My steering went kaput last night on my way home. Everything was fine until I reached my street which happens to be a hill. It was quite a snow storm so maybe the constant spinning did something to my steering. I checked my fluid and it seems to be fine. Any thoughts?
Hmmm...is this a test? Snow storm...hill...steering. Mmmmmm...slippery?:)

I have a 1998 Chevy Malibu v6 3.1L and am looking for a wiring diagram for the entire vehicle. Bought this thing used and it has more electrical problems then Hilary has wrinkles. Please, no Haynes/Chilton comments.

Also, I tried to replace the spark plugs in the same car and the front 3 were easy enough, but the back three, OMG. The first one on the left has something obstructing my socket so I can't get it onto the stupid thing, let alone how hard it is to get to them. Any advice?

GM Design Department has a mind block where the three rear spark plugs are concerned ! I have worked on several Chevrolete engines and each time had to disconnect the engine steady / anti torque bar; block the engine forward with a lever; take a thin wall plug socket ( which even then had to be thinned some more !) and work by feel.
GM Mechanic I spoke to figured on one or two engine plug changes per socket before they split because of how thin the wall has to be ground.

Is there a recall on 1999 Malibu for turn signal switch? I really don't want to pay $75+ to stop the continous turn signal clicking sound in the hazard switch. I already tried smashing the hazard switch with a flathead screwdriver but that didn't stop the clicking noise.

I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu, 52,000 miles..I was told recently I needed 1200 worth of work! my front struts are leaking, my front rotors need to be resurfaced or replaced with pads/my rear brakes need adjustment,I need 4 new tires ( tread is low)and i need to replace my tie rod..Im disappointed I only had my car 3 years, I brought it brand new, does this mean Im too hard on my car, or its just time for stuff to break down. yea and no warranty, go figuare..Are these prices reasonable

I'm curious to know if all these problem complaints are with the Malibu V6 models. It would be appreciated if you would state whether its the 4 cylinder or V6 model that is giving you problems. Thanks.

By the way is it normal to hear that noise only when you are turning a corner, backing out, or turning your wheels? thats about the time I hear that noise in the front of my car. Im not sure what it is..the struts?the tie-rod? how do you know???

I was starting to think it was me. I'm not the most mechanically minded guy on the planet, but, it seems, neither is GM. I've heard of undoing the motor mounts and prying the engine forward for some things, but just to change your spark plugs seems a tad ludicrous.

The thin walled spark plug socket is a good idea. Thanks, GMR. Now to either find one or make one. A machinist, I am not.

Anyone have any links or anything on the wiring diagrams for the entire 1998 Malibu v6 3.1L? Anything would be helpful at this point...what a nightmare.

If no one has links to the 1998 Malibu v6 3.1L wiring diagrams, maybe you can help me figure this out. My electrical problems are many. I wanted to tie them altogether and maybe find a common source that could point to a single culprit. Here's my list,(it is arranged by DEFINITE related problems, POSSIBLE related problems and certain apparent physical INDICATORS.

DEFINITE
========
- BATTERY DISCHARGES WHEN KEY IS OFF
- PARKING LIGHTS ON WITH KEY OFF,(INTERMITTENT)
- REAR WINDOW DEFROST, NOT WORKING
- WINDSHIELD WIPERS ONLY WORK WHILE HOLDING THE LEVER
- HEADLIGHTS ALWAYS ON WITH KEY ON

POSSIBLE
========
- ELECTRONIC LOCKING MECHANISM DOESN"T ALWAYS WORK
- PASSENGER SIDE ELECTRONIC WINDOW WILL NOT RAISING, BUT GOES DOWN

INDICATORS:
==========
- DASH UNSECURED
- DRIVER SIDE LOCK/WINDOW/MIRROR CONTROL PANEL UNSECURED
- AIRBAG LAMP ALWAYS ON
- THEFT LAMP ALWAYS ON

Hope someone can help me out. I'm almost at the point of putting in a switch to turn off the battery so it won't discharge overnight,(I have it disconnected when not in use now).

You can buy ` Thin wall plug sockets' at auto parts store; I ground mine down with a disc grinder, crude but effective !
Do remember to blow out rust and dirt before and during removal of plugs as the wrench will flake rust off the head as you turn it.( Scores the cylinder if it drops inside when you remove the plug.)

Heavy `clunk' at low speed and tight turn can be worn or seized ball joint; worn you find with a pry bar; seized, watch the bottom end of strut as someone turns the steering wheel.

Thanks again, GMR. Maybe a GM dealer may have one at the service center.??? I appreciate your help.

Any ideas on the electrical? I'm kinda lost without any wiring diagrams...

Don't know of an oxygen sensor in the gas tank; do you mean pressure / vacuum sensor ?

Battery discharging ; The computer should turn off auxiliaries after 20 or 30 minutes. Put an ammeter; or multimeter but check it's current capacity, between battery lead and battery. Only thing after 30 minutes should be clock / radio fraction of an amp.
WINDSHIELD WIPERS; check multi connector on switch; check switch continuity.
HEADLIGHTS; Coud be daylight running lights ( or Module )
PASSENGER SIDE ELECTRONIC WINDOW ; Had this on mine; caused by the switch in drivers door !

Hope this helps with some problems but can not think of a commom cause for all of them; except computer ! WD 40 on connector ?.

Gosh are you talking about me??? I've had all the problems mentioned on this site with my 2004 Malibu Maxx. I too will NEVER BUY from GM again.

Not only have I had problems with my brakes but also my steering column. By the time I had 100k on the car I'd put two complete sets of rotors and four sets of pad on that car. At 37k it developed a thump in the steering column and GM would not repair it. For the first time ever I replaced a steering column! Needless to say that worthless piece of junk no longer sits in my garage. I went back to Asian manufacturers and will never again return to GM!

I had this happen too. It was a release mechanism/sensor on hood that caused the problem.

I've had brake problems starting at 11,000 miles. Serviced at least ten times. Just put all new rotors on AGAIN at 97,000. GM is in total DENIAL.
Robert wrote:
My '04 Maxx has had the rotors turned for a 4th time in 65,000 miles. Chevy dealer and Chevy customer service line offer no solutions, only double-talk.
Brakes will pulsate in another 5,000 miles, guaranteed, and they'll turn the rotors again.
Enough is enough--it's recall time Chevrolet

Mike,
Had a similar leaking problem, put coolant in my 1999 Chevy Malibu about every other month. Just had it to the garage and after $1100 in repairs $700 for manifold gasket and of course another $300 for brake rotors which need to be replaced every other year due to a very poor design by GM. Sadly, I will likely not be buying another GM product as well
I had manifold gasket replaced ($500) and also have issue with first 2 fan speeds. I am replacing the resistor blower motor (~20) which I hear is the problem- from mechanics and others after doing that. Good luck to us with Malibus.
