One day I was pulling off from the curb and a beeping noise occured. I looked to see the TRAC OFF and ABS lights were on and the message center says Service Traction System. I went to have it fixed and the mechanic said I had a bad right front wheel sensor. He replaced it for $600 and the 2 weeks later the problem started occuring again...I took it back (this time he said he cleaned the sensor and put it back on). Same problem happened a couple of weeks ago...this time he said I need to go to the dealer to have the computer flashed or reset and he doesnt do that. I notice it happens when I back up and then turn the wheels sharply (sometimes it grinds and the Traction Active displays). I had 20" rims when I got the car and never had a problem...I got the same size new rims and shortly after is when this problem started...any coincidence. At this point I dont know what to do about this mechanic or how to resolve the problem with the car? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated greatly.

I am having the exact problem with my 2001 Monte Carlo and no one knows how to fix it. I have started driving with the trac off light on and this has helped. Let me know if you find an answer. No one here knows either.

My 2001 MC SS is having the exact same issue! I had the drivers side wheel bearing replaced by my own mechanic & this did NOT solve the problem. It has been a couple of months now & everyone I talk to has NO clue what the problem maybe. I don't want to go to the dealer to get charged through the nose! Now the dash displays Service Traction Unit & the ABS & Trac off lights are also displayed most all the time since this problem started. The traction control turns itself off all the time now.

I have a 2002 Monte Carlo SS and I have the same problem too but mine happens when its wet outside either if its raining or snowing. I just replaced the wheel hub so I have to wait and find out if that works. I was thinking about wrapping the connectors with electrical tape to see if that works. Any suggestions let me know

I have the same problem with my 2001 Monte SS. I just had the wheel bearings replaced to solve a different problem and hoped it would fix it. It didn't. I, too, turn off the traction control when I remember to. My car has always been serviced by a dealer and they cannot seem to fix it either.

My 2001SS just started doing that when I turn left but it's been dry for quite a while. This link is for a bulletin that says there are revised speed sensor harnesses to resolve a rubbing problem. On another post, the owner said these were about $45 each & took him about 30 minutes. I plan on checking the harnesses this weekend.

i have a leak and it looks like its coming from the 90 degree hose thats attached to the pulley tensioner and goes to the block under the intake. What is this hose and why would it leak coolant

yes i had the exact same problem with my car it was happening on wet pavement and while turning sharply. the problem is the plastic wire loom that cover the wires that go to the wheel bearing speed sensor has a split in it that allows dirt and water to enter the wire loom and rot the plastic wire cover causing the wire to split. when you turn your steering wheel the wire weakens and it also rubs on the tie rod. the way to fix this problem is a new harness from the main harness to the wheel speed sensor i had it done to my 2002 monte and the problem has never happened since. it cost around 90 dollars a side.

Me too. Loose\Intermittent GROUND. A ground screw(at connection to body metal) probably rusted. Simply replace with a NEW connector(solder) and screw. A little dab of permatex anti-seize works best to prevent this again.

Regarding the TRAC OFF and ABS light on, and the message center says Service Traction System. Having the same issue with my 2002 monte SS. Also, when I am unable to turn the trac off or on. Car has about 84000 miles. The lights don't always come on - just every once in a while when ignition is turned on. Based upon what is being said above I'm convinced that the best thing to do at this point is nothing. Typical "planned obsolesence" with American made vehicles.

As a follow up...the problem seems to have corrected itself without my doing anything. I am no longer getting the TRAC Off ABS light messages. Everything seems fine now. Don't know why. Give it some time and see what happens.

I just started having the same issue with my 2004 SS. Went to AutoZone, they said that the Traction control has its own computer and that the dealer would have to read those codes. Stopped by the dealership, they said that the most likely problem was the speed sensor and that it was built into the hub. Said that the hub cost $400-$500 without the labor. Reading the codes would cost about $85. At this point, I have not done anything. And according to the above, spending that much money might not fix it anyway. Looking to see if any of you have found a definite solution.

I had the same warning light come on, the service traction system light as well as the ABS light and Traction Control light. I ended up getting the right rear hub assembly replaced, which also had the wheel speed sensor built in, and the problem has not come back.

The hub was $395 w/o labor, and normally the shop will waive the cost to read the codes if you get it replaced there. If they dont, ask and they will make a deal with you or something.

Driving in the snow with out the ABS and Traction sucked, and it had to happen when get got 13" of snow.

I have an '01 SS and it started doing the same thing. The traction light comes on when I make hard turns at slow speeds and I hear some grinding noise. I started having all these problems shortly after replacing the tie rods and adding 20" wheels. Plus, I started noticing steering issues. Every time I hit a bump or the brakes, the steering wants to pull to the right and sometimes left. What can this be from? Alignment issues, loose steering, or bearings?

I had the same problem on my 02 ss and the dealer told me it was the abs brake control module...they wanted $1600 to fix the problem but I was not going to pay that..I purchased a used one for about $100 and my buddy and I put it in..problem solved but that was about a year and a half ago and now the same problem is happening again and I only have 53,000 miles on my car and have to do it again and the debate is do I buy used again or pay the big bucks for a brand new one....also you would think with everyone having the same problem with our montees that gm would do something about this but they dont give a s---they already have our money from buying this damn car!!!!!!
