Brenda, I just fixed what I thought was a dead battery and a key that was locked into the ignition on my 2003 Chevy Trailblazer Ext. You may need a new battery, but it may be as simple as screwing in the lead cylinders that screw into the side of your battery. You don’t even need to take the battery cover off. My battery has side mounted terminals. The terminals are held in place by lead cylinders that screw into the windshield side of the battery. These terminals can vibrate out a little and cause the battery to disengage the terminals.(I was able to jump start the car before screwing in the terminals so don’t be fooled into thinking you need to replace the battery without trying the following.) I didn’t realize the solution until I started to unscrew the cylinders to take out the battery. Thankfully I screwed them in a little and the headlights popped on. Make sure both cylinders are tightly screwed in and you may safe yourself buying a new battery.
I had the added problem that my car is parked under a storage ledge that prevents me from opening the hood when the battery is dead without pushing the car back. This means I needed to release the gear shift which also unlocks the car key in the ignition. To release the gear shifter you must:
• Remove the rubber bottom of the two front cup holders and unscrew the threaded bolts
• Unscrew the two Phillips head screws on the top side of the opened center consul CD holder
• This allows the center consul (shifter, CD holder & arm rest) to be just lose enough to move it a little, IT DOESN’T COME OUT BUT YOU DON’T NEED TO PULL IT OUT TO RELEASE THE SHIFTER
• Get a drop light or flash light and lay your head down on the passenger side floor well
• Pull out and up the bottom of the center consul on the passenger side just enough so you can peek under it with a little light shining on the enclosed mechanism
• You will see what appears to be an oversized silver Phillips head screw, this is not a screw but a button that you can push in with a screw driver
• As you push in this sliver headed Phillips button with a screw driver, push in the button on the gear shifter and it will pull back into gear
• Make sure you are on a flat surface or just pull up the emergency brake just to be safe
I hope this helps!!

I also have a 2005 Trailblazer. My turns on fine, however, I can not put it in drive and noticed that I can not get the ignition to go back to turn it off either. In addition, the signal lights stopped working along with Hazard Flashes, cigarett ligher and fromt and back lights. Is is this also the same as the above comments? I disconnected my battery thogh. Thanks

there should be a button under the steering wheel and you pry off the tiny cap and push a screwdriver on to the button that will look like a brass cylinder...hold the button in and turn the key and it will come out also it has something to do with the sshift release solenoid located on the shifter if this doesnt work try turning car off slam it into 1st and then back to park
Thank you for your help. My key stuck in the ignition at 11pm on a Saturday night and I came in and read your post. I turned the car off, slammed it into 1st, then back into park...worked like a charm...

Just had the same issue with my 02 ltz. truck has been running fine, no problems what so ever. made a beer run locked my doors, came out unlocked them and went to start it, and nothing happened. no lights no radio, nothing. i had a dim check engine light.

disconnected the battery a few times still nothing. finally someone gave me a jump. car started fine, i got home cut it off and tried to start it up again, and now the key is stuck again.

i did notice that the lights dimmed when i pressed the brake right before i turned into my driveway

This happened to me as well. The ignition switch does have a solenoid that will activate and release the key once you hook up a battery charger to the battery. Thanks to this website, I will save $hundreds of dollars. Great info!!

I was unable to remove my ignition key. Starting checking and found out the cruise control does not work and when pulling out transmission is in 2nd or 3rd gear. Does this sound like shift interlock solenoid?/

My 03 Trailblazer is having problems with the ignition switch and the shifter. Problem is I'll start the truck no problem but when i go to put it in drive the botton on the shifter wont go in to shift it unless i hit the button with my hand then it'll shift but then after i put it in park the ignition wont shut off all the way, it gets jammed up and i have to listen for a click in the column then it'll turn back all the way. Sometimes it wont click and i have to leave the truck running.

I have 2002 trailblazer...just bought it used 5 months ago with 102000miles....about a week and a half ago the dash lights all go out completely dark only able to see prnd123 then about week ago my key would not come out of the ignition...it would turn back to battery only position but not turn all the way back to release...tried a million thing to release it i.e. putting it in park 20x starting and turning off...and adjusting steering wheel no luck...ultimately yanked the thing out somehow....next day go to start it up and everythings great...until I get to store and again key would not come out....took it to shop and ultimately said it was ignition lock and it needed replacing which would include new keys with new lock...however dealer needed to install because of chipped key approx.$200.....note when I bought tb made duplicate keys and was told it was ok for this tb all duplicates worked....but they at least showed me how to manually release key...drove it for a week using manual release until payday to replace it....conveniently last night the tb started with the dashlights going out again...went to store...driving back lights back on but transmission feeling funny in maybe 3rd..on hills and around 40mph...then just slipped in that gear and lost movement with gas...turned entire truck off got a few miles until it happened again...turned truck all the way off again...repeated this process 5-6 times until nothing.....no movement but still acceleration rpm going through roof...no reverse....at one point with during this car was accidently turned off without being in park so it would turn on but quickly noticed...placed in park and would start just no tranny power....please someone tell me if these two problems...ignition lock and transmission are related???!!!! if so will replacing ignition lock be the first step to fixing and will transmission need some sort of resetting?
