I have a 1998 Century Limited with only 42,000 miles and we have to have the intake manifold gasket replaced. The coolant tnak is all gummed up where the oil is in the coolant and coolant is in the oil. Iwas just changing oil and checking fluid levels and I found the gummy mess in the coolant tank. Estimated $800.00 to repair and clean the coolant system.

i am going to tell you right now you cant just do the intake gasket.. i did it about a month ago and now my head gasket is leaking.. i read somthing on here were somone else did just the intake and then they had the same thing happen.. and i was worried about that when i just did the intake,, so take my word don't just let them do the intake.. while they have it apart they should put the new head gaskets on there.. its logic believe me.. when you take it in you are not going to settle for just the intake gasket.. this really sucks...

I also have a 1998 Deville,it is very pretty but what good is it with a leaking head gasket that has caused hydra-lock,,it will not even turn over. The mechanics in town and the local salvage yards all know that any Deville made in the last ten or twelve years has a very problem-prone engine,,,Devilles are all over the place,,the interior and body is so pretty I hate to junk it but the price of a head gasket repair and the tendency for it to leak again makes me think I should just dump it.That is a shame, the car had a sticker of $39,000.So 114,000 miles outof a 39 thousand dollar car,,gee ain't American engineering grand?!?Cadillac should make good on this crap engine.
Did you change your mind about being able to fix the gasket so that it will not leak?

I've been in the automotive field for over 30 years and have repaired lots of these engines, I'm going to put something on here that a lot of folks are going to love.
If you have paid for or have an intake gasket problem with your GM from 1995 - 2004 with 3.1, 3.4, 3.8 or the 4.3 then be it known that GM has bellied up and all the information can be found here, enjoy!
Please read all the data, it contains year make and models effected.

This is quite a long post, so hopefully I'm not repeating too much. My 98 Park Avenue began overheating soon after I bought it with 39,000 miles. I'm sure that's why it was sold. Anyway, if you have a car with this problem, and want to fix it yourself, you'll probably end up doing something similar to what I did. Once I pulled the upper intake, the lower is really not much more work to pull. Then once you get the lower off, you might as well pull the heads and have them checked. I got an aftermarket upper intake, and purchased a used lower intake off of Ebay. The newer style lower intake has a smaller diameter egr pipe which feeds into the upper intake. This allows some airflow/space between the pipe and the edges of the hole it goes into. The "kit" for the epoxy and pipe to replace the pipe is about $70. The used intake with smaller diameter egr pipe was $20 used + shipping. My heads were warped and I had them resurfaced. GM has a new lower intake gasket for these engines that has an ALUMINUM frame. If you use the aftermarket direct replacements(that are made of plastic), you've performed a temporary fix. GM would not admit a problem with the gaskets for years, but they did manage to upgrade THIERS. About $600 with my labor since I used irridium plugs, new wires, synthetic oil, etc.

Replaced the engine in my 1997 Malibu 2 yrs ago to the tune of $4700. If there is any way of being reimbursed some of this from GM (lawsuit / recalls whatever) I would really appreciate knowing about it!
thanks!

I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier with only 29000Km but he start coming apart last fall. First, it was the front brakes rotors for the third time (previoussely 2 times under warranty) then the rear suspension (both shock absorbers gone) and surprise, this morning, the right side front coil spring break apart ruining the strut mount and the Mac Pherson strut completly. Fortunatly, I mas driving in town under 40 Kph. I´m scared to see what will be next to break cause this car is only 29000Km. old and well maintained. I should have listen to my brother and buy a Toyota instead of this garbage. G.M. Never Again for me.

If you bought the car new go to the dealership and ask for the service manager. Ask him for a goodwill warranty. I have seen it done a million times on cars with less than 70k miles.
