Ok! I have a 96 S10 pickup 4x2 with similar issues. Still am trying to figure out what the problem is. It just won't change off first gear most of the time. I am forced to drive on first gear.:) Well, please don't try that! Not safe or economical!!And sometimes I get lucky and it does change gears but, after it seats for let's say a day(specially in winter)we're back to square one. Also my ABS light would go on on the instrument cluster, also my speedometer stops working when this happens. Well, for sure I know that my tranny needs work but that does not explain my issue. I am speculating it has to be either a speed sensor, or solenoid, or computer. Not sure which one of the three. Remember these vehicles come with the 4L60e(electronically controlled trannies) so, if any electronics are bad, you're in trouble. But at the end, an experienced technician would be able to conclude what exactly is the problem. I simply do not know enough about the electrical system or the 4l60e automatic transmission of this vehicle. I just have to do a little research.
Also, I have a rebuilt 4x4 4L60e automatic transmission complete with converter that I bought originally for my blazer which I sold before I installed the tranny. I have no use for it now so if anyone needs a good 4L60e they can contact me at ( my76blazer101@yahoo.com ) I also have some transfer cases and front differentials for these cars.
well if your speedometer stops reading when you are having your shift problem it is your speed sensor you can disconect from the tranny and you should be able to select 1st and 2nd gear it wont shift but will help you pinpoint the problem and they cost around $150.00. makes you feel better mine wont go into drive only second gear and third gear. i went through all the test internal wiring harness and external and replaced the selenoids and still does the same stuff.

I just went through a similar problem with a '95 Chevy full-size truck. Lost my tachometer, realized a notable "slam" into gear when going from park into drive, and was stuck with 2nd or 3rd gear, wouldn't shift, overdrive gone. Then I lost my speedometer also.
I googled for a solution, and I can say the ignition switch cable solved it. I took mine apart and found out there is a nylon cam inside (which turns when the key does) and comes in contact with a LOT of springed contacts. I assume the cam wears out over time, thus the problem.
I was gambling on trusting the internet sources, but it saved a lot of headaches this time.
I agree. my roomate is an ase mechanic and he tested my 97 k1500 for the same problem. tach dropping and not shifting right etc... the code came up that the shift solinoids were messed up. there are two possible solutions. a short in the ignition switch, it could be any of the wires coming into the switch or it could be your gauge cluster if there is s short or malfunction in the tach it could aslo cause all the same problems... theres chevys are all electronically controlled and unlike older chevys of the same model and transmission it will not shift if the electronics are not working properly even a drop of a volt or less could be cousing this problem. gotta love all this electrical bullshit

I have a 97 4wd 4.3L Blazer. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a sound, like a humming when starting the car, my water pump went out, thought that was the problem. But the car still has the loud hum to it. Lounder at start then it goes dull after driving for awhile.( But can still hear it just barely)Stopped my shop yesterday, he said that he couldnt pinpoint it. The only thing he could guess was it was coming from the transmission. But couldnt tell me anymore tell it got worse. The car still shifts alright and have had no problems with it acting up. I drive about 2 hrs daily so I wondering as anyone ever had this happen to you? It is the transmission or could it be something else? I dont wish to get stuck so far away from home~

I would say you have a bad transmission I have a 95 blazer and I was driving around and stoped to talk to one of my buddys and when I started it back up it would not shift out of 2nd gear, we hooked it up to a computer and it said nothing so now I need to get a trans.

Tonight as we pulled out of a parking lot our blinkers would not work. We got home and pulled in front to unload but when he tried to park it in the garage it would not go out of park. What is going on.. Its strange that are blinkers would go and now it wont go out of park.

1996 Blazer 165K miles, 4 door, auto, 6 cyl. 4WD works fine. My problem is as I'm driving in Overdrive, as I start to climb any incline (even a small one) I can feel the tranny wanting to downshift but it won't unless I give it some gas or manually downshift. It just sort of vibrates or slips but never makes the change without my help. Sorry, kind of hard to describe. Fluids are ok. I have a daughter in college so I need to figure out if this may be a major expense or if it may be a simple fix and I can milk it for a few more years (after graduation) Thanks for your help.

I have a 98 2 door automatic 4x4. My transmission is shot and I am looking to put a new 4L60E into it. Will any 4L60E work, say from a S10 pickup, or does it need to come from a blazer as well?

96 blazer/ 235k/ transmission serviced 4-yrs ago.
Ran blazer for 2-days after engine light on. Felt slight slip before entering Interstate. Lost all power after going 3-miles. No gear would engage. Fluid clear/no metal particles/ no burnt smell.
Car towed. After cooling down I was able to put transmission into "Drive" and move 30 ft into garage. I start the car once-a-week and will go into gear. Going to Auto Zone for diagnostic tester. Great car// Any suggestions??? tks

I have a 95 jimmy and the tranny would slip into neutral when giving it gas. I would have to shift it back into drive again. One day when this occured I shifted back into drive and the tranny would not go into any gear. Makes kind of a whining noise now. Any ideas if it could be speed sensor, ignition switch/wiring, front pump, torque converter, or does it sound like it needs a rebuild?
