My 2002 dodge caravan makes a growling/grinding noise when the ac is on and only when it is in gear(drive or Reverse) The noise is not noticed when the ac is off and the car is in gear. If the car is in gear and I turn the ac off no noise noticed. With ac on and in park or netural no noise noticed. I have replaced the altenator, belt and ac (compressor, evaporator, and valve) Still having noise, any ideas?

I am experiencing the same exact problem with my 2002 Dodge Caravan. I was wondering if you ever found a solution. I have replaced the AC compressor and serpentine belt. Growling noise was OK for about an hour, but is back with a vengeance. I am not sure if I will cause worse damage.

I do not notice the noise when I am driving, but when I am stopped and in gear (neutral and park are fine). But the best way to describe it is a "grinding/growling" noise. Could it be tension on a belt of pulley????

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have replaced the altanator as well. Seemed to help at first. I still hear the noise just not as loud. I seem to think now it may be something loose and viberating when compressor kicks on. Still no sure what it could be. Sorry I can't help.

I am having the same problem as you, grinding/growling noise while in gear but not in N or P. My van is a 2003 Dodge with only 165000 K and this just started. The last post on this site was in July 2011 so I don't know if any of you had this problem resolved, any insight would be helpful.

Sorry, it is a year later. I have not gotten any solutions. I have tried replacing the serpentine belt (noise stopped for about 2 weeks) and the AC compressor. I do suspect that it has something to do with the belt since it only makes the noise when in gear (not neutral). My air continually needs to be recharged (but I do not think this is related to the noise). I am at the point where I question if should I put any more money into solving this, when I know I will be needing a new vehicle soon (within the next year or two).

It is frustrating to get no answers. I am certain that this is not an uncommon problem.

I have the same noise when the heater is on (in winter, of course).

Try the electric fans... they come on with a/c on and in reverse. there is a TSB on them for an anti-shutter kit to be installed. They rattle inside the fan shroud. It's really annoying, but I just got done diagnosing my mother's van, installed the kit & voala!!! no noise

Can you tell me more about this anti-shutter kit? Where do you buy it and can you install it yourself?
Thanks.

I have a 2002 GC with the same problem, growling in drive and reverse. I am getting ready to dig in and find the problem, but I do not see that anyone else has found the problem. I am going to begin by removing the serpentine belt and running the engine in drive and reverse to see if hear it.

Anyone know how many miles this sound can go on??? Do I just need to learn to deal with the sound?

2004. Have the noise an noticed it at low rpm. When stopped in drive idle goes down to about 600. Can bring up to 800 and noise stops. Saw some where about a part for idle increase is under air cleaner but cannot find. Anyone know?

Still trying for additional on this subject. I have heard same noise in parking lots from other dodge caravans and Chrysler van. I found something on line, and now cannot find again, about idle valve under air cleaner. With car in gear it makes noise as idle goes to 600 rpm. I hold foot on brake and goes away when I get up to 800 rpm.??????
