I have a clicking noise coming from under the hood at idle only. When the RPM's are raised the clicking/ticking stops until the motor returns to idle and it starts again. Anybody else have this problem or have a solution?

I hear the same thing. I think this is a double over head cam engine. I belive it to have 24 valves. I'm not suprised we hear some valve noise at idle. As soon as you step on the gas it tightens up and runs quiet.

I'm not sure that is it. Mine sounds like its coming from infront of the motor. Around the alternator or one of the pulleys on the driver side. The sound is more like a loud metal click not contained in or under something like a vavle cover. Can't figure it out.

Remove your serpentine belt and start the engine. Then you can isolate the noise to the engine/fan or something driven by the belt. With all the other noises stopped, maybe you can detect the source better. Careful of overheating running with the belt off.

I had a ticking noise in my 2002 Trailblazer that appeared to be coming from the engine. There was no rhyme or reason why it would tick, but I would usually hear it when idle. I brought it to the shop three times for them to see what was the cause-but naturally they would not hear it while there. Well, my extended warranty went out 2-22-07 and on 3-2-07 I started having problems with what I thought was my transmission. My check engine light came on and a reading of the code showed it was my fan clutch motor. The part has been changed (at my cost), and so far, I have not heard the ticking noise again. I hope that has solved my problem because it is quite annoying. Good Luck

My wife's 02 TB has a ticking noise coming more from under the dash. I think we figured it out last night though, seems to be one of the vent motors used when the heating system is set to defrost. Sounds like the vent is stuck causing the motor to created a clicking noise. When we set the controls to anything without defrost the clicking goes away.

Service Bulletin# 05-06-004. Unplug cooling fan clutch ( motor off ), start motor, check for clicking. If clicking goes away, it's the fan clutch. Fix is to take to GMC or Chevy dealer to have updated code programmed into PCM. When failing, the clicks are about 1 second apart, and do not change with engine speed. Just got my '02 Envoy reprogrammed yesterday.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM (2003 TB), ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON SHORTLY AFTER, I TOOK IT TO A DEALER AND THEY BASICALLY SAID IT WAS A BLOWN VALVE, FOR $200,($155 OF THAT BEING LABOR), THEY CORRECTED THE PROBLEM.
NO MORE TICKING, THEY EVEN REPLACED MY TAIL LIGHT BOARDS FOR FREE!!!!
I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE!!!

It is the fan clutch. There is a TSB bulletin about this clicking sound. You need to replace it with a newer GM or AC Delco fan clutch. Once its done, you need to go to the GM Service dealer to update the PCM on your vehicle.

TSB No.: 0810B TSB Date: January 01, 2004

NHTSA No.: 10005383

Failing Component:
Engine And Engine Cooling:Cooling System:Fan

Description of Summary:
Tick noise at idle.

My Envoy clicks and does not blow cold A/C air while parked.

Hope this works out for you guys!

Just had my 2003 GMC SLT in for the ticking noise at idle and it was just as Dave stated. cooling fan clutch, updated programing. $400 later the noise is gone. wish it was still under warrantee --as I'm the orig owner, 46k miles.

I just replaced my 2002 GMC Envoy SLT 4.2L fan clutch with an OEM clutch. The "jet engine" noise went away, but I have the ticking sound. It makes the noise at low speed and under low speed acceleration, and it is not any of the obvious = fan blades, pulleys, power steering, A/c, etc. I've read many forums, and am almost afraid to take it to the dealer, as they'll want to put a Delco part in.

Can someone help here?

Thanks in advance.

2003 Envoy, 120,000 miles, 6 cyl. New problem: At cold starts only, 5-6 rapid clicks coming from dash area, sounds like metal on plastic. Doesn't bother me much, but my wife is driving me crazy about it! Suggestions?

I have a 2000 Suburban w. 5.3 and get a ticking noise on the left side (drivers side) of the engine only. The other side (passenger side) is quiet. The truck drives fine, no smoke whatsoever and gets decent gas mileage. I recently got almost 500mi on a tank full of gas. When I look under the hood one of the spark plugs appears to be moving with the clicking noise. All of the other plugs aren't moving at all. Any ideas folks?

Took my 2003 Trailblazer in to fix the knocking or exhaust leak. I found out that the cover over the manifold had a nut missing and 2 others were very loose. A new nut and some tightened nuts fixed the problem. Now it is time to fix the knocking that happens inside the vehicle when I adjust the air or fan controls.

Are you still getting it? What was the fix? Mine still does it around the fan or air conditioning switch.

My Bad, one of my spark plugs needed to be tightened. It was working its way loose, but not enough to lose compression or give out any check engine codes. The ticking is gone, but I have another issue. It has a hard time starting when the engine is warm. It starts just fine when the engine is cold. Any clues?

Hello well we have a 2003 Chevy TB LTZ 2 toned with everything you need and then some recorder heated seats bose sound system & well we heard this ticking noise in my moms car for the past few days and my dad changed the engine oil this morning and it didnt seem to fix so while i was driving it with my friend the engine blew. It turns out there was a defective cylinder wiht a recall and all they did was extend the warranty on 2002-2004 tb's to 7 years or 100000 miles well we do a lot of driving and were at 110000 and it happened.
They arent covering it because its there fault and we have to pay 5000 for a new engine and everything to be put in not including labor and to have it put it thats just to buy it. So if you hear it i would ask about it being a cylinder or something like that.
