My 2002 Jeep Liberty has been wonderful. However, the check engine light has come on recently. We have replaced the gas cap with a new one from the dealership, but the light didn't go off. Should it reset itself?
Also, a couple of times when activating my turn signal, the dome lights have flashed on and then back off quickly. Any ideas?

I had the upper ball joint break on 9/6/2007. I was at a traffic light, the light changed, I started to go, then the vehicle wouldn’t hardly move, I managed to get off the road, got out and looked at the tire, the upper ball joint had broken and the front passenger tire was almost lying completely horizontal under the vehicle. I was in the vehicle with my wife and oldest child. I had the lower ball joints replaced in Nov. of 2006 when I received a recall notice on them. I now have my vehicle in the shop waiting to hear what they have to say. I still have the remainder of my factory warranty and an extended warranty also. This was on a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport with only 72,000. This vehicle is never off road, mainly highway miles with some city miles. This should never have happened. This is a very poor design and could have been fatal had I been driving on the highway when this happened. Has anyone else had this issue?

I just replaced my second window regulator in my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I also had to replace one in my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. All repairs cost around $350 each. The 2003 has 60K miles and the 1997 has 120K miles. Noticed the regulator failed during days when the temperature was above 90 degrees F.

Since you work for a Jeep dealsership, I was wondering if you could help with a problem my wife has been having with her 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited. The vehicle has 88K miles and runs well. About 2 months ago, the check engine light came on and wouldn't go off. My wife took it in for an early oil change and diagnostic. The oil change didn't solve the problem and the diagnostic showed nothing wrong. Then a few days later, the light went off. A few days later the light came back on again. She then brought the vehicle to a mechanic and, after diagnosing the vehicle for over 2 hours, decided that the gas cap needed to be replaced. The light went off. 2 days later, the light came back on again. Brought the vehicle back to the same mechanic who did a full oil change, tune-up and replaced the gas sensor. The light went off. That was yesterday. Today, the light came back on again. I refuse to bring it to another mechanic and have them "guess" at the problem, charge us an arm and a leg and wind up having the liht come back on a few days later. Any suggestions?
pop the hood and listen for a whistle. near the intake. i had that same problem with the same solutions with the same results. a hose dry-rotted and was leaking air under the hood. i replaced the hose, cleared the code, voila! problem gone never to return.

I had the same problem when the battery was almost dead. I put a new battery in and that problem went away immediately

I have a similar but different issue--the dome light will turn on by itself and stay on until I use the turn signal. Annoying but not dangerous ...

On the dangerous side, the headlights will flicker on and off when turned on from time to time. Driving at night is a concern. Everyone on the road is probably thinking I am warning them to slow down ;)

I have 2002 Jeep Liberty, 189,000 miles ( in sales) and it has been mostly trouble free. The only issues I have had
1. A/C went out pump went bad at 160,000 miles.~ 900 dollar fix
2. The two ball joint recalls (free)
3. Airbag sensors cracked at 170,000 miles (400 bucks to fix)
4. Rust on the top under the black trim at 100,000 miles ( re-painted it myself)
Other than that, it has been trouble free with just oil changes, tire changes, and fluid changes for me.

I have a 2004 Liberty and just had all three brake lights quit. I've learned NOT to go to the dealership first and went to Brakes Plus. They said it should have been recalled by Chrystler because when one tail light goes out, it power surges the other two. This caused major overheating and the sockets were FRIED! In fact, it was SO hot that it started to melt the red light cover!! FYI..if you have a tail light out on your Liberty get it fixed ASAp and save yourself $180 on new sockets!

I have a 2004 Liberty and I have about 23,000 miles on it. I hear a "whoo whoo whoo" sound when driving it. Sounds like it's coming from the front right wheel. Hadn't really noticed it before because the radio drowned it out. Anyone else notice this before.

I HAVE A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY AND THE SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER KEEP GOING OUT. I HAVE HAD THE OUT GOING SENSOR IN OCT OF 2006 THEN REPLACED THE TWO OTHER SENSORS IN MAY OF 2007 AND YESTERDAY AGAIN THE SPEEDOMETER AND THE ODOMETER ALONG WITH ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH HAVE COME ON. ALONG WITH THE FACT THE JEEP DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS SAYING I NEED A NEW REAR END. HELP!!!!
02 Jeep Liberty:
My rear driver window motor was replaced last year. The headlights were not working. Fogs and High beams had no issues. I hit a bump and the headlights came on. Went off again. The speedometer and odometer were not working. During ball joint recall, I had the dealer do a diagnostic ($250). He said the Body Control Module needed to be replaced. I replaced the BCM and the Junction (fuse) box myself because the dealer wanted $850 to do the job. The headlights now work but the speedometer still does not work. The odometer is on but does not advance. How do I fix the Speedometer and Odometer? Are they a sensors, and where are they on the car?

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty 4 x 2 with a towing package, the problem that I have is that the battery light keeps coming on after going on long trips, the next day after the long trip the light will come on after ideling at a light. When you rev up the engine the battery light goes off. I brought it into the dealership and they said they could not find anything wrong with it. It also did not show up on the computer as well. I did have the same problem with the engine light going on but they fixed this problem as well as put a new battery in it. But I would love to find out why the battery light keeps coming on. The car only has 15,500 miles on it and yes the mileage per gallon stinks too. But I do love my Jeep Liberty. Does any one have a clue why this is happening. So far the car has been in the shop 5 times and still no clue why the battery light. Even the experts can not fix this one. Please help thanks!

We've had the following repairs done on our 2004 Liberty Limited...

Ball Joints (recall)
Rear Driver Window Regulator replaced (twice!!)
Front Passenger Window Regulator replaced
Front Driver Window Regulator replaced

All this and still under 26,000 miles and no more than maybe 50 miles of light off-roading (4x2)

Everytime we've been in for the window repair, we've always bumped into another Liberty owner with the same problem

So much for "trail rated"....hmph.
