Wow real surprised to see all these pt cruiser A/C faults, I have a 2005 2.4 Turbo, last week the A/C stopped, took to a decent guy who checked the system and could not find a leak, he recharge the system, all was great worked cold for 1 day, the back to warm, took it back again last Friday July 24th, this time we put in some dye, it stayed cold until today July 27th and has gone warm again.
I had a look under the hood and notice a split in the large rubber covered braded A/C hose near the timing cover and Power steering reservoir and some oil speck on the timing cover but could not see any dye, I'm taking it in again tomorrow to see what we can do, but from what I read it's pure luck if it gets sorted!
OK it was the large black hose that come from the back of the round unit, it was split but only leak when pushed to the side, or probly when braking and accelerating, the part from Chrysler was $93 CAD they didnt have one and did not know when they cpuld get one, apc pats could get one in 3 days for $118 CAD, my mechanic ordered that, but aint showed up yet, hopefully this week.
Anyways this hose, no wonder it splits, its very tight, it could do with being a little about 3/4inch longer.

2006 PT cruiser..base. AC blowing hot. Dont know how long its been like this (not my car). Clutch wasnt engaging. No blown fuse. Took it to a shop, and it is multiple problems. LP switch not working right (works when jumped out). Freon was low..no known leaks. Turns out...there is a relief valve in the system. When the discharge check valve leaks back to the suction,(the pressure gage would go from 60 to 120 instantly as the clutch engaged) it opens that relief. This discharges refrigerant (apparently) to the atmosphere...accounting for the loss of refrigerant. So they want to replace the compressor. They also said the orifice tube is part of the liquid line..and that it comes as an assembly with the dryer. I dont think that is true..cause I found seperate components online.
So if I order the parts..I need to know the compressor type (which I dont) and what seals to order with it. It is a five speed. I noticed that most parts say for automatics. Any other input on the parts? Thanks!

My PT Cruiser is a 2003 with almost 57,000 miles. When you start out the a/c works, blows on all fan levels and very cold. This week it has started this thing of working for 30-40 minutes and then the air begins to diminish, almost like the vents are closing inside the unit. You can still hear the blower, and there is still cold air in the vents, it just doesn't come out. If we turn the car off it comes back on working? Any ideas or suggestions? Could it be a sensor?
YOUR SYSTEM IS FREEZING THE EVAPORATOR CORE INTO A SOLID BLOCK OF ICE .IT IS PROBABLY LOW ON REFRIGERENT OR IS NOT CUCLEING OUT.GOOD LUCK

What did your problem turn out to be?

Well, a year later & the A/C still is a PITA. I tried one of those fancy-dancy recharge bottle of freon & a gauge (actually R134) plugged in and the pressure coming out seemed fine... I watched it cycle on & off a few times and the pressure seemed to be where it should be. The coolint is still anemic. I drove up to Marysville (Ca) for the Peach Festival and the open window did a better job than the A/C. Air flow is fine- form a trickle to a blast just not (very) cold.

Still get 23 mpg hiway, 20 city & I'm no speed freak.

i have a 05 pt cruiser convertible and my a/c does not work. this is the 3rd trip to the dealership, the first time they said it was the a/c compressor and just the part was over $600 and then they charged over $400 for labor and the next day the air DID NOT WORK!! so i took it back and they checked it out and said i had a restriction in the a/c(orphis) line and they ordered that part and charged $160 for part and labor drove it maybe 30 minutes and noticed the air was warm turned around and went back to the dealership and they have had it all day and can not figure out what is causing it to loose the coolant they said they hope maybe tomorrow they can figure out what is going on(i would like to have my car back especially since i did not get a loaner to use). does anyone have any ideas what is causing this? thanks

With A/C on, car stutters and A/C goes warm. Rad. Fan relay is good and wires are connected to fan relays and fans do come on. Low on freon? Low Pressure port is on top of passenger wheel well, correct?

Yep, that little dingus with the two wires coming out of the top actually screws on to the 'bicycle tire valve' stem.

Last summer, at the beginning of the cooling season, my the A/C in my 2006 PT Cruiser was not working. The mechanic found that one of the refrigerant lines was being chewed up by the radiator fan after I had hit a concrete parking stop and damaged the ground effect panel under the front bumper. It's a poor design.

Hi Debrah. My 2005 PT Cruiser A/C just went out last Friday (Feb 15, 2008). I checked the fuses and they are all OK. I need to check the Relay...it might be bad. I have 76K miles on my PT. Hold off on taking yours to the shop. I have a feeling itÂ’s the relay. I will let you know and walk you through it :-)
P.S. Your post sounds insane. Do not let anyone take your dash apart!

I'm back! Hi Debrah, I checked all fuses (2) and the relay (1 main). They are all working. OK, so I took it in to the dealer today on (3-31-08). They did a diagnostic check and discovered the Freon was low. Next, they put in a can of leak detector. No Leaks. Lastly, they filled the A/C unit with Freon. My car is a 2005 and about 79k miles. It was under $400.00. Looks like the labor was $300.00. In reality it was a good deal.

I did all that and more. I live in Florida during the winter and have a mechanic there that has tried 3 times and that was after I had been to 2 other mechanics. They get it blowing cold again and within 2-3 wks, I am back to sweating my, well you get the picture. I am so frustated now I don't know what to do. I am back home in Tennessee and have to find someone to fix this problem.I have a 2004PT with 70K on it. I love the car, but this A/C is a real drag. I have replaced the "O" rings, the switch (??) and God knows what else, and everytime it is "fixed"...it is temporary!

Your problem is the same as mine. I wish I had an answer for you. I came here looking for one. I have had my care to five different mechanics and ones that I can really trust and no one is able to fix the problem for more than 2-3 weeks and then I am blowing cold again. The last time, my freon was full and it was that the "switch" (???) was stuck? I am so frustrated and it is getting hot here in Tennessee!

My PT Cruiser is 2003 with 53,378 miles. We have had a new dryer a new compressor, the lines have been checked, it has a new power switch, it has been re-charged at least 4 times -- still doesn't work at all. It is also making a loud noise. Any help would be much appreciated.
My story exactly! I was hoping for some answers but I don't think I am going to find them here. Don't know what to do. I have been to 5 different mechanics only to end up just like you.

My pt cruiser will not hold freon , my mechacanic put a gadget on ,and the light turned red around the hoses ,but when he got near the compressor 2 lights came on.He put the gadget in the inside vents and 4 lights came on he said it was the evaporator core , does that sound right ,as that will be expensive!!!

You folks out there with PT Cruiser A/C problems listen up... The cooling fans are an ongoing problem and I know when you spend $300 for a fan motor assembly,($600 for turbo model), go ahead and get the relays also. There is one low speed relay and one high speed relay under the hood behind battery. The ac low side pressure sensor will turn the compressor off when freon charge drops too low to protect compressor. The high side pressure swith on the compressor will enable low fan speed as soon as you turn ac on. High side ac compressor switch will also disable the system when the freon pressure goes too high >400 psi. Dont let a clogged variable orfice valve back in service.. replace the liquid line as an assembly and also change out the condensor. I wish it wasn't all about money all the time.
