I have a 2001 Grand Caravan. Over a year ago, I started noticing a slight gas smell coming from under the hood. Took it to Firestone twice and the dealership once. Neither could find the problem. It's gotten worse and you can smell gas when the car is running and you walk by the van. Not sure what else to do. Hasn't blown up yet but it can't be good!! Any suggestions other than trading it in??

Hi Susan,

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I have the exact same problem with my 99 Dodge Carvan. It all started when the dealership changed my fuel pump and flushed my fuel injectors. Now I have an intermittent gas smell that comes into the compartment through the vents. I have been back to the dealership but the smell miraculously doesn't occur when I'm there. They have fully checked the vehicle and can't find evidence of any leaking gas.
It's frustrating as I'm not going crazy. This fuel smell is there.

Have either of you found a solution to this problem? I have a 1998 grand caravan with the same intermittent gas smell coming from the heater vents. I have taken it to the shop twice and again they have not found the problem.

This is probably the leaking fuel rail problem, dealers know about it, new "0" rings need installing they deteriorate and leak, you don't see the actual leak, just smell it. It is serious so get it done as soon as possible.

I took the advice of what I read here and replaced all the o rings. the next day I had more smell. I finally moved a few things out of the way and waited for everything to dry. I stuck my head down there and watched while someone started the car. The fuel was coming from the small pressure valve mounted on the end of the fuel rail. (2001 dodge grand caravan.) Sometimes it leaks and sometimes it doesnt. I guess I am going to have to try to change out the fuel rail.

I have the same problem. I have a 2001 Grand caravan. I smell it when I start the van and then it goes away. Sometime I can smell it after I stop and walk by the front end. Never can I see anything. Is anyone sure of what it is - hate troubleshooting for $70 dollars an hour.

Dodge Caravans have leaky O-Rings that need to be replaced. 3.3L & 3.8L engines are under a recall(free repair at Dodge) but 3.0 liters are not.

I have the same problem too. Only I have a 94 nissan. You can smell gas fumes as the car is running and when I lift the hood. At first I thought it was because my pipe that goes to the exhaust rusted off and deteched from the muffeler, but now,I smell it under the hood. Does anyone know what that is from yet?

MY PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED.
My 2001 Grand Caravan has 165000 miles and all of the sudden I had the same problem. The fuel was coming from the small pressure valve mounted on the end of the fuel rail.(2001 dodge grand caravan.) Sometimes it leaks and sometimes it doesn't. The problem is that this this pressure valve is not sold separately. I changed the fuel rail which comes with the valve. You must have your mechanic take the whole piece apart and get the part number from it. Otherwise the dealer won't be able to order the correct part. This part can only be found at the dealer.

I have a 96 nissan quest with the same problem. It went away when I changed the fuel filter.

I have 2002 with the 3.8L.
I was quoted $87 for the Rail with valve, and the labor.
Total comes in under $300 (ouch), but that doesn't ensure my sudden roughness and occasional cylinder mis-fire (was that redundant?) will also be cured. I have to wait through the weekend for the nearest part to arrive, so I won't know until late next week.

I have a 2009 grand caravan with 45000 km with rough idle.had spark plugs and wires and throttle body flush and fuel injectors cleaned. Now I have rough idle and gas fumes inside van and at times a gas peddle that does not respond.I have been back to dealership several times with no solution yet. I will let them know about the fuel rail problem. Thanks

I have a 1992 Dodge Caravan that I have been experiencing the intermittent fuel smell with ever since I bought it. It is so strong sometimes it gives me a headache. Here's the kicker. I have replaced the motor, yes the motor (more correctly the block), and replaced several fuel lines and still get the smell. My mechanic had the van for awhile and was able to smell it so he knows it's not my imagination. I will ask my mechanic about this fuel rail suggestion and see what he says. The parts off my old block where put on the new block so if the fuel rail is a part that would have been switched to the new block I would be grateful if this is the answer to the problem. The only thing I have not replaced in this vehicle is the rear end, and I'm sure that's coming.

I have a 3.3L 2001 Grand Caravan that has a gas leaking from the top of the gas tank, which only leaks when the tank is full. I called 3 Dodge dealerships & they all said they know nothing about recalls for fuel leaks on 2001 Caravans. I don't want to pay for an expensive repair if I don't have too. I'm looking for advise to find out if there were any recalls for this type of problem
