My2000 impala traction control will automatically turn
itself off under hard left or right hand turn. The
dash light (TRAX OFF and BRAKE LIGHT) remain ON for some time and the traction control switch has no effect on the system.

If you have found the solution to this problem please send me an e-mail at chs_pogo@yahoo.com as I am having a similar problem with a 2002 Impala

Any insight on the cause of this problem? My '04 just started with the same error tonight.

OK, WELL WE HAVE A 2001 IMPALA, AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT STAYS ON THE DASH TOO, IN THE OFF POSITION,, I'VE ALREADY REPLACED THE RIGHT SIDE HUB BEARING @$100.00,, AND THAT SEEMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM, FOR A WHILE, NOW ITS DOING IT AGAIN, I MAY HAVE TO REPLACE THE LEFT SIDE HUB BEARING, FAIRTLY SIMPLE JOB, IF YOU HAVE THE TOOLS AND A WARM GARAGE, TOTAL TIME, ABOUT 2 HOURS. EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE YOUR HUB BEARINGS CHECKED ON THE FRONT !!!!

I have a 2003 Impala and the traction control light comes on when I am just starting out and the brakes vibrate because the traction control is activated. I have had the problem for several years . I have taken it into the dealer garage at least six times. It has never lasted more than a few months sometimes the fix is only for a couple of weeks. The dealer says there is no defect and that I am the only person that he has ever seen with this problem.

Traction Control and ABS problems:
Sometimes the copper inside the insulation of the wires going to the sensors corrodes. Especially on the front units. It reads more ohms than normal but not open and is very intermittent. However moving the wires my make it work for a while. That's why replacing bearings seems to fix the problem but it comes back after a while. May NOT have been the bearing to start with.

My girlfriend's 2001 Impala had a lot of those traction control problems and the local dealer replaced the two front wiring harnesses. I think it cost around $250. It seems to be fine for the last several months.

Apparently it has something to do with the wiring harnesses to the hub bearings. They replaced my girlfriend's on her 2001 Impala several months ago and it seems to have fixed it ($250). If you own one of these cars make sure you get your trans fluid changed too.

We own a 2002 Impala and the traction service light/ABS light comes on from time to time. The car also, when turning, starting from a stop position, may go into traction on- making it hard to make the turn. The car has gone into the chevy service dealer twice for a total cost of repairs of $1600 and no solution yet. This situation just confirms my belief that Chevy cars are inferior to foreign cars. This is our first American made car in over 20 years due to poor quality issues. They obivsouly have done nothing to improve quality in these cars. This will be the last Chevy car we buy ever.

My 2001 Impala LS (105,000 mi)is having the traction light/ABS warning light issue in spades. I replaced both of the wheel hub bearings. The problem came back within 1000 miles of replacment. I hadn't considered the wiring harness to each sensor plug connection - will have to give that a look. Has anyone found a way to read the ABS codes without going to the dealer and paying the high diagnostic fee?(100 bucks at the dealer I went to)

So a dealer said, "there is no defect and that I am the only person that he has ever seen with this problem." That dealer must have his head in the sand because it appears there are a lot of complaints out there. And…here's another complaint. I've had my 2002 Impala in the shop 4 times for this same problem and still no permanent resolution. The last time (today, as a matter of fact), our mechanic threw up his hands and said he was stumped—which doesn't happen to him often (in fact, rarely!). He didn't make the harness repair because he didn't think it could be related. However, I will call him Monday and suggest it. Has any one else besides "Dan" had this repair done and had it last more than a few months? The last time I had mine in (before today) it actually lasted 4 or 5 months before starting up again. My only consolation is that my mechanic has not charged me anything since the first attempt to repair it.

The dealer/mechanic just doesn't know, we all are having this same problem all the way up to the 2005 models. My trac and brake light have been on for awhile now and I just leave-never took it to the shop, personally it doesn't bother me at all cause the car still works. And from everyones posts on this site, I figure I'm not going to waste my money for a temp fix. It doesn't effect the vehicle at all. MY SUGGESTION IS TO UNPLUGG THE FUSE FOR THE TRAC AND BRAKE LIGHT AND ROLL-ON!

I should have elaborated. It's not just a light problem. It's a problem with both the Traction Control and ABS. The brakes grind and the car lurches forward slightly (or maybe the brakes are slipping)when coming to an easy stop on dry pavement and the traction light comes on. When turning left or right (going forward), the traction again comes on and the feel of the steering is "wrong" (hard to describe in writing). This happens most often when first starting out.(Yes, I do let the car run for a minute or 2 before driving to allow the fluids to circulate throughout the engine.)

If ignored, eventually it becomes an issue with the ABS itself--it shuts itself down. It comes back on when I turn off the car & restart it.
