I have a 2001, 65,000 miles.
My A/C went out and the quote I got to repair it is $700+. Seems whatever the problem is requires the entire dash and steering wheel to come off to reach.
Not likeing this.

My PT Cruiser is a 2003 with almost 57,000 miles. When you start out the a/c works, blows on all fan levels and very cold. This week it has started this thing of working for 30-40 minutes and then the air begins to diminish, almost like the vents are closing inside the unit. You can still hear the blower, and there is still cold air in the vents, it just doesn't come out. If we turn the car off it comes back on working? Any ideas or suggestions? Could it be a sensor?

My PT Cruiser is 2003 with 53,378 miles. We have had a new dryer a new compressor, the lines have been checked, it has a new power switch, it has been re-charged at least 4 times -- still doesn't work at all. It is also making a loud noise. Any help would be much appreciated.

My PT Cruiser is 2005 with 23,000. AC just stopped working. Hope it just needs freon(??) or whatever it takes. It's super hot out West.
Will the dealer's 3-year warranty cover the AC??

Hi Debrah. My 2005 PT Cruiser A/C just went out last Friday (Feb 15, 2008). I checked the fuses and they are all OK. I need to check the Relay...it might be bad. I have 76K miles on my PT. Hold off on taking yours to the shop. I have a feeling itís the relay. I will let you know and walk you through it :-)
P.S. Your post sounds insane. Do not let anyone take your dash apart!

I'm back! Hi Debrah, I checked all fuses (2) and the relay (1 main). They are all working. OK, so I took it in to the dealer today on (3-31-08). They did a diagnostic check and discovered the Freon was low. Next, they put in a can of leak detector. No Leaks. Lastly, they filled the A/C unit with Freon. My car is a 2005 and about 79k miles. It was under $400.00. Looks like the labor was $300.00. In reality it was a good deal.

Hi Debrah & Folks. In reality, you should not loose Freon from your A/C esp. when a vehicle is a 2005. Guess what? About 2 days later I heard the Freon Leek. It came from the large rubber A/C hose. Actually, from one of the ends (Metal Part) near the power steering reservoir/fill.

Anyhow they compíd the Freon & some labor. Anyhow, I would say the total for the A/C deal including what I said from 3-31-08 was around $800.00 Expensive, Yes. But, I have to have A/C. Also, it appears that this was a fluke thing.

Hello All! I have a 2002 Dream Cruiser and everything has been wonderful - until today. My baby only has 18,000 miles - he's very spoiled. Anyway, for the first time this season it got hot enough to turn on the air. Well guess what? It blows and sounds fine but it does not get cold. Any comments, suggestions, or ideas would be greatly appreciated.:) Thanks!

Unless the evaporator core was the problem. Chrysler had a lot of problems with evap. cores and you will have to take the dash out to repair the situation.

Had the same problem, found if you turned the ac button off for 10 minutes, it would blow cold, now with 36K miles. yesterday it died. Blows, not cold and the clutch does not seem to engage. Does this mean a new pump/clutch assembly?????

<quoted text>
I had the symptoms similar

1) Works fine when first started
2) Between 30-40 minutes later, velocity of air from vents would slow down and almost stop
3) If you looked at the vents just prior to the loss of air flow, there would be a little fog coming out
4) If you shut off the a/c and waited a bit, it would blow again
5) You can hear the fan turning but just no air - what air does come out, is cold
6) If you look under the car after it sits for awhile, there is a LOT of water (condensate)

For my case, it was easily fixed - there is a pressure sensor/switch on top of the accumulator. It stays stuck which means the compressor runs continuously and moisture freezes on the coils/fins of the evaporator so air cannot flow over them. The compressor has to cycle otherwise it will eventually be damaged.

Anyway, the sensor/switch cost $35 plus tax at the dealer. Easy to replace, just be careful with the o-ring and make sure it is in the groove and not on one of the threads.

I have a PT Cruiser 2003 and the Compressor seems to be cycling on and off, but when I am driving in a highway it is fine. The problem is when I stop in a light, or a stop sign. It is continuously on and off (3 sec on, and 8 sec off). Also, when it turns on the revolutions go down, when it turns off it go to normal.
I bought freon, and it was a little bit down 45 psi, so I put some freon in, but as the system was on and off the pressure began to vary. When it was up (150 psi), then down to 48 psi I stopped.
Why I should do? I was at two mechanics, one of them told me that the problem is the expansion valve, and the second one told me that it is some electrical problem, some one could help me to solve my problem?
Thanks

You should of been credited for the first repair as they should have been able to find the leak the first time around if checked properly.

OK, Here's my tale of woe: When I'm on the highway the A/C is ok- never was very strong from the git go, but with 90K on my 2005, the A/C is really weak driving around town (which is my daily commute) not much better than the vent! Does that sound like jes' low freon or could there be somthing else going on?

(So far replaced both front wheel bearings (50K & 80K),wheel alignment, and rear shocks (80K+) and a couple sets of tires so far... not as bad as some... but those Honda's and Subaroo's are lookin' better every repair bill)

i have a 05 pt cruiser convertible and my a/c does not work. this is the 3rd trip to the dealership, the first time they said it was the a/c compressor and just the part was over $600 and then they charged over $400 for labor and the next day the air DID NOT WORK!! so i took it back and they checked it out and said i had a restriction in the a/c(orphis) line and they ordered that part and charged $160 for part and labor drove it maybe 30 minutes and noticed the air was warm turned around and went back to the dealership and they have had it all day and can not figure out what is causing it to loose the coolant they said they hope maybe tomorrow they can figure out what is going on(i would like to have my car back especially since i did not get a loaner to use). does anyone have any ideas what is causing this? thanks

Wow real surprised to see all these pt cruiser A/C faults, I have a 2005 2.4 Turbo, last week the A/C stopped, took to a decent guy who checked the system and could not find a leak, he recharge the system, all was great worked cold for 1 day, the back to warm, took it back again last Friday July 24th, this time we put in some dye, it stayed cold until today July 27th and has gone warm again.
I had a look under the hood and notice a split in the large rubber covered braded A/C hose near the timing cover and Power steering reservoir and some oil speck on the timing cover but could not see any dye, I'm taking it in again tomorrow to see what we can do, but from what I read it's pure luck if it gets sorted!
