There is a silent warranty for 2002/2003 5speed automatics (extends factory warranty to 8 years). There was a defect where they are not lubricating themselves properly (800,000 affected).
Call Honda directly if the dealer does not tell you about it.
Aside: Honda should have recalled them but they said it would cost $6 Billion to replace them all so they copped out and used a silent warranty (silent = without notifying owners). We should not accept this type of policy - write to Honda and complain.
Actually Honda did recall these cars, inlcuding mine. The dealer:(a) determined whether the problem had actually damaged the unit using camera-scope; (b) installed a fix to the lubrication system; and (c) extended the warranty on this component. While it may true that Honda did not issue a recall to blindly replace all the transmissions whether damaged or not one could hardly describe this episode as "silent."

Purchased a 2006 Pilot on June 10th. Was unable to drive before purchase as they had to bring it from another dealership and then had titled it to me before giving me the keys. As we drove out of the dealership we noticed a noise that sounded like a tractor trailer bearing down on us but there was no truck around. The next day my husband noticed a noise and we took it back to the dealer ship and they said "No problem" . My husband has ascertained that when driving in 1500-1800 RPMs we get a loud vibration like a resonance tendancy. The Honda dealership has now heard it (said it sounded like a helicopter) but can't fix it. They first replaced the rear ball bearings. Now they don't know what to do and I have a defective "NEW" car. Have any of you noticed a really loud noise? It builds to a very loud noise and then cuts out when you increase the RPMs.
Susan, Have you been able to solve this problem? We purchased a 2007 Honda Pilot a week ago and we have the same problem. A low frequency noise at 1500rpm to 1800rpm independent of vehicle speed. We noticed the noise louder when pulling our camper. We have yet to take to the dealer, but I think it is a natural frequency problem with the exhaust system. When the vehicle is under higher loads (pulling a trailer), increased amounts of exhaust is causing the louder noise. While pulling the trailer we could hear it in multiple gears.

Has anyone experienced blinking of the drive light on the transmission indicator? Sometimes wuile driving the vehicle, the "D",will begin to blink. Once I stop the car and turn off the vehicle and restart, the blinking stops. Later while moving it will come back on.

I have a 2006 EX with vehicle stability assist. This system will shut down the vehicle on left turns downhill every time. it has never functioned on a right turn, only lefts. The dealer says to shut it off when making left turns, which is a poor answer at best. They have replaced all the wheel sensors with no help for the problem, Anyone else having this type of problem?

We have an 2006 Pilot EXL AWD and have noticed that the engine rpms goes up to 3500 before the auto transmission shifts. The engine is pretty noisy at that level. The dealer tells us that this is normal, "it is a heavy vehicle". Everyone who rides in it says it shouldn't be like that.
I need some input from other Honda Pilot owners.
I owned a 2003 Pilot, and now have an 06 Pilot, They changed the shift points so the engine does rev up much higher than previous. I liked ythe 2003 much better,

I had the blink "D" after my 75k service. I looked in the Pilot manual and it said that if it blinks, there is concern about the transmission. Take it to the dealer. Well, when I turned off the car and came back to it later, the light did not blink. Later in the week, I traveled 1000 miles to Colorado from Texas and the light started blinking west of Denver in a 6% grade declining I-70. I was thinking, crap, I should have taken it in. Well, I stopped for caffeine and when I turned the Pilot back on, the "D" light was not blinking...whew. I completed my trip back to Texas with out incident and the "D" light has not come back on.
Side note:
Pilot is experience slight hesitation while cruising. Mechanic said it could be from bad gas and the intake manifold was getting clogged. he cleaned it out and it slightly improved the hesitation. I was impressed with the 20-23 mpg on the trip.
My 1994 Accord is doing the same thing. Did you ever find out what it was?

I had the same problem. I believe is for boosting someone with my battery .its not built to hold with the same strength anymore.

You should try buying an American car for once. Do you think your Honda is so reliable now? This goes to show you don't trust what consumer reports says. I have a 10 year old American car that has not had the kinds of major transmission problems you are describing.

Have a 2004 Honda Pilot (purchased August 2004) and battery went completely dead..thought batteries should last longer? My 1992 and 2002 Honda Accord batteries lasted much longer. Replaced the Pilot's battery with new battery from local auto parts store and it seems OK for now. We will see...

I have a 2005 Pilot (I live in the Middle East) and it seems to me that the torque when in 1st gear is quite high and the car seems to jump forward. However, I have driven many Japanese SUV's and they all seem to do the same. I have also driven a few American SUV's (GMC, FORD ...) and they don't. I found the Pilot wonderful to drive and probably the only SUV that handles like a car on the road (Well, it is a front wheel drive other than when the VTM kicks in). Over all an amazing SUV and quite good off road especially on sand.

Break lamp indicator on a '03 Pilot came on and the break lights don't work, all other lights work ok. What causes the indicator to come on? over the phone the service rep said its probably burned out bulbs. I cant believe the indicator would only come on when all three lights were out.

I have clients whose Pilot refused to budge today after they simultaneously took the key from the ignition, opened the tailgate and opened a rear passenger door. It appears to be disabled and will not start. Any ideas?

RERENCE HONDA NEWS AUGUST 2006 THEY MENTION A SIMULAR PROBLEM. THEY STATE THE ACCESSORY POWER SOCKET ON THE VEHICLE HAS A CENTER TIP THAT STICKS UP TO A POINT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SOCKET AND WHEN YOU PLUG IN A ACCESSORY ( CELL PHONE CHARGER FOR EXAMPLE) IT WILL GROUND AND BLOW THE FUSE. THE SUGGESTED FIX IS TO REPLACE THE SOCKET (PART-NO. 39624-SZ3-L01). THIS NEW SOCKET HAS A RECESSED CENTER TIP THAT PREVENTS THE THE ADAPTER FROM SHORTING WHEN PLUGGED IN. DO NOTE HOWEVER THE PILOT IS NOT MENTIONED IN THE ARTICLE BUT THE COMPLAINT IS THE SAME. GOOD LUCK.

Kim,
Your RADIO CODE should be on a separate shet you received from the dealer when you bought the Pilot. My radio code was on the "Pre-Delivery Inpection Checklist--Trucks" sheet. Simply type in the five-digit code into your radio using your station buttons numbered 1 thru 6. Note that you only get so many chances to enter your code. If you enter wrong codes your radio will display "ErrE" and it will not accept any more codes. You will then need to disconnect your battery, wait a few minutes and then the RADIO CODE wording will display again and you can start over and key in your code.
Also worth mentioning...another option if you do not have the card with the code is to retrieve the serial number electronically. Then you can call any Honda dealer with the serial number from the radio and they should supply the code. worth noting when putting the code in..you press and hold each pre-set button for one second. This insures the radio has accecepted the code. Now to retreive the serial number. Turn on the stereo so the word code or error appears on the screen...with the the ignition still on ( but vehicle not running)..turn off the stereo...press and hold the #1 and #6 preset buttons then turn the radio back on (I know...kind of a trick) at this point the radio should display a U and 4 digits then a L and 4 digits. When calling the dealer..just tell them the numbers that were displayed and all should be well again. Good luck.

Day of purchase! Flashing "D" on the way home. Two days later dealer announced 4th gear pressure switch. Question, I've read the blogs no long term follow up on this issue, is this a future transmission change or fluke?

I have had the same problem. The dealer said it is the phone charger and he ses it with Verizon chargers the generic ones don't seem to do it. I had the fuse changed at the dealer and I have had no problems since. If I need to use the charger I use the back one so as not to blow the radio.
