I have always had a fondness for bench seats. I think they are more useful. I believe their demise, was due to an intentional focus on selling more SUV's and mini vans thru out the industry. Many people with wagons and full size cars could get by without having to shell out the extra expense of a bigger vehicle than they really needed. The cost of ownership was much lower and fuel economy was better because they were lighter and being cars, sat much lower to the ground had much less wind to push through. Have practical useful seating in cars made it harder for many to justify stepping up, so they eliminated them, claiming people wanted sportier buckets seating with better bolstering. Eventually you were forced into buying a truck if you wanted a bench seat. Too bad, I miss them, and will always have a place in my heart for the functionality of the bench seat that maximized the usefulness of my cabs.
