I have a 2001 Cruiser and am having problems with the power steering pump. Noisy-sounds like fluid is low or out. Fluid level is fine-but mechanic says there is air in the fluid! No visible leaks of fluid on garage floor or pump. Any similar issues out there?

I have the same problem, an d have heard it from other PTs as well as various chrystler products. It's not life threatening, don't bother replacing the pump if you don't have a loss of power, I would say try a power steering flush, or you could try putting two ounces of sea foam (transmission and hydrolic conditioner not the engine cleaner) in the resivuar. I will not figure out what this problem is because I am having the pump replaced during a head gasket repair.

Same problem... except I've "smoked" 4 pumps and 4 racks!!!! The shop keeps putting new ones in and they just keep failing? It just happened again today now I'm bringing it back for the 5TH TIME... They are telling me it's defective pumps?

Any suggestions

I have a 2001 PT. I have this whining also.I was told to remove the fluid from the reservoir and replace it with the "Lucus Power Steering Fluid", which is a very thick substance. Afterwards, the power steering pump won't work. When I crank the vehicle up, the hose from the power steering reservior colapes and fluid sometimes comes out the reservoir cap, not thru the pin hole on top, but from under the cap. Please advise.....

Do not use power steering fluid. Chrysler now recommends ATF 4 transmission fluid. You must drain entire system including the rack and pinion.I used Valvoline synthetic ATF 4,same as I use in my automatic transmission, no more problems.

yes i had a 01 pt that had a filter in the resivoir clogged up and causing the fluid to airate on the supply side of the pump. if u run the vehicle and there are
no signs of leaks u might try changing the resivoir.

I had this issue a few days ago with my 01 pt when I made a real tight turn and heard a pop. Then heard this horrible sound as if it was out of power steering fluid. got home I saw a large of amount of power steering fluid on the under carriage of my car and on the ground. I figured it was the high pressure power steering line and took it to the dealer to get replaced. It ran $305 for labor and part ($105 for the line). So far no leaks...so look into the high presser power steering line/hose being the problem.

I have an 01 which blew the high pressure hose. I replaced the hose and pump with parts from advance auto. It began to make a loud whining noise like a screaming monkey,I could see air bubbles in the fluid. No external leaks. While attempting to bleed the system with the wheels off the ground the hose blew again. Again I replaced the pump and hose and took the car to my local Chrysler dealership for a flush and vacuum which didn't help at all. They said the steering rack is defective. Well the steering rack was just replaced and it blew an upper seal while attempting to bleed out the air. Now they say the Reservoir should be replaced. I don't have much choice but to replace it as well along with another steering rack.Has anyone had this much difficultly with their power steering sysyem? I'll post the results in a few days if the Reservoir fixed the problem.

YES, the new reservoir fixed it. No more screaming monkey and blowing hoses. The mechanic said the screen mesh filter in the bottom was clogged and starving the pump of fluid thus not allowing air in the system to be purged. This created a high pressure that resulted in blowing out the hoses and steering rack seal. He also said this filter is impossible to clean and you have to replace with a new reservoir. A $78 dollar part ended up costing me over $700. I hope this information helps somebody else avoid a costly repair such as this.

My wife has a 01 Cruiser, she complained about some whining sounds a few days ago, last night on her way home from work she complained about not having any power steering. I check it out, fluid level looks good, no leaks but no power steering. I need some advice/help! Thanks, Biggie

Does anybody have any tips on replacing the power steering high pressure hose. It sounds like I should also replace the reservoir as well.

I remember having to remove the front grill. Then disconnect the upper radiator hose and tilt the radiator forward enough to remove the electric cooling fan. This should give you enough room to remove the hose fitting at the pump. You will have to raise the front of the car and crawl on your back to remove the fitting at the steering rack or if you have long arms you might be able to reach it going straight down between the engine and firewall without lifting the car. I hope this helps. I have since sold my 01 PT with 110k miles. It was a neat looking car, but to be honest I was just tired of spending money and time working on it.

Thanks PT. Now I can't get the electrical connector to the fan, separated. I thought I knew how but nothing seems to work and I don't want to break it.

There should be a red slider lock that slides to the right to unlock. Then lift/pry up on a U shaped clip and then pull to separate the connector.

I finally got it. I had to use a careful application of pliers to get the red lock to move and to separate the two halves. I just couldn't get enough grip by hand. Getting old I guess. Thanks a lot.
