I started having problems with the fuel gauge swinging between full and empty then got an error code that shows a problem with the upper level fuel sensor. I've been told that I need an whole new fuel pump assembly and that the fuel tank will have to be dropped to replace it. I've been just setting the trip meter and filling it up every 250 miles because the fuel gauge now just stays lit on empty all the time. I don't have any problems with it running, starting, etc. so I'm assuming that it's just the sensor that is out. Does anyone know if I have to drop the tank to replace the entire assembly or if there is a less invasive fix?

Hi Tim,
I have a 2006 Trailblazer that just started doing the same. I did some research on the internet and looks like this is a common Chevy problem. I was told to try Techron for a few fill ups. This seemed to help but not solve the problem. What Chevy is saying is that it is a problem with the sending unit in the gas tank. There are a few blogs about the issue and one person did have a mechanic that fixed the problem using a sending unit REPAIR kit. They said they had a hard time finding it b/c shops were saying that one did not exsist. But it does. I am looking into that now. Good luck.

I am having the same problem with my 2006 Trailblazer. Did the Techron Fuel System cleaner help.

I went by the Chevy dealership yesterday. They know about the problem and said they would have to drop the gas tank out to replace the sensor. About $800.00 since my car is out of warranty.

DDOBSON: How long is trhe warranty?
I have an 06 with the same problem. Dont you thinkif enough people arehaving this problem with the sending unit that GM should recall all of them regardless of WARRANTY or not?

I have an 05 TB and I am having the same problem with the fuel gauge. You'd think GM would have done something about this problem by now. Especially with some many people having the same problem. This is why GM is loosing buisness. Poor quality, I'm not going returning to GM for my next automobile.

I have an 06 TB V6 Ext and I am having the same problem. Does anyone know if you have to replace the whole fuel pump and snding unit. Someone told me just to change the fuel filter, that may be all it is so I am going to try that tomorrow.. I will let you all know...

I have an 05 Trailblazer and I'm having the same problem..my fuel gauge has gone out. I was told by the Chevy dealer it would cost me $668 for 6hrs of labor, which does not include the cost of the parts. I agree with Rantao..GM should do a recall.

I have a 06 Trailblazer EXT LS 4WD-same problem. The yellow empty gas tank light stays on and the yellow engine light is displayed even after filling up the tank. Of course it is out of warranty by about 3000 miles. SO... the $800 option is not an option for me. I did talk with a mechanic and he said to try the Techron. For now I will continue to set my trip meter and drive 250-300 miles and then re-fuel. We had same problem years ago with my husband's 97 GMC truck. I agree GM should do a recall.

I just had the same problem. I had the truck towed to a local Chevy Dealership. They put it on the machine which cost $99 and they were able to tell me that it was the fuel pump. The 2005 model has an additional chip sensor that needs to be installed as well. Now if your 2005 Trailblazer is having serious problems with the fuel light or maybe your speedometer is not working, this chip is suppose to fix it. That chip cost $129 and the fuel pump is somewhere between $230 to $250 then don't forget about labor. Total out of pocket was $1,100. The good part about is that since I got it done at the dealership it is covered for the life of the vehicle. The bad part is that I received a called from one of the mom and pop mechanic that said that he would order the part w/sensor and install for $600. I am kind of glad that I did go to the dealership in the long run.

We just bought a certified GMC Envoy XL 2 weeks ago it is a 2005 and has about 24,000 miles on it the dealership gave us the 5 year extented warranty on it, just yesterday after only 2 weeks the fuel gage went crazy and would not go above empty for several miles and it keeps going up and down. Does anyone know if the 5 year extended warranty will cover this?
