I have a 99 Malibu and it has a "Check Engine Light" that is on most of the time regardless of what I do for service. It runs great and I change the oil regularily as well as the filters, and perform all the maintenance (even tried changing the gas Everytime I go to the dealer they charge me $500 dollars to basically reset the computer. Any suggestions?

I just finished reading all 102 posts on the forum, and the funny thing is, I have had all of the problems associated with all of the '99 Malibu posts. Here are some of my thoughts, along with a new problem for you all to ponder:

On the A/C unit intermittently working: I looked into this problem 2 years ago. I don't remember the specific details, but it has something to do with the contacts inside the unit itself. At one point, I found a pdf online with instructions about how to open it up and clean them. It was a simple fix once you got the unit out and opened up (not a simple task, of course). A patient google search can turn up more.

On the brake pulsation: I just had my brakes redone, with the rear ones "cleaned and dusted". I can tell they work better, but now I have the pulsing that I didn't have before the brake repair. Sounds like this is "normal" for Chevy, but I'll check those pins, as you suggested.

On the gas guage: I again had the same problem. I didn't know how much gas I actually had after about a 1/2 tank because the needle would move so much. I ended up getting it fixed when we had a case of bad gas in the area, and Ashland/Marathon picked up the tab for repairs (about $800).

And finally, on the check engine light: You are's usually just an O2 sensor. You can try to replace it yourself, go the dealer and pay them $200 to reset the computer, or find a local mechanic who will do it for about $80.

Now, my new problem: My left rear brake light doesn't come on. I've replaced the bulb three times (never blown, but just in case) and the fuse. The other two work just fine. The dealer got it to work once, saying it was a bent connector, which lasted about a week before it went out again. Anyone else have this problem?

2003 malibu ls..i have a problem with my front end chevy replaced strut mounts and strut bearings due to the bang when turning the wheel under 5 mph..noise is now worse and chevy's repairs cured problem for 2months at a time after every replacement. every mechanic thinks its inner tie rods but arent sure you see u have to take all that apart to be sure its cheaper to let it break to find out they said. now horn stopped working after sounding like a dead animal , i tried to replace horn now it doesn't work at all. i thought cars were supposed to be safer now?? i feel like i'm driving a deathtrap...any ideas on mechanical problems please HELP!!

I have a 2004 Malibu and am having these problems too! First they replaced my entire left front turn signal. Then my fuses kept blowing and now that my warranty is up my back right turning complex is bugging out on me!!! Ugh!

My 2004 Malibu LS continues to blow fuses for the turn signals and the horn. Love the car but I am tired of replacing the fuses.
Also, the steering column has a clicking noise in it when turning sharp as if the brakes are bad. Dealership hears the noise can't find any thing wrong. Electrical system must be bad on these cars. My daughter also has the same model and has the same problem.

I have the same problem with the A/C on my '99. The owners manual doesn't recommend using the internal setting for too long. Could be a safety issue with carbon monoxide build-up

I have not noticed any brake problems on my 04 malibu maxx, but the turn light on the left front kept burning out so the dealer installed a whole new light housing. Problemed solved. I have a problem with my steering, feels like a tie rod but they say they are fine. Any suggestions. I have 63000 km on the car thus far. Other than this love the car.

Hey Jim,
Turn your key once to the right, Leave it there till the theft system light stops blinking.
When it stops and stays lit, then try turning it on. That works for me. It usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes to till the light stops blinking.
There`s no need to unhook the battery. Too much hassle. I hope that works for you. Let me know.

I have a 2002 malibu and I've had several brake problems. I've turned or replaced the front rotors 4 different times. I also have the turn signal problems and I've tried to reconnect the hazard signal but still had no success. I am disgusted with Chevy and this car. It's no wonder that American car businesses are struggling. It's a sad state of affairs but I don't think I'll buy chevy any longer.

I have had problems with my rotors warping three months into owning my Malibu. I have had 5 new sets of rotors on the vehicle and the last set started warping 3 weeks after they were changed. Does anyone know if there is a recall or recourse for this costly defect?
In order to prevent "Brake Pulsation" your lugs have to be torqued to specs. Whenever your wheels are removed for service they MUST be tightened properly. Usually about 100 foot pounds of torque. This will eliminate your problem with rotors.

I have a 2005 Malibu Maxx Lt and I have had the turn signals light bulbs replaced in the front and rear driver side as well. I have had the car not start on me 2-3 times I lost track. The vehicle is still under warranty, but I have had a lot of problems. The car pulled to the right at approx 1000 miles and I had it alligned and it still pulls to the right at 32000 miles. I took it to the dealer 10-3-06 because the brakes were making noises and at 32000 miles I have to replace the rear brakes. The front brakes are fine. I feel that these vehicles are not operating with a safe braking system and I drive a lot and I am ready to get rid of the car for safety reasons, but I do like the vehicles purpose just not the quality in the breaking system.

My brakes are now going all the way to the floor even after replacing them. Why is this? THe fluid level is good the pads are good and the rotors as well. Any help?

My 01 Malibu has had a few issues mentioned previously on this board, but I have another one that I have not read about. I will be driving down the road and the engine and dashboard will suddenly shut down. The radio and air will still work, but the gas, speedometer, tach, & engine will shut off. Sometimes I can put in neutral and wait for the guages to come abck on and start, and sometimes I can't. It will also do this if I shut off the car for a while when shopping. Then, all of a sudden, the guages come back on and I can start it. Extremely frustrating. Any thoughts?

My 2000 malibu had a fuse in the box under the hood. I think it was # 34. There are also fuse boxes on either side of the dash that you can see when you open the doors.

My 2005 Chevy Malibu had a smell inside which had an odor similar to burning plastic. I noticed that both front turn signal/running lamp had melted the amber lense and also is causing damage to the reflector. To my knowledge the lamps have never been replaced. Has this happen to anyone else?

<quoted text> very little times will that keep the car from starting what you can try is to disconnect the battery for about five minutes hook it back up and that should get rid of the problem. If not its got to go to a shop to hook up a scan tool to reprogram the computer
I've had this problem in my 1999 chevy malibu. IT happens sporadically . After I try to start it, the
theft system light blinks and the car will not start.
It takes 8 minutes for the theft light to stop blinking before I can start the car. I'm thinking
I need to get the theft system disconnected.

I have a 2002 Malibu LS. Extended warranty just expried 10/1/06.

The issue I have is the AC/Heater blower only operates in high speed (speed 1-4 does not work, only on speed 5).

Would this be an issue with the switch or blower motor?

You will find it in the rear compartment fuse block. It is located in the trunk or rear of the Malibu Maxx (cargo area). Access the fuse block through the panel on the driverís side of the rear cargo area. Fuse #20.
