I have an 03 tahoe when slowing down or going from reverse to forward the power steering seems to stop in both directions. The only thing I notice is that when the idle is real low, that seems to cause it.
The majority of people have it just to the right. Anyone out there having it both ways?

My 2002 Tahoe had the same issue on right turns only. You would go to turn and it felt like the steering was locked, then it would release and turn. Very odd, shop told me I needed a new Power Steering pump. I found a used one for $75.00 and went to install it. When I was about to unbolt the steering shaft from the pump I noticed a steel guard that protects the hoses with a very shiny edge on it. I studied this and determined that this hose guard was hitting the steering shaft when I turned right. Left turns pushed it out of the way, right turns it would hang up on this hose guard, I never saw it from above, only from below as I was preparing to remove the pump. This bracket or guard is held in place by a bolt, I loosened up this bolt and rotated the guard up and out of the way. Tightened it up and all has been perfect for the past year.

Problem...It is hard to turn to the right when turning from a stop - as though there is no power steering....no problem if I am rolling.
Is there a separate pump for each side? I haven't had a chance to take it to a mechanic yet.
My husband died in July and I had to get a new vehicle, and after being married to a Chevy man for 41 years....I had to get a Chevy. He was our mechanic, so we never had a car/truck in the shop, he fixed everything. My daughter learned so much from him, that she has taken up a lot of the slack.....but this one has her stumped.
Any suggestions??
sonds likt the steerning box however have some one look it the hoses when parked and you turn the steerning wheel some time its better to go to a deeler to fine the problem and you make the repair try to help if we do e mail/ [email protected]

<quoted text> I had the same problem on mt 2004 truck...the dealer said it was normal and the reason was that the steering and brakes operate on a single system which starves the steering when you apply brakes at a low speed. I did not take no for an answer and filed a suit with the BBB, they found in my favor and ordered chevy to buy my truck back for sticker price.
Um, yeah... it doesn't work that way. The BBB is not a court, or even a judicial organization of any kind and has no power to order anyone to do anything. Their only function is to log complaints and hand out sheets of paper that make consumers feel warm and cozy to do business with you. Nice try though.

I have an 02' tahoe with steering shudder problems also, this is my first post so take if I'm not doing this correctly please excuse me...
Our 02' is like "shuddering" only while braking and turning either right or left. I've checked the fluid and looks normal. It has 97,000 miles on it.(5.3L)
Can anyone help me figure this out?
Update/resolution it turned out to be the power steering pump. As best I could tell the oem pump had some sort of speed sensetive flow control valve in the pump was hanging up. The new pumps don't have this vvalve anymore. Anyway, Got one from Autozone and installed myself. It turns alot easier now at all speeds not just when going slow, but the shudder problems are gone. Hope this helps someone else out there!

I have a 2002 tahoe and power steering just went out while driving down the road. Fluid still good and full so what should I replace without being expensive if it's just a valve stuck is that an easy fix???

My 2004 Silverado has the same issues with the right turn only, but I did not see anyone mention the hissing sound or sound of air escaping when trying to turn while stopped. It is not the same sound you get if its low on fluid or at the complete turn stops.

So would the gear box replacement be the same for me? or is it something else?

Thanks

I was told of a steering on Tahoe and Yukon that goes bad and makes steering very irregular at times.

I have an 2003 Tahoe 2wd, and all of a sudden it is very hard to turn right, left is fine, but right is impossible from slow or stopped speed. I have replaced the power steering pump twice and I have the same problem. I have been told to keep trying to bleed it but that done work. I need help with this problem. I have read in above post that replacing the gear box will fix the problem. Please help, this is my wifes car and I am very concerned.

My power steering went out, so I filled up the tank with power steering fluid and it was full. I drove another 15 miles on it and it was really hard to turn. I need help...is it the belt or the pump. 2002 Tahoe LS

I own a 2001 chevy tahoe and I have had the same stearing issue as what seems to be every other owner of a gm truck. I noticed that no one on this bulletin solved the issue, or at least posted about it. If anyone did come up with a resolution please post.

I have a 2002 Tahoe and when I was backing a trailer up my power steering just quit . I had to drive it for 3 days that way which was very difficult. Yesterday I pulled the power steering pump out to find out that the main shaft was broke off inside at a point where the shaft is reduced with a groove. It was a lot of work but I installed a rebuilt pump and to my dismay nothing has changed. The pump sounds good and everything looks like original.I jacked up the front wheels and turned then both directions many times. The steering works fine until I put the wheel back on the ground. Is it something in the bleeding process or is it possible that the rebuilt pump is bad ? Thanks for your input ! Bill

Hi, I have a 2001 Chevy Tahoe and today I had a friend turn the wheel hard right while I turned the outer tie rod and while doing so it made a funny noise, then the truck seemed to dog down, then the steering got stiff and now, it sits, the wheel dont want to turn at all, any ideas on this? I dont want to start spending money on parts I dont need.
