Chrysler's Mack Avenue Engine plant, in danger of closing next year, is expected to gain final assembly work for a new Maserati SUV. Though the decision is not yet final, the work would create as many as 450 jobs for the plant, allowing the 150 who work there to retain their jobs if the union's tentative contract with Chrysler is ratified, people briefed on the plans told the Free Press Friday. That would add to a string of job announcements made this week by the Detroit Three as they wrap up their deals with the UAW. On Thursday, workers at UAW Local 51 in Detroit were told that the body of the SUV would be assembled at Jefferson North, and workers at the nearby Mack Avenue Engine plant would install the interior, engine and trim. Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne previously said that the Maserati Kubang SUV, unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show, would be built at Jefferson North Assembly. Mack Avenue Engine plant No.2 was in danger of closing because the 3.7-liter V6 engine made at that plant is scheduled to be phased out. Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson declined comment. "It's a testament to the UAW negotiations and to the confidence that Chrysler is showing in the union to even contemplate finishing the Maserati SUV in the U.S.," said Rebecca Lindland, an analysT

No different than working at SHAP, JNAP or BAP. But at least you'll have full seniority. While you're out while they're retooling they can break you in on one of those assembly plants.
