For the past 2 months my van has had moments when it will not start. All the lights come on, the radio etc, and when we first go to start it, it turns over but won't stay running. We did a little research and found that it had something to do with the secuirty system - if we used the original key when this happens, it will start. This worked for a while but now we have to let it sit for about an hour and then try again. Then it starts. I'm wondering if it still something to do with the alarm system. Has anyone else run into this problem???

Thanks!

i have exactly the same thing happening. i can try starting it 4-5 times and it will start and then die immediately. the dash says alarm set. when i start it again it will not turn over. then if it sets for a few minutes it will start just fine. i think it is the alarm system as well.

I have had the same exact problem. I sent it to the garage on several occasions, and the mechinic wasn't ablt to diagnos it because everytime he tried to start it the van woudl turn over. FINALLY!! he was able to get a reading and it was the alarm, and a new main computer had be installed. I was very pleased to finally have this problem resolved.
However!! 3 days after having the main computer replaced this starting and shutting down problem started all over again. It rakes anywhere from a few hours to two days to reset itself. I have stopped using the alarm clicker, and stopped locking my car altogether. Nothing seems to work!!! Please help!! [email protected]

I have a 1999 T&C minvan limited edition that has been experiencing the same problem for the past year. It will start and stall about 3 to 5 times then the vehicle will "lock-up". Everything still works, radio, horn, lights, etc, however, when you turn the key it will do nothing. It always starts the next day. We have spend over $1000 in unsuccessful repairs. Replaced ignition switch, some wire and the Body Control Modual on 8-20-07 ($737) and three days later the same thing happen in at the beach in Ogunquit,ME. We had to stay the night and it started the next morning. I am determined to get my money back from Chrysler and get this problem corrected. Please keep me informed. Maybe we can solve this problem.

We have 98 T&C with the same problem. My husband disconnects the battery cable and reconnects it and it starts. This is not convenient. Does anyone know if the alarm system can be disconnected?

Can you tell me if your mileage indicator is working when you are experiencing this problem or can you see if the vehicle is in P R N D L position?

I have a 1999 T&C limited with the same problem for the past year. At the beginning it would start after a few minutes, but lately I would have to wait days. I had to leave it many times in parking at Lowes, Circuit City etc. for days. What I notice though, when I would turn the key in the ignition if the mileage indicator and the P R N D 3 L would not turn on, the car would not start. In my situation was a loose contact.

Hi All! I HAD this problem with my 1998 Chrysler Town and Country. It would start and immediately shut off. I would repeat this 4 times, and it would not do anything. I let it sit for about 45 minutes and it would start and run fine. It was doing this once every few months. I checked with the dealers in our area...they had NO CLUE. My mechanic checked for codes...no codes.
I went online, and found a number of folks who had this problem, and changed a lot of expensive thing s, but it did not fix it. I found someone online who said they had a fix. When it acts up, hit the dash. The problem is the CIRCUIT BOARD behind the instrument panel. I tried this on the next "act up", and it worked. I tried to start and it shut off. Tried again and shut off. I then turned the key on and banged the dash ahead of the instrument panel (one good bang---somewhere between laying your hand on the dash, and trying to put your hand thru the dash). It then started and ran fine. The problem started to happen more often, and once while I was driving, the gauges started to "act up", and various dash lights were going on and off. Yep, one good bang on the dash (while driving) fixed er right up!
I was going to have my mechanic replace the circuit board, but he said I should take it to the dealer because the gauges have to be recalibrated, etc. I found the part online for about $325, but going to the dealer they charged $425 plus labor...$589 for the fix. They "diagnosed" the van and told me that they found NO PROBLEM. I said to just change the circuit board...they said they were not convinced that would fix it. I said to JUST PUT IN A NEW CIRCUIT BOARD. It has been six months, and have had no problem. GOOD LUCK!

Yes - we are having exactly the same problem as yourself. So now its been 9 months since you replaced the circuit board behind the dash. Has the problem returned or has it been dealt with?

I've been home all day because my 1998 LXI T & C won't start. Won't turn over but interior lights, radio etc work. This has been going on for 6 months but today is the worst. I've hit the dash board (which seemed to work several times) and disconnected battery etc. Has been starting fine mostly until this last week but I am tired of getting stranded and can't trust it anymore. Somebody told me to park on a hill so when it won't start you can put it in neutral and roll and start. Hard to do in Florida sometimes.

I have the same problem. All the searching I've done, I've noticed that it's fairly common. rather than try to replace the circuit board or repair it, I bought a new instrument cluster for about $100. Just installed it, hoping that fixes the problem. Someone else posted the above link, I found it and thought I would share with all those that have similar problems.

I've had the exact issue - 1998 tc lxi doesn't start - gauges go out and is basically unreliable. I even have the tumbler issue where you have to hit the key to turn the starter. Anyway it used to work with the hitting the dash, but now the car may not start for weeks/months. Can anyone verify what is the true fix for this issue. I just see my money vanishing before my eyes.

Thanks!
