I have a 99 Malibu and had manifold gasket replaced ($500) and also have issue with first 2 fan speeds. I am replacing the resistor blower motor (~20) which I hear is the problem- from mechanics and others after doing that. Good luck to us with Malibus. P.s. I hear blinkers are next to go...

I have a 2002 Malibu. The turn signals and flashers do not turn off. Brought the car to the dealer and had the flasher unit replaced under the service letter. When I exited the lot, I immediately saw that this did NOT correct the problem. However, now the dealer wants me to pay for a diagnostic. GM tells me that the car is no longer under warentee and that there is nothing that they can do until I get and pay for the diagnosis. A review of some internet posts indicates that this is very common and the the fix involves replacing the multi-function switch (over $300 in parts and labor). Wonderful! GM cons the NHTSA into dropping the recall investigation by offering a free fix but the fix does nothing.
No wonder sales at Toyota are going up while those at GM are declining.

I know your pain Mario. I have a less serious but annoying problem with my '99 Malibu of the constant clicking sound of the hazard switch. I thought that unplugging the hazard switch to stop the clicking noise would fix the problem, but it turns out doing that completely shuts off my car's turn signals!!! What kind of stupid engineering is that by GM? I wouldn't mind not hearing any turn signal noise, but I NEED my freakin turn signals! And I have also been told that the fix is to replace the multifunction switch, which is +$300. I don't have the money to fix a ridiculous problem that seems to be nothing more than a money racket, so I'll just have to live with the clicking sound. I will never again get a GM car unless I get one free... even then I will have to think about it...

Own a 2002 Malibu which has gone through almost everything that has been posted. Fuel pump replaced because car wouldn't start, ignition switch replaced again because it wouldn't start, turn signal switch replaced because turn sigs. working whenever, battery replaced because it wouldn't start. The starting problem is the anti-theft device built into the car. All out of pocket repairs trying to keep the ____ thing running. Gasket leak on motor was the only thing covered at the time. Now the ABS light is staying on. May never buy a Chevy again.

Malibu 1998, Have problem with anti theft system. When trying to start the car the light comes on and blinks at the same time it cut off the fuel to the carburetor, have to wait for 15 minutes the indicator goes solid red and then I can start the car, this some times happen two or three times and the car can not be started for more than half an hour. Now the problem is getting very serious and the car can not be started at all. Any solution how to solve the problem or disconnect the anti theft wire to the carburetor fuel cut-off valve.

I know nothing at all about cars, but a lot of people told me that changing the multifunction switch involves ripping apart the steering column, which involves the air bag. That doesn't sound easy to me, but then again what do I know...

Lisa wrote: <quoted text> The rotors on the Malibu are cheap! I had mine turned/resurfaced at 23K, 35K, and got tired of the hassle and dealer telling me this is "normal", so I had rears resurfaced a 3rd time and replaced the fronts with frozen/cryogenic rotors and put Hawk HPS compound brake pads front & rear and haven't regretted the upgrade. The warping, squealing, vibrating is gone & car stops much faster too. I was having the same problem with my wifes rotors ended up replacing them 1 and the brake pads about twice a year for 3 years and fianly I checked the back breaks they were never adjusted in from the factory. Adjusted them and never had a problem afterwards.

That doesn't sound easy to me, but then again what do I know... The top plastic clamshell piece needs to be removed to access the switch that rests on top of the column. The steering wheel is not removed. Takes about 2 minutes to remove the 2 screws. The cover comes off easier if the steering column is tilted down to its lowest position. As I recall, a single screw holds the switch mechanism down. See a link to instructions and diagrams on forum page 60, post 1191. The whole task can be completed in under 15 minutes by a non-mechanic. Note that since one is working near the airbag, the battery cable should be removed to prevent even the slightest possibility of the bag going off.

Any one know how to fix this problem I have. The car is a slow starter. Sometimes I will try to start it and I have to stop and give it a second and try to start it again. Most of the time it will start, but not without a fight. Can anyone help? I changed the battery still same problem.

If `in his opinion' I qualified for a warranty replacement the switch would be free; if not it would add $80.00 to the diagnostic fee !!!! Went to my local wreckers and picked one up for $20.00 ; installed it at the wreckers in a few minutes.

I had the same problem and went to page 2-23 or 2-24 and it said hold the gas down to the floor and turn the key to start for about 13 seconds. This drains all the excess gas. It has worked for me. I noticed a huge difference in the way the car starts.
