconds and then turn it on, that worked for a while and not anymore. A mechanic friend told us to bang on the starter and that would get the car to start, it did for a while. The weird thing is, somedays there's no problem what so ever. You get in, turn it on and it starts. Unlike this morning (and it's cold this morning) I turn it, all the guages work, the lights work, the radio works and nothing. I did notice the letter P in in the digital mileage guage when I tried turning it over, don't know what that means. Anyway....Help.
The banging on the starter and that fixed it is about diagnosic of a worn out starter. As the starter wears, the brushes do not make as good a contact and the same thing with the solenoid attached to the starter. When you bang on it, especially while a second person has the key turned, that sometimes jostles the connections enough to make better contact and work. But this is living on borrowed time and is not a fix. The starter likely needs replaced.

2005 grand caravan....starter trouble. Been to the dealer 3 times and the first time they gave it back and said it was fine. They have THUS far 1) changed fuel pump
2) new fuel injectors
3) new computer
4) checked valves for carbon buildup
5) new sensor for the crank shaft
As of today it has been in the shop for 2 weeks, this time and almost a month total. Got a call today that the dealer still doesn't know what is wrong, but they want their loaner car back! Somebody help us!:(

Same probs w/ my 2001 Grand Caravan this past summer. Battery was fine, but Firestone said starter was faulty and replaced it. The next morning, same thing--wouldn't start! Called them to have it towed back to their shop & went out to leave the key in the seat and thought I'd try it again for kicks--and it started!! Who knows what was really wrong...just paid for a "new starter" I apparently didn't need! Fortunately, no problems since.

Have had several Dodge vans, but this 2002 has trouble starting. I turn the key several times and nothing. After about 5 or 6 tries it starts. The frequency of difficulty starting is increasing. Have been to two dealers and they cannot find the problem. We should start a major protest to the company.

Try turning the key to start position, even with nothing happening, and hold it there. We sometimes have to hold the key in this position 30 seconds before it starts, but it finally does every time (ours is an 07 Grand SXT).

I have also had the problems with my 2005 Dodge Caravan starting or just dying and it could not be replicated numberous times taking it to the dealers. I finally got the problem to replicate itself as I was getting ready to leave the dealers in frustration once again. I was told the the problem was a misfire problem. I just had my door lock stop like so many other posters and as I did your remedy of unpluging the battery it worked. While under the hood I saw a sticker saying that the control module was reprogramed due to the misfire. I have not had the problems with the starting or dying of my Caravan. Lets home that the unplugging the battery cables will continue to work for the door lock problems. I just disconnected them and waited a few seconds to reconnect and all works fine again.

My 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8L has had same problem with starter. I have found if I place it in neutral and move the vehicle slightly then place it back in park the vehicle will start. I think the neutral start switch may be the culprit. Has anyone tried similar or had neutral start switch replaced?

My 2002 Caravan has had this problem intermittantly for the last few months. I haven't had the opportunity to try your trick yet, but was told by my electrical guy (who had my car for 3 days straight during one trip to the shop, and couldn't duplicate the problem) to just keep turning the key until it starts. This has worked for me so far.
tcj wrote:
07 Grand caravan SXT - No luck at the dealer- they started it successfully 20 times (that's a pleasant thought, eh?).
Could someone with the starter motor failure problem try this: Turn the key all the way to the starter position and hold it there until it kicks in (and the engine starts). We're trying this now and have had 100% success so far. Sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds of nothing happening with the key turned all the way to the start position, but then it kicks in.
Please post back here whether or not this works for you!
