I just had the same problem - two weeks in a row - It's the security system, for some reason or another your security system has reset itself (factory recall matter if you ask me). The first mech. I took it to reset it and told me I needed a new battery - wrong - my batt. was fine. So, when she wouldn't start again a week later I went to my local chevy dealership. It's going to cost me $600 to replace the ignition cylynoide! I'm not happy with this, my malibu has less than 75k and this problem comes out of the blue, I contend that Chevy should cover my expense!!

I currently have the same problem. A wrecker picked up my car yesterday and brought it in to the dealer and they recoded it rreprogrammed. They said it should be ok, the next morning(now)I get in my car to go go to work and it does not start. The dealer should pay for this ignition cylinder or why not just take it out. I really don't care about the theft device.

Hey,

I have a 2004 Malibu Classic and at about 44,000 miles it started giving me the same problem. On occasion I would try starting my car and it would not start. After the problem became persistent and noticing that the theft light was blinking I spoke to a mechanic about the issue. I learned that it was a problem with the theft system censor not reading my key. Well, I decided to do some research of my own so I went online and the only fixes I found after looking through numerous websites and message boards were to: replace cylinder lock aprx $300, install car alarm with remote key entry aprx $299 -$599, or to get all technical and mess with wires under the dash. I then found one blog that mentioned using electrical component cleaner (aprx $9.00) to clean the censor. I thought... WHAT? Would that work? Well, I tried it. I bought the cleaner at radio shack and sprayed it on my key and pushed the key in and out of the ignition. After about 20 times I wiped it on a cloth and sure enough that key hole was dirty as heck. Anyways, I repeated the process spraying a little more on the key each time until I was able to push the key in and have it wipe of clean on the cloth. I then waited a while to allow the ignition to dry before trying to start my car. My car turned on which was a good sign cause at leased I knew I hadn't screwed it up even worse and guess what. ItÂ’s been 5 months and I've no longer had a problem with the theft system. Mind you this was becoming a constant issue. So yeah, before you consider spending hundreds or dollars or risk damaging your car even more by trying to mess with the wiring, you might want to consider this possible solution.

Our 2001 has had the security issue with the key as well as a fuel pump go. If your security light is not on, you may want to look at the fuel pump, but not a cheap fix at all. This is the first vehicle of about 14 that I ever had to replace the fuel pump (at the time 57k miles)

The key in my 2001 Malibu LX slides into the ignition but cannot turn left or right. The sreering turns with great effort and does not lock up. The gear shifter cannot move from Park. So many people have similar problems: why doesn't Chevy maintain its integrity and do a rcall on this item -- insted of socking their customers (how long?) an outrageous $200 -$400 for this part?

My '03 Malibu broke down on me while driving down the highway. It suddenly lost power, stayed on long enough for me to get it onto the shoulder, then completely shut down. Several attempts to restart it resulted in it running for 10 - 30 seconds at half normal idle speed follwed by it shutting off again. Any ideas or suggestions? What should I expect to hear from the dealer once they look at it?
